its always the smallest details that make a costume work or to get a character right huh?

my liz costume fought me all last week while I was finishing it (or trying since it had an attitude) I got it mostly done to wear to the con and then....the day I wore it my husband starts lacing me up in it and *snap* my laceing string for the belt broke *LOL* ah well I now have plenty of time to finish this costume lose some weight and make it look decent...

on another note however a bit OT...I participated in the masquerade at Comic-Con (frightening) as Jadis (have to put pictures up) and I won Best Novice! yay! now I'm wondering what the heck to do for next year?? wish i could say i enjoyed the con but i missed 3 days...learning experience anyhow :)

wow, comicon was pretty fun! though i almost have to say that more fun was had outside of the con than in! thursday was looking around 'naked' in street clothes to avoid lots of pics. then friday i went with a friend to the maritime museum, only a few blocks from the con and we took pictures. i wore my chinese lizzie outfit and he was jack. it was pretty funny because there was a docent there that had dressed in a british uniform so of course there had to be a 'skrimish' which was practically demanded by all of the other visitors to the awesome 'pirate' ships there, the star of india (a merchant vessel!) and the hms surprise from the movie master and commander (a ship of the british fleet!). i'll post some pics later, of course. after that we went to the con and we couldn't take more than a few steps without getting mobbed! lol.

saturday i wore my girly cannibal jack outfit. now i have to say, after developing the costume for awhile, nobody really gets my girly jack! no one thinks i'm in costume when i wear it. basically, its a fitted short waistcoast that i wear over a tank top with the typical breeches and all of jack's trinkets and i actually found fake dreds that match my blond and black hair... anyhow, i called the cannibal costume 'cannibal carmen' since i added fruit to jack's hat to play on his eventual escape and 'fruit salad' moment. i had a tube top (which had originally supposed to have been a coconut bikini top, but the tools disappeared) and a mini-scepter and my favorite part were a pair of cat-eye glasses that i had painted eyes on to match the eyes on my face. i also had an awesome toe choker where i had painted the toe nails to make it more girly. some people thought it was funny and lee arenberg (pintel) got it, so it's all good! and i had fun wearing it. : )

i didn't go on sunday, since my friend had to go home and i didn't want to go alone, which sucked since i had one more outfit to wear! i had also made lizzie's bath house outfit, the green robe with the coolie hat and black shoes. oh, well next time! there weren't as many pirates as i thought there would be... i only saw a handful of jacks, two wills, three elizabeths, a davy jones and a barbossa. i hope everyone had fun!

Star of the Sea! I saw you. I got it. I liked the "Carmen Miranda" 'hat' you wore. I was in the Disney booth about the same time you were because I talked to him after you. :crylaugh: :crylaugh:

I don't know why I don't like taking pictures. I had my camera.

KPSparrow189 mentioned something about all of us possibly meeting up in front of PoTC at 9:00? Will that work for everybody? Which leads to the question of who exactly is attending the Aug 18th P&PP?

9:00Pm, forgot to clarify.

The event itself starts at 7:00pm and ends at Midnight. As an extra note, while non costumed attendees can show up early, if you're in costume you'll most likely be asked to wait until 7:00pm exactly to enter the park (that's what happened to me last time, and it wasn't even a complete costume).

Sorry for the lack of posts guys. I've had to slip into lurking mode with practically everything after getting involved with a Universal Studios production. Bleh... work... no sleep... bleh. BLEH BLEH BLEH!
Okay.

I've been getting the responses in my email box, so yeah

9pm is totally great for me. even if I get stuck working I can make that.

Really? That's awesome. Congrats gelflingal!

EDIT:

I've made a couple of adjustments to me costume. I've given my zizzle sword and baldric buckle a paint job, and I've attached said buckle to a baldric which I bought a while back. Not particularly accurate, for it's DMC/AWE buckle on a basic black baldric, but I think it enhances the look quite nicely.

Hopefully at the P&PP I'll be able to get some pics shot in the POTC line, along with me fellow pirates o' course. And I'm crossing my fingers it doesen't rain! Last time I went it was pouring rain... I might aswell of jumped in the lake... it would've been less wet. :P

thanks Wediznutt! and Neon too! I'm hoping to make another version of Jadis' gowns when I'm 30-50 pounds lighter lol...next year next year...

well I've got to learn how to cast metal pieces for my lizzie costume...any tips or direction pointing?

Yes Neon, me and me crew will be there. We're planning on hitting PotC early though, just in case we're asked to leave before then. We've heard how strict DW policy is on character impersonation and as good as we think we'll look, it's possible that we may have to "tone down" our costumes before we're allowed to stay in the park. Hopefully, we'll see you all there. We're thinking that, at the very least, we'll be told not to offer pictures with anyone and not to stay in character, so we'll see.:crylaugh:

At the last Pirate and Princess there were two teenagers in homemade princess costumes. They easily could've fooled people to think they were Disney cast, but they didn't get any flack the whole night.

P&P seems to be a lot looser about this than for the Halloween events (going by the costumes I saw). But It's not as much about showing up as acting like a Disney character, as just showing up in anything authentic looking and drawing attention to yourself.

NEVER EVER EVER let people take pictures of you. EVER!

An when it comes to acting like the characters, not sure. A lot of CMs I know (that know about my impersonation) keep asking me to show up to their attractions where they work and "do my thing." And they definitely know the policies.

So, I may tone it down a bit, but I'm not too worried. The worst thing that could happen is that they tell us to stop... it's not like they'll just chuck us out the front gate. :P

Well, that makes me feel a little better.
We were pretty sure that pictures were out and we don't have a problem with that. We just want to be there, enjoy the evening and be pirates.
Last year at MNSSHP, my daughter watched as a life size Zerg was escorted out the front gate! His costume was unbelievable and too good for DW. He had just attracted too many people and they wouldn't leave him alone. My daughter was one of the last to get a picture of him.

See now I remember when they started this thing waaaaaayyyyy back in 1995...they told those in costume (especially those who dressed as ANY Disney character) to just simply let people know that you were not part of the park or "affilliated" (sp?) with Disney in ANY way....now they go and escort people out of the park because they're talented or get too much attention?

don't know about you but I would raise a stink and go to the media and everything...I understand not taking chances for fear of a lawsuit at their end if the individual did something stupid and guests thought they were employed by Disney....but kicking a guest out for simply having an excellent costume at an event where they can dress up is ridiculous...

ok sorry rant is over.....

At last year's Mickey's Halloween Treat I had numerous people wanting to take pictures with me. I had more pictures taken with people deeper into the park and not near the entrance. Many people and kids came up to me for autographs but I had to tell the rugrats that "Mickey wasn't letting me sign today!"

I also had a Disney Snow White actually shouting out to me "Jack Sparrow oh Captain Sparrow I love you!" We both played the parts perfectly and played off of one another for about five minutes. As she went backstage she once again shouted her love to me....eat your heart out Charming Prince!!!!:crylaugh:

I would think the reason why the Emperor Zurg person was escorted out was because the costume covers their face. The rules specifically state the following from 2006:

"Costume Guidelines

Guests of all ages may wear costumes only to the Mickey's Halloween Treat event in which their ticket is valid. Otherwise, costumes are only permitted at either theme park for Guests ages 9 and under. All costumes must adhere to any guidelines as determined solely by Disney. Please choose costumes that are not obstructive, offensive, or violent. Guests' eyes must be visible at all times."

Directly from Disneyland website FOR 2007:

Costume Information

All event attendees — including adults — may dress in their favorite Halloween costume and must follow these and other guidelines as determined solely by Disney:
- Costumes should be child-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive or violent.
Different......- Guests may wear masks. However, masks must not obstruct vision, and eyes must be visible at all times.
- Guests that dress like Disney Characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
- Costumes should not drag on the ground.
- Costumes should not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
Thank god Cannibal Jack Sparrow only carries a scepter and his compass!- Costumes should not contain any weapons which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
- Guests of all ages may only wear costumes to the Mickey's Halloween Treat event to which they have valid tickets. During normal Park operating hours, costumes are only permitted for Guests ages nine and younger.
- Guests that do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into the event unless their costume can be modified to meet the above standards.

i have to add my two cents on disney here...

i don't know what's going on at the anaheim theme park this year, but last year i went for my birthday (oct. 30) in costume and i'm adult without a problem. there seemed to be no problem with adults dressing up as long as you obeyed the guidelines listed in previous posts. in fact disneyland seemed to encourage it and last year was the first year that they'd had any sort of halloween programming which i would believe would be to compete with knott's and magic mountain. but who knows, since they don't have any programming up for october. and this was just the regular park, nothing special. *edit- didn't realize that p&p is in august. that would be a good reason not to be in costume during the day- duh!*

as for dressing up as a disney character... girly jack was a stretch and i could get away with that in the park, but when i wore my chinese elizabeth and was wandering around comicon with mr. sithcamaro, if we so much as breathed on the disney booth.... the guys with ear pieces would come out with clubs. see it's really hard to tell people that i don't work for disney because people just see two people with amazing costumes, jack and lizzie, let's take a picture! it's also next to impossible to keep people from photographing you without your knowledge in a disney-sensitive place. it's also really difficult not to stand out when you have a great costume, even if you're quiet like me and not much of an actor. and it's even more difficult to look a little kid in the eye and tell them 'i can't take a picture with you because i don't work for disney and i'm not a licensed character.' it really sucks! and you'll get in trouble without even doing anything! and the same thing happened to us at the el capitan theatre. i can understand their reasoning- their characters are trained actors and have to follow certain behaviorial guidelines and they have their own dress code and there's no way that they can control our behavior or how we portray their characters. because at the end of the day, that's what it's all about- control. think of it this way, you'd be in trouble if you went about pretending to be a cop, right? and think of this, too- what if something happened between you and another guest? disney could be in trouble bcause of your actions and unlike their characters who have handlers, you're on your own if things go south. and this is all hypothetical, i'm not saying any of us would do anything stupid, but that's what a large corporation has to take into consideration when running a park that sees a million people in a week.

the irony of it all of course, is after we were kicked out of the el capitan the manager came out and told us what great costumes we had, and could we take a picture by the theater for her? and it was the same at comicon. you guys look great, but we just can't have you here... so i think they do appreciate all of us.
*edit- hey moon prince! glad you got the costume! the irony of that situation was that lee and marty know toby and it was marty who persuaded the higher ups to let us into the disney booth at all... and then we got chased out right after. *sigh*

so i guess the moral of the story is that YES, they can kick you out of the park, and disneyland is expensive, so when i go to disneyland next october, i'm not going to wear any of my potc costumes. okay, it sucks, but go to a pirate event instead and enjoy the fact that you can live in a pg-13/arRr! environment. or another idea, make a variation pirate costume like i made a girly jack, or a cannibal carmen miranda jack, so you can have fun, but not get in trouble. remember kids, you only have to change something by 20% for it not to be considered infringement.... : )

Oh great Star Of The Sea...now I am depressed and thinking of going as a homemade Dalmatian puppy or something else other than Cannibal Jack!

LOL no kidding! But they can't do that at DCA when the event is for Halloween (time) and families can dress up...as long as the guests follow guidelines (like W pointed out earlier masks not covering entire face) they have no excuse to kick a guest out of the park when behaving...

that's also typical Disney at Comic-Con...I haven't truly loved Disney since Eisner took over and practically destroyed everything it stood for over 20 years ago (don't give me the profitable crap either) lol...*sigh*

so my daughter's little Tia Dalma costume is coming along...cute I think...I was going to make my son a tiny Cutler Beckett *sniggle* but I haven't any of the proper material laying around for him *sigh* so I'll just make him either a tiny (young) Will Turner or Jack....Baby Jack and Baby Tia...how cute :)

Our last two outings to the El Capitan went off without a hitch and we had alot of people wanting our pictures. As a matter of fact I think Richard Maldanado and I were far better looking than they El Cap Jack.

I also went for one of the final showings of POTC-AWE at the El Cap and I was the only one in costume and had to keep people away from me. I didn't get any dirty looks from management but alot of complements. As we departed the El Cap Jack saw me and said "Oh look must be one of my distant cousins!" as he disappeared "backstage!" I responded with my own CJS line, accent, and intonations "Sorry mate! But it is still MY peanut!"

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween 1995 was the best because we had this event in Disneyland and there were SO MANY Disney characters running around and management didn't prevent us from having photos taken with or without Disney Park characters. Even West Hollywood was well represented especially the muscle bound Alice....scary! I was Peter Pan and my Wendy was well Wendy and I got the greatest picture taken with a small girl who was Tinkerbell! She yelled Peter! Peter! Peter! to me when she saw me!

I did get kicked out of Mann's Chinese Theater though! That was fun! I can't imagine Toby getting kicked/removed from any Disney area! You think they would hire him to promote the upcoming POTC-AWE DVD release in December! What is Disney Management thinking?

Wait until Bat-Day this September! They don't seem to kick anyone out of the park on that day and I have seen some freaky people running around in all black leather WITH wings! Very strange and double standards!

Hopefully I will get to see Singapore Elizabeth! Since there are no pictures yet of you in costume I will be happily surprised and amazed. I got pics with Star so now I need them with GG! :bigtu:

It's just they're very cautious that the said cosplayer will do something that would be "non-disney" behavior... They don't want people to think you work with them. Here when it comes to the special Halloween and Pirate Parties they're a bit more relaxed than CA, due to the fact a lot less of the visitors are local. Unfortunately (after visiting Disneyland quite frequently when I lived there), a lot of the locals try to get away with stuff... and acting like that as a Disney icon is problematic while ON Disney property.

At any rate, I think we've killed this topic... lets get back to piratey stuff aye?

I'm hoping I get less raisins this time at the Pirate event. It was sorta funny, last time I dumped the contents of the bag on my desk and found like... 2 peices of chocolate... while the rest were these raisin packs they were giving out.

Raisins are nothing without rum! ARRRR

It was there in the photo so I had to make it! Actually it appears to be some sort of animal vertebrae, dried out ears (yummy), a tooth attached to a chain, and some sort of dried out leg! Personally I think the prop dept just looked around and found things lying around and through them together!!!

well peeps, just be careful and be forewarned. actually, disney doesn't like toby and he's never been able to get a gig with them. probably becuase he has real facial hair and *gasp!* a real tattoo!!! i guess it all comes down to having a costume that's just too good. i would just suggest if you go there in potc garb, try not to be too much in character.

And Disney security shows up with all the commotion, throws Captain Jack to the ground after chasing him around California Screamin scaffolding, places handcuffs on him after getting his arms behind his back, and hauls him off to security for interogation! Meanwhile back at the scene of the commotion children are crying because of the fright and because their hero Captain Jack Sparrow was beaten up, thrown down, and hauled away!

I have a question for all you Jack Sparrows using the Master Replica sword.
I hate how it has the disney copyright and the Master Replica info engraved onto the back of the handguard, I feel like it showing takes away from the whole perfect costume aspect, Have any of you removed it, or covered it with anything? I am looking for ideas here.
THANKS!

Wediznutt
08-16-2007, 04:06 PM
I haven't thought of removing it but you could always try a pirates best tool.......DREMEL using a fine grinding stone or polisher! Problem is that you will ruin the color on the sword and may have to touch it up. I don't know if the handle is plated or if the gray color is the same all the way through.

Removing the copyright and MR logo definitely decrease the value of your fine replica.

Well after developing the correct pattern template it took less than 30 minutes to create my new scabbard design. It requires no stitching and looks almost like the movie prop. The leather was still wet as I was trying to work out the indentations in the leather.

Everything is glued using Tandy Leather glue. The stuff dries in about 15 minutes but they reccomend 24 hours before doing anything drastic with the leather.

I used my new plastic CJS sword (it to will undergo a major overhaul and paint job to make it more realistic) because the blade is thicker than the MR version. The scabbard can now be used for both the MR version (where real weapons are OK) and the plastic version (where real weapons are not OK).

Entire scabbard with plastic sword:

Nice! Doesn't feel good when you are done and now get to wear it at all future events? My favorite answer to everyone at Disneyland when they ask me "Where did you buy that hat? I respond...I made it!" "Whoa! That is awesome...can I have it?" NO!!!!!! I respond! PIRATE!

WOW!!! We had a great time Saturday night and no worries....CJS was a hit with park goers and cast members alike!!! My CJS played it up and for the most part played by Disney's rules and no one said anything to us about toning it down. We had lines starting to form many times and we just tried to keep moving and only disappointed a few people.
Just a few pictures before I hit the bunk. I'll post more later.
Oh, and thanks to Neon!! We met up in the gift shop at POtC at 9:00 and for the rest of the night we had double Jacks!! It was great!
Also, BIGGGGG thanks to DisneyDanny, cast member at POtC for taking us behind the scenes and making us feel really special!!

here is the progress of my bodice for my elizabeth swann (gold dress) costume.....this dress has been a nightmare...this is my second attempt (don't ask) and so far it isn't going well...first off i didn't realize that i bought the wrong size ( WAY TOO BIG) and could not return it so i have been trying to tweek the pattern left and right .....i am pressed for time so i figured hurry put and get it done and tweek the rest later (because it know it will bug me) the only thing i have to do is finish the front seams a bit, put some lace on and last but not least put the skirt on ( which shounldn't take long at all) i have all ready completed the underskirt thank goodness.....

My question is.....i so far have a bodice that is a bit too big and can not figure out a way to get the buttons / hooks to stay clamped on the front part of the dress were it comes together by the side of the bodice and stomacher......i have tried everything but since the dress is a bit big they keep coming undone...i really don't want to do it but it seems like a zipper is my only option....any suggestions????

ok quick question which pattern are you using?

do you have anyone to help you fit the bodice to you? it seems to me that you could take in the seams under the arms to fit you better....

Lunacat1

simplicity 4092 ....taking it in at the underarms was the first place i took it in at....it just realley sucks because the smallest size in the pattern was a 14....i am very pettite and about 5" tall so i had to make a million ajustments....i really wish i just went out and bought another pattern i wasn't thinking and not it is a mess

ok kiddo don't panic....so after taking in at the side seams how much bigger is it still? how many inches do you have to take in to fit you?

I have the pattern here in front of me you have a zipper seam (but you didn't put a zipper in) so do you have a seam there at all? and there are two back side seams as well as the regular side seams AND the front panel...you may have to take in the front at each side as well and the panel front too...does that make sense? I know it would work but I'm having a hard time making sure I'm communicating it right....

so you have to figure out "ok my measurement is this and the bodice right now is this so I have to subtract the extra that is in the bodice and then take that and subtract that from the number of places I can take it in"...yup boys and girls math ack...lol...

aaahhhhh! the happy family! wow Steph sure looks like her father can't disown each other if they wanted to :bigtu:
how was the response to your costumes this year?

Yes, Steph sure does look like her dad, she knows it but doesn't want to admit it!! They are like two peas in a pod (peanuts in a shell -savvy?). We have so much fun together as a family and now even more fun with the cosplay!!!! The costumes really went over great, and even though my son didn't dress (he makes a great Will Turner), he had at least 20 people ask him where his costume was. He's 14, kindof shy and really, he just didn't want to. He's too cool, you know  (Whelp!). We were mobbed everywhere we went. I was surprised that alot of cast members wanted pictures with us. Of course, we didn't turn any of those pics down!! We can't wait for October!!!

Your daughters dress is adorable!! Great job. I've spent alot of time with the bigger version of that dress. The minature version is sooooooo cute!!

Hey! Those are some MIGHTY FINE LOOKING baldrics you folks got there! I wish I had some just like it! Where did you get them? Do TELL PUHLEEEEZE!!!?

By the way...who is that strange young lad that popped into your picture? Did you ask him to step out of the way? How dare he just jump in like that!

So why didn't the Whelp want to be Will Turner? After all the hard work Steph and I (kind of) put into his costume to get him GIRLS.....I mean make him a respectfuly young pirate!!! WHELP!

By the way Kendra did you bleach your hair? Very blonde!

By the way I finally found a good pic of me for your folks bar if said Captain Jack still wants one!

WOW......I agree!!!! Aren't they fantastic?!? This really great CJS cosplayer that I know made them!!! Can you believe it?? His work is stunning and absolutely flawless!!! I recommend that you contact him and have him make your's toot sweet!!

That strange longhaired hippy kid is mine, yes, I admit it, I created him.:geek: However, he is not his mothers son. He's from somewhere outside of World's End I'm afraid. Not at all like the rest of us. He's convinced that everyone will laugh at him if he cosplays. Who can talk to a 14 year old? It wasn't a very good start to the evening, to get him all the way to DW only to have him flatly refuse to wear the costume. Oh, boy! My CJS was very UN CJS like!

The blonde hair is a wig. What do you guys think? Too blonde, too long, too straight? It's very comfortable. I was surprised. It was the only part of me that wasn't uncomfortable since it was 95 degrees out when we got there!! We sweated just like scurrvy dogs!!

PLease send the picture. We would be honored to have it at our bar. We'll have a "hoisting the colours" ceremony and everything before we frame it and hang it!! LOL!!!

Please, everyone. Honest comments on the costumes so that we can tweak them if needed before DW in October.

here is the progress of my bodice for my elizabeth swann (gold dress) costume.....this dress has been a nightmare...this is my second attempt (don't ask) and so far it isn't going well...first off i didn't realize that i bought the wrong size ( WAY TOO BIG) and could not return it so i have been trying to tweek the pattern left and right .....i am pressed for time so i figured hurry put and get it done and tweek the rest later (because it know it will bug me) the only thing i have to do is finish the front seams a bit, put some lace on and last but not least put the skirt on ( which shounldn't take long at all) i have all ready completed the underskirt thank goodness.....

My question is.....i so far have a bodice that is a bit too big and can not figure out a way to get the buttons / hooks to stay clamped on the front part of the dress were it comes together by the side of the bodice and stomacher......i have tried everything but since the dress is a bit big they keep coming undone...i really don't want to do it but it seems like a zipper is my only option....any suggestions????

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a134/dreamandbelieve1/Picture039.jpg

OK, just a thought here, and maybe a cop out but.....sometimes a seamtresses best friends are velcro and elastic. I'm not familiar with the pattern and not sure if it will work, but these two items, if put in the proper places will "pull in" or "shore up" fabric and make things fit better. Again, just a thought........

W did a fantastic job on them bladrics! should commission him to make one for itty bitty Will Turner (son)....

ahh the wig...the only thing I would do is find a way to put a wave in it or wrap it like it was in DMC...but that's just me :)

Its not that I hate being told i look like my dad, i mean i am his child, i just dont enjoy being told I look like a <i>man</i> savvy?

Just popping in to say hello, im up to my ears in costume orders. Outfitting the rest of the world to look like Jack Sparrow.... ;)

Thanks for the compliments. Its been months of incredibly long, hard work to get the costumes to where they are.

I was (and still am) incredibly dissapointed in my brother. He knows the amount of work that went into the costumes and if you guys knew the things that were done for him, so he would come to the party... well... suffice it to say he was harassed a lot that night, but I doubt he'll be coming in Oct.

So there might be a tiny will turner costume on the market soon....

We did have a blast though, I was THRILLED that children understood who I was, we walked by so many kids who I heard telling their parents 'thats the lady who turned into crabs' or 'thats the lady who grew big' or even a few people who called me Calypso/Tia. A big compliment, since she is a lesser known character.

The Disney store has ALL the costumes from the movie, and I actually ended up handing a business card to a women who was considering buying one for her husband. The quality is just ridiculous and for the price (like $100) you could be at least a 3rd of a decent, halloween-worthy CJS, thats not made from toilet-paper esque material. It just angers me that Disney seems to deliberatly use the wrong materials on the pirates characters costumes. Not only for the store bought ones, but also for the CJS in the park. Neon and I had a discussion about it.

Anyway... Thanks again guys! I have the cosplay email me the days ramblings from this, so I do keep up!!! Just dont have a whole lot of time to post! Take care!

ugh little brothers *rolls eyes* I've got one of those myself what a pain in the arse they can be...but the love is there...he'll appreciate it later in life...

So there might be a tiny will turner costume on the market soon....

we'll see how it turns out...can't make it too expensive like...a kid will be a kid you know...his costume will be from AWE...got a great deep red/burgandy type material for his shirt!

I've never heard the words "CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW" as much as I did on P&P night I tell you... it was even worse when I met up with stefunierocks and the gang. Then of course we wound up meeting official Jack (aka, 70s Racoon Jack), and then it was becoming something out of a George Lucas film. ("...eh 'ello... -doorslam-")

I knew it was going to be weird just walking to the front gate of the park. First I had to walk by the WDW bus stops which were loaded with regular visitors who were leaving the park before us party people came. So pretty much everybody were pushing and shoving to get a glimpse of me... I sorta felt like the abominable snowman or something... lurking through the bushes.

Speaking of bushes I had alot of weird drunken calls throughout the night too.. without any obvious source... as if the foliage was trying to get my attention. Too much rum perhaps...

Anyway...

Then I actually get inside the park, and being that this is pretty much "trick or treating" pirate style (chocolate coins and beads, which I mostly just gave away to various "fans").. I'm supposed to get a "booty" bag (-snicker-). Well.. I had to convince the guy handing them out that I wasn't a cast member!. Pretty much for the rest of the night nobody knew if I was the real thing or not!

I rode PotC around 4 times that night.. twice being in my own boat. Nobody was paying attention to the scenery of course.. just staring at Captain Jack riding the ride. I played it up of course, telling the prisoners the dog won't move... covering my head with a map when we passed barbossa etc.

It got really bizarre when I randomly decided to wander over to tomorrowland to the Buzz Lightyear ride. Last place you'd expect to see a pirate no?

It just angers me that Disney seems to deliberatly use the wrong materials on the pirates characters costumes. Not only for the store bought ones, but also for the CJS in the park. Neon and I had a discussion about it.

70s Racoon Jack!

At any rate it was quite an interesting night, I had fun with ye fellow cosplay mates. But now what'll we do? No movie, P&P not likely to return...we'll have to come up with something ourselves perhaps... hmm...

YARR AHOY SWASH SWASH BUCKLE BUCKLE!

*cough*

Pirate hats are all well and good mate, but think of it this way. Though Captain Jack prizes his hat (which is quite stylish of course)... he often loses it in battle or it gets eaten by sea monsters etc... yet is still recognizable... Plus, no hat = one less thing to lose! And of course hats are a way to show the status of the pirate in question... bigger the hat.. the more respect (for he gots the most booty to spend on such things!).... in other words... to pirates... size matters!

So, it all boils down to what type of pirate you're aiming to portray. Savvy?

Don't give up! I'm not really familiar with the pattern since I draft everything by myself, but from what people are saying, you can easily alter this pattern especially since it has so many seams. Think about it- from what i can see you have a center back and two side seams and the front seams (and maybe more?). So let's say your top is 3" too big. Now divide that by 6 (2 sides for each seam, I'm not including the front since you might not be able to alter that seam). You get 1/2" so try taking in a half of an inch on each side. Still not right? I learned in my draping class that 75% of fitting problems come from the shoulder seam. Turn your top inside out (easiest way of doing alterations) and have someone with some knowledge of sewing play with the seam. I would imagine since you are petite that you might be having issues with the length of the garment. See if taking in the shoulder seams and raising the entire garment helps the fit. You can also turn the garment inside out and pin it closed and have a friend adjust the other seams. I've found that this works best when you take off the sleeves and when you can keep a seam ripper handy. Keep in mind that you may need to move seams up or down and you may have to true up your pieces later. If you have to change the armhole, then simply compare the distances between notches to the distance between the notches in the sleeve. Honestly, I'd have to say that I don't think putting a zipper or velcro into the top would solve your fitting problems. You're good enough with sewing that I think you can alter the pattern to fit yourself!

In the future when buying commercial patterns that are too big/small for yourself, take the pattern and measure its nape of neck to waist measurements as well as bust, shoulder, waist, etc., the more points of comparison, the merrier and note were you need to make changes. Most patterns will also have lines that tell you where to take in or add length. It's also good to check the amount of ease and the finished garment measurements. I've found that commercial patterns have a lot of ease built into them that can allow you to get away with a smaller pattern, but always measure and if you can, make a muslin mockup. I've been doing this for a long time since my bust measurement is usually 1-2 sizes larger than my corresponding waist measurement. And then I got sick of it all and learned about pattern making.

I LOVE pattern making and draping and I'd love to help you! If you can send me pictures, I can offer suggestions. You can email me at drivergirl(at)rallyestar(dot)com. I think what you have looks great and I think it's important to get the look that you want. : )

Swash Swash Buckle Bucjle to you as well sir.

It's not just a costume it's actually a character, to be inculded in a film I'm working on. The type of person he is feels very much that it's more important to look like you know what you're doing then to actually know what you're doing. Plus a hat would help him stand out from the crew (whom you can see in the photo gallery.) Thoughts on this pirate utfit anyone I'd imagine you folks would be the experts.

Man. It really sounds like you guys had a great time and I really do feel bad about having to bail out on it, but I'm still not sure when the next time I'll get to see Miriam and DJ is again, so I had to ensure that they had a proper send off.

It's okay though. I've had my fair share of being Will Turner this year and have decided to retire the costume as a whole (I've adopted the jacket as my weird artist jacket, and other bits and pieces have gone to a more generic pirate uniform for work) and I'm debating on selling parts of it on ebay, but I'll let you guys know before I do that so you can call dibs on things.

I started construction of the Cannibal headpiece but have slowed down in the creativity department. I am now experimenting with different types of dry / plastic floral arrangement pieces for the left side of the headpiece. I know from the movie that the prop weenies used palm tree parts but I have not been able to find a half way decent piece from any palm tree in the LA area....and believe me I have been looking!!! They are always too dried out and disintegrate!

I am also replacing many of the polymer clay items with hand carved foam pieces. This will make it much lighter on the head considering the thing now ways about three pounds. Working with the foam is so much easier since you can carve the pieces using a pair of sharp scissors. Foam his difficult to paint!!!

Well it is time to head back into the Captain Jack Sparrow workshop and continue with this final and most difficult Cannibal Jack prop!!!!

i know i made my cannibal girly jack headdress more like carmen miranda's fruit basket, but i did use palm tree parts that were in the original. the really spikey part i bought from jonanne's. it was something like fake palm or grass, but you could get the meatier palm fronds from a tree with the rounder fronds and cut and dry them. my grandma had some from palm sunday and were pretty stiff when they dried. i got my palm 'fluff' also from the meaty, round fronded trees. the skinny, willowy fronded trees, can't take the heat. go for the big meaty ones, but those ones can be difficult to reach. anyhow, dig inbetween the 'scales' for the fresh fluff. if it's gray, it's too old and it will fall apart. i got mine from some gardeners who were trimming the neighbor's tree. i didn't treat mine before i put it in my hat and it was fine. but i needed mine for my scepter to beef it up, so i used an older piece and didn't treat it and it fell apart. so i think it would work best to use the new stuff and spray it with varnish or shellac before putting it into your hat.

don't ask me why i have of late become so intimate with palm trees. perhaps that is why they call me 'keef'... lol. : )

my 'cannibal carmen' hat...

Well, its taken me the better part of a month to read this whole thread but I finally finished this morning. Hi, everybody! I'm Steve and I'm a Jack-aholic. Wait, that didn't sound right. Well, I'm working on upgrading my CJS costume from last year and found this place in my travels. Everyone here seems so helpful, and all your costumes are fantastic. I can only hope mine will end up as nice.

So, with that out of the way, I now seek the one called Wediznutt. Ah yes, in the back room with one Mr Gibbs. I'll wait, don't want to alarm the whelp...he seems jumpy as it is:toothy:

Some WIP images!

Wediznutt - If you share some of the pictures of exactly the type of palm tree parts you're looking for, I'll see what I can find here in Fl. I don't know, are palms the same in Cal as they are in Fl? I'm pretty sure we have Fl palms. They're different, I think. Closer to the Caribbean so maybe. Anyway, if I can help, let me know, I'll send them to you. It's so humid here, maybe they would be less brittle.
My CJS is getting ready to start the cannibal headpiece too. I'll post pics when he gets started.

ok this is going to be waaaaayyyyyy off topic but I'm really excited and just wanted to share with you guys...rememeber lil' ol' me participating in the Comic-Con Masquerade?? guess what? it's up at you tube this years Masquerade!! andddddd....here's me!

all right, kids! we're cutting down a plam tree at work! any takers? it's pretty young and has lots of meaty, reddish brown 'fluff...' and it's of the hearty, round-frond variety. i think i'll get some just to hoard, but I don't think that the boys will let me climb up the ladder with the chainsaw again. : )

Well after running the Disneyland 5K the House Of Mouse has provided me with the necessary items to finish my Cannibal Jack Sparrow head gear! Of course people were wondering what I was doing pulling off bits and pieces from the Disneyland Way palm trees.

Also necessary packing material from the World Of Disney store to make my snake skin around the base. I asked the Cast Member to give alot for mailing an item. He gave me 36 feet worth.....room for error!!!!:crylaugh:

Hey, that sword looks good. Currently I just have the zizzle one which is really a kid sized sword (I rarely carry it around). This one looks like it would be a much better substitute (when it comes to plastic swords). All it would need is a paint job to correct the colors.

Alright, this might sound a little so extreme but I think it would be bad ass. I want to make the musical cart that she pushes around in the begining of the movie. Sounds crazy right? It is very possible and it would be awsome to see Tia someplace(like conventions and other events) pushing the cart with the music playing.
This is what I need:
-A GOOD picture of the cart. (I might have to wait until the movie comes out)
-A good audio of the music because I know that there is no place that will sell a music box of it.

It might be impossible but I have it all down in my head. And if I get a good pic, I can draw it out and show you.

I think the dress turned out lovely :toothy: are you going to make panniers to go under the skirt for the silhouette?

ok here's what I did for my jacket...tips....uhhh I stared long and hard at the hi-res photos here:

http://www.costumersguide.com/potc3_chinese.shtml

I then looked at ebay for similar trims (all over the net actually) and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/5Yds-5-8-Gold-Metallic-w-Mauve-Ribbon-3337S210_W0QQitemZ280117399829QQihZ018QQcategoryZ2 8129QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

believe it or not you can take the mauve ribbon out and thats what I used for the larger trim around the coat...I used metallic gimp for the other trim and metallic oh gosh what is it called?flat, ribbon like? argh...it escapes me but you can find it at joann fabric stores...

that's what I did found similar trims (even though we all know its embroidered originally on the movie costume) and sewed them on...now for the designs on the coat if you're any good freestyle drawring (sorry couldn't help myself) do that but make sure it is in proportion to the size of your coat...make sense?

Some good news for us pirates here in Florida, despite the fact the attendance was pretty much equal to a graveyard, Pirates and Princesses will in fact return next year. I'm hearing that it'll possibly be in February like the first time around. No time is set yet, all I know is that it's coming back... so all those who missed it the first couple of times have another chance to catch this event.

Gelflinggal: What fabric is your Pirate King Liz coat made out of? I really like how your coat turned out by painting. I have a bunch of black linen-rayon blend fabric that I'm planning on using for the outfit, though I'm considering picking up some black wool for the coat and lining it with the linen when it goes on sale. I just wonder how the paint would look on that, since I really don't want to embroider the entire coat. x_X

hay friends. Long time no chat ;)

Ive been hard at work! Literally! My ebay business is thriving! Im outfitting men and women around the world to be Jacks and Elizabeths!

I just wanted to throw in this update. I needed a model, so i dressed up my bro. Dont worry, hes comforable enough with his masculinity for it. ha.

But ive been hard at work to get Giselle and Scarlette done before Oct. 12! Heres the progress of Giselle. Its just the basic dress. Im starting work on the details now. And working on the corset for my Scarlett. Enjoy!

I haven't been around here much, but Halloween is looming! I've made a new compass (binnacle, actually) for Jack because the Megabloks container was just too large.

http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000wpt9z/g38

I'm also sewing a new shirt out of 100% linen, using the pattern and instructions in Rural Pennsylvania Clothing. It's going pretty smoothly, but a bit slow because I'm finishing it out right with felled seams. We may do some 18th century reenacting, and I want it to hold up to laundering!

I just wonder how the paint would look on that, since I really don't want to embroider the entire coat. x_X

I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry! I haven't been getting notifications when people post to this thread lately for some reason...gah!

my coat? oh! I made it out of uh...lol...blank hold on....fake dupioni silk I think the polyester stuff...has the slubs...I would have made it out of wool but its not exactly readily available where I live and if you want to make it out of wool it should be a silk/wool blend :)

hey just go to the store where you'll get the fabric ask for a sample get the paint and do a test run...you'll want the metallic gold of the paint I used...neopaque ...gosh darn it...I'm coming up with blanks today! if you do a quick search on this thread it...never mind Lumiere! Lumiere by neopaque...good grief someone get me a new brain!

hay friends.

Enjoy!

Ok I love your brother...great sense of humor kudos to you man!

and congrats on your success on ebay!

Hey yall, haven't poked my head in, in a while. I've been trying to finish Jack (more or less).... and in the process have remaid some stuff as well. Gosh, this must be the 5th time i've said the exact same thing but I really do keep remaking everything (knocks head on tree)...

Anyway, i'll post smaller pics in my gallery for comments, but here are the higher res.

You are now officially a CJS.... our work is never finished without remaking the entire costume atleast 5 times. :P

Where's the eyeliner? Heh, eyeliner or not the costume is looking mighty fine. The only thing that I think would greatly improve it, would be to paint those zizzle buckles to make them more authentic looking (or getting ebay buckles of course), but besides that I think the whole ensemble is quite convincing.

IT'S TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY! YARR!

Here's a little video I threw together last night with me as CJS. It was very spur of the moment. :P

I am looking for an answer here, What color is Jack Sparrow's waistcoat?
I made my first one a blue gray color, it looked ok, I made a Navy blue linen one and it looks better, I now own a linen one in a faded eggplant purple color, it looks good and I was told it was the correct color, just like in the movies, but would like to verify the color. I do like how it looks with the costume, but I never noticed Jack's being abit on the purple side. I am fading it and it is fading nicely. So what is the correct color of Jack's waistcoat?

NeonHurricane
09-19-2007, 08:42 PM
It depends on the movie. In CotBP it was a more faded color which made it look more purple, whereas in DMC/AWE it's much more blue, but still has a sorta purpley look to it.

Now remember guys it couldn't be "Purpley" in color due to sumptuary laws of the day....purple of any shade was reserved for royalty (or the wealthy wealthy wealthy)...just a little note :)

I found this tidbit online about the vest:
"The folks who created the original costume also mentioned the color of this vest in their disney auction. This is a direct quote: "distressed aubergine linen vest"

And could not the famous Captain JacK Sparrow have picked up a purpley colored waistcoat on one of his many adventures! Or maybe he borrowed it from a wealthy women's husband that he had a romantic encounter with! I think he would have worn purple just for the said mention above ' Reserved for royalty, or the wealthy, wealthy! SAVVY?

This has got to be the most difficult and time consuming piece that I have ever made!

I finally completed the three vertebrae and ribs for the right side. I remade the ears out of foam (thanks SithCamaro) and painted them. Finished the long black possibly snake vertebrae necklace and painted it! That took forever. Touched up the skull. Now I am in the process of shaping the recenlty commendeered (nautical term) palm tree material and sealing it so it won't dry and go brittle.

Still trying to figure out what is over the left ear area. No pics or guidelines to follow so I may have to "wing" it?!

This thing is going to weigh a ton!

Lastly finishing up the old English text for "paprika" and making the EITC logo on the bottem with EITC text. This is a challenge!

Assembly and pics soon!!:snoring:

Oh yeah! Attempting to sprout a real beard for Halloween to see how well it will work! Only time will tell!

closest (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/babytiadalma/btdnecklace0003.JPG)

I know they have one available at a couple stores in the mall but it was cheaper for me to do this and if it breaks I'm not gonna cry a 2 year old will be wearing this for pete's sake...

as for her hair I'll just make it curly as possible (naturally) no wig she'll yank it off...and darken her up a bit and put the marks on her face...going to paint on the mustache and goatee for lil whelp *chuckle*

If you ever have a real issue trying to determine details about a Jack Sparrow cosplay I recommend talking to Toby Markham. If you've ever been on youtube, he does off the funny Jack Sparrow videos, even met Johnny Depp.

He's perfected the costume to an almost exact replica and he's a great guy. I know if you had questions he could and would answer them. ^^

You can contact him a couple ways: http://www.sithcamaro.com or http://youtube.com/tobymarkham/

ok his costume is pretty much what he wore throughout the movie the only difference is that his shirt is open because they ripped it (I think) as to cut out his heart..he has a scar on his chest...and he's wearing a bandanna that is the same color as his shirt (again I think the color is)...that's it:bigtu:

Hi All,

Love the forum, have been lurking for months!

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting the MR Sword that I am making a baldric for (thanks Wednizutt!) but am concerned about where I can go with it?

Maybe I should get a plastic one instead (in addition?). The only one I can find that looks even close is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BU8YFC/ref=olp_product_details/002-5757771-3916819?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

But I'm afraid it is going to be too small and toy-like!

Please share your experiences with bring the MR sword around at the cons, parks, etc!

Thanks,

Lisa, don't waste your money on that sword. Get this one instead:
http://www.halloweenexpress.com/disney-pirates-the-caribbean-sword-and-scabbard-p-10678.html

It is 30 inches long with a 24 inch long blade, it is a little short to be an accurate cutlass (about 4inches) but, its all plastic so it should be park safe. Just give it a quick coat of paint for a more accurate look.

I agree..... go with the other sword (it also comes with a very decent sheath. And yes it can look quite nice when painted.

However... you could also get that other sword kit solely for the plastic buckle.

and sorry guys if by any chance i posted in the wrong forum! :lost: thx!

P.S. - 57townsman YES I've needed my posts to be 'approved' as well...i think it either has to do with your status on here (example - less than, say, 7 posts, need approving) or if posting a link.....?

57Townsman and Tsuyosa,
Thanks for the link to that other plastic sword and advice about painting. I placed the order this morning!

Tsuyosa, those pics look great! Any special type of paint I should use? Forgive me but I am new to this. I've also got the flintlock that needs to be painted...

I would be curious as to 'improving the blade ala painting' of the plastic sword as well...

I bought it and I've redone my scabbard but I would like to re do the blade.

well I decided to take the kids in and have pictures done of them in their halloween costumes. My son decided not to wear boot tops so he went barefoot and neither one are wearing makeup, just their costume....

Here's me tired and trying to act like jack in my first video production! yaay....uhhhhgghhh it's sooo bad. I had nooo idea what i was doing! X(

If you go to home depot.. or lowes (or someting like..) just look for paint that is MADE for plastic.

I'd recommend a brown, Holding the can at a distance (so you're not spraying a solid color... but a misting) spray it spottingly and just generally try and make it look dirty, or 'rusted'. Have a cloth ready as well to wipe up any "mis-fires".
Something else you can do is google "weathering techniques for props" and see what you can find :)

Tsuyosa,

Thanks so much for the tips. I'll do that. Why o' why did work have to get busy NOW?!

Got the sword today and and am jazzed. Not bad for a plastic toy at all.

Loved the video too. Good luck finishing up. Made my boots last year from Sithcamero's tutorial. Expensive for the suede but worth it. Best of all, they have the right heel AND stay up on their own. :)

"little brother" (and LOL at the mulan reference) is just decidedly "too cool" to dress up with his family and go to the parks. So his Will Turner costume sits in the closet, never worn... I think im gonna give it to a friend of mine who will use it. Sad I know. :(

Some assembly required! Still trying to figure out how to put everything together...making the parts is the easiest...assembly is the difficult part!!!

I remade the ears on the dangle using foam instead of polymer clay. Trying to keep this bad boy light!

Most parts are made from foam and painted.

Ended up using 5/8 inch foam insulation for hot/cold pipes. When I was at Aussie swim class with RUM on Saturday I saw a bunch of kids swimming with foam spaghetti toys and thought that just might work...!

I ended up using the non-skid shelf lining and tearing it apart! Next I re-hot-glue-gunned the material to the foam and wrapped it up tight. Unfortunately I ran out of tubing so it is back to Home Depot plumbing section for all your costuming needs!:crylaugh:

This is a painfull process! Tennis elbow in right side is killing me....going to physical pirate therapy for the bloody pain!:lost:

1. Recovering from tennis elbow so I can finish a pirate Lizzie Swann baldric and two scabbards although I just may make two scabbards by gluing them together! Overdue to that pirate family but I keep me promises!

2. Finishing up Cannibal Jack Sparrow head piece.

3. Refining paprika.

4. Gathering supplies for creation of the At World's End navigational chart.

5. Gathering supplies for Captain Sao Feng 2008.

6. Raising one kid!

7. Working 45-50 hours a week to pay off costume debt!

All in all rather busy!

ok his costume is pretty much what he wore throughout the movie the only difference is that his shirt is open because they ripped it (I think) as to cut out his heart..he has a scar on his chest...and he's wearing a bandanna that is the same color as his shirt (again I think the color is)...that's it:bigtu:

okies, that's what I figured, but I'm still having troubles finding good shots of him.

I would think he'd be in the costumer's guide, but how do you search it?

I've been finishing up some loose ends, improving the Sparrow costume. I made a new shrunken head. It's not perfect, but an improvement over the previous. The hair is closer and I added the "chonta" wood, but I need to have a more matte finish. Below is mine next to a screen cap (right):

http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000yfa9t/g38

I'm also making a new shirt out of linen. Almost done, except for one cuff!

We also picked up one of the plastic CJS pistols, which I aged, because this isn't going to be finished in time. ;)

Well, recently Jack Sparrow "interviewed" another 'Jack Sparrow' whilst being in Davy Jones' Locker...

In the interview Jack was asked "These are the times that you ask yourself what kind of man you are? So, what kind of man are you Jack..?"

Here was his suprised response...

not much Lord Beckett advice has been posted yet love...its one of those characters I'm dying to see more of...so maybe I can help out a bit:

He has more of a "straight laced" approach to his clothing...the jacket is not "flarey" except for in the panels...egads I have a hard time explaining this...lets use pics:

Nightengale37 - There are lots of period patterns out there. If you're looking for instructions, Simplicity is probably the way to go:
http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4923

If you want a more period pattern, try J.P.Ryan. I've never used hers, but I've heard good things. Great Pattern Review:

hi everyone!! ok it's not complete it still has to be sealed, painted, heck glued together, blah blah blah but here it is so far:

belt medallion (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/2007_1021bike0002.JPG)

its a little big for the belt even after squishing it to make it fit....but we all know the first try is not the greatest...ok wait this is my 2nd one...my first was an absolute failure...

I should have this belt completed over the next 3 days just in time for friday's event :bouncer: :bouncer: :bouncer: :bouncer: :bouncer:

You're going to draw a lot of attention with that costumemr...oh hey...how much does your headpiece weigh? and what are you using to keep it balanced??

CloakedSchemer; your painting looks really good on the back of that jacket...see how wonderful Lumiere is?? thank goodness for a certain cosplayer that keeps making great suggestions (hmmmhmmm *points at Wediznutt* hmm hmmm)

my turn!

ok so you saw the bloody medallion kinda as is...well here it is glued together and the "gaps" filled in with additional paperclay to smooth it out and look as if its one piece:

not glued together (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/2007_1021bike0002.JPG)

glued and smoothed out (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/2007_1023bike0005.JPG)

baking it for a few minutes and then I'm going to paint....then seal...then put on darned belt ...:bigtu:

Mad at myself! My camera fell off the back of my car and now I have no digital camera. All my costume progress pics were on that thing!:lost:

By the way GG love that one picture!!!! Medallion pie! Might I have a slice?

Great progress to all the Singapore Lizzies costumes! A long journey to complete but well worth it when you don said frock!!!

Headpiece is about 6.5 lbs but is made up mostly of foam and some polymer clay pieces. Ribs and doohicky on the left side are PaperClay! I may switch the polymer items for PaperClay on Sunday before Halloween...maybe!

Sorry couldn't resist!

Singapore Lizzie says, "The enemy will see the flash of our cannons, and they will hear the ringing of our swords, and they will know what we can do! By the sweat of our brow and the strength of our backs and the courage in our hearts! Gentlemen, Hoist the Colors!"

Captain Jack yells back, "Down in front!":crylaugh: :crylaugh:

wow...awesome costumes all! I myself have not been so elaborate in my pirate costume endeavors, but I went to a costume party as Ragetti once. He is my all time fav and I happen to look like him a bit. (except I'm not missing an eye) My costume was not hand made, but I simply bought things I found at the thrift store that came as close as possible, but I'm thinking of remaking the costume. I probably won't be able to do it until next year because I'm busy with my Akatsuki and Tenten costumes!:toothy:

oh no W!!! ok well no worries...I asked the husband...ok TOLD the husband he is official picture taker tomorrow...good thing I bought that 1 gig memory card now huh? :)

cloakedschemer: go girl go girl go girl...its your birthday...ok yeah my age is showing

W: lol when talking about "you down front" you have the higher hat bud!

a Ragetti costume? *ears perk up* where? *looks around* I want to see too!

LOL Pintel and Ragetti in drag has been discussed before only briefly...that would be seriously funny! and with the gnarly makeup too even better!

oh yeah! lol speaking of a "slice of medallion" I got me belt done (mostly)

here it is:

base layer of paint (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/PKLbelt0001.JPG)

finished paint (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/PKLbelt0002.JPG)
finished paint (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/PKLbelt0005.JPG)

belt laid out (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/PKLbelt0006.JPG)

medallion attached (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/PKLbelt0007.JPG)

for all you other PKES (Pirate King Elizabeth Swann) ladies out there...the belt is rounded on the bottom...you'll see pics on Saturday what I mean...not straight across...it'll gap horribly...

so the white flecks on the medallion are where I drilled and sewed the thing on like a giant button then filled in with paperclay...so a little more painting and voila!

I'm going to attach the panels tomorrow...oh my god I'm jumping out of my skin I'm so excited!! lol

grassshopper...the miracle of acrylic paint...choose whatever metal base you like, I used bronze (should've stuck with gold looked like the lighter bronze), give two good coats...then take a black acrylic paint (I used "wrought iron": a flat greenish black) do a "wash" (1 part paint to 1 part water), then paint on top sparingly with the black acrylic paint....you want it to look like, well just like you said-layers, of rust, grime, whatever the heck it is :). Then once you are done with all of your painting and get it to where you like it, seal it...I used DecoArt Mutli-Purpose Sealer.

oh! I tend to use FolkArt brand of Acrylic paint a lot (good stuff)

(think Sebastian from Little Mermaid) Tank you tank you!

Lol, well so far today (HALLOWEEN!!), I went to school in my jack sparrow for two classes. Man, There were two categories of people.... those who saw me once (then never looked back)... and then those who saw me immediately wanting pictures. It's funny how people either love it or hate it... haha. And Halloween is supposed to be a FUN day!

Anyway, i've got alot more things planned for the day, I'm getting photos taken in-costume... giving the announcements at a halloween 'function'... and then hitting up the downtown scene to try and win some money!
WOOO..... more details to come tomorrow :)

Happy Halloween everyone!

I was pleasantly surprised today when one of our clients called to inform me that a Jack Sparrow costume he had commissioned from us won him 1st runner up in a costume contest over the weekend - his prize totaled $2,500.00 - seriously. The contest was sponsored by All the Hits Q100, a radio station here in Atlanta. Will post pictures as soon as I get some!

Just won first place today at work. Again like mentioned before either people really know the character OR they don't know anything about the character except some basics. I had all people at work asking "What is with the feather duster?" and "What is with the strange hat?" and "Why are you wearing toes around your neck?" WATCH the freakin' movie is my response!!!

Now onto downtown LA to win prizes...oh wait! It is a costume contest for kids only! DRATS! No paying off this Jack Sparrow debt!!!!
