Tsuyosa - Love the pics, you look perfect!

DH won first prize at a contest Saturday and got a $10 gift card to a movie rental place. Yay! That's almost as good as $2500, right? ;)

I've shown the costume before, I know, but here you can see the new linen shirt: http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000zrktk

well lookie what happens when I go and take the kidlets out!! congrats to all of you who entered and won costume contests!! once again the universe decided it wouldn't oblige me with pics of the kids and I together (what is it with the hubby> one single picture please??)...that's ok because I took these they aren't too great but gives someone an idea of the costume...my belt is actually too large! yes my waistline is tinier than you see (or don't see) and so I have to cut down the belt...which means I have to cut down the panels...which means I might as well remake them out of the real stuff this time (leather)....my vambraces/gauntlets gave me some issues with some details but I already know how to fix 'em (yay!) and I HAVE to redo the darn coif (shoulder armor) its just not long enough in the front...no that it isn't it...the problem is I have a bust (not large but there) which means to give the illusion of the original costume I either have to bind myself or remake....ummm...still thinking on it actually...the shoes...argh! those shoes!! I'm totally redoing in real leather now all I have to do is buy a leather sewing machine (ha ha!)...

so here are the pics of me in the costume (all 2 of 'em):

front ahhhh! (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/2007_1030bike0003.JPG)

back and not much better! lol (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/2007_1030bike0002.JPG)

and of course pics of the kidlets in all their glory:

Halloween '07 (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/halloween07/)

I'm going to be able to get a bit more use out of my son's costume for him so I'm going to make him some "real" pirate boots utilising those wonderful tutorials...my daughter has grown like a weed! look at the hemline here:

earlier this year (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/babytiadalma/2007_0822bike0004.JPG)

versus tonite:

whoa (http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/halloween07/2007_1030bike0010.JPG)

so I don't know what I'm gonna do for her next...and she loves this costume too! lol

Maaaaaan, if I was an awesome older guy I'd cosplay Barbossa in a heartbeat... but he'd be really hard to pull off for a young female. :P

I have been considering making a World's End ~spoiler~version Will. I'm not a huge Will Turner fan (or one at all really), but he did look freaking awesome. And there's more than enough brilliant Jack cosplayers going around already. :)

Omg.

Idk if anyone here knows what Oh No They Didn’t is. But it’s a livejournal community with like a million members, that does celebrity gossip.

Recently they had a costume contest submission. And I submitted on a whim!

Well, out of thousands of entries, I made top ten.

If you have a livejournal, and are apart of Oh no they didn’t (or want to join), go on and check it out!

I don’t care if I win, I think Im the best there, as Im the only one who didn’t grab stuff out of their closet to make their costume!!

I feel like a tiny internet celebrity today. Seeing as how many people read that thing.

Gelfling Gal - You're costuming looks amazing, as always. :) Your attention to detail is just insane! Good luck with the rest of the costume!

I'm on the hunt for an Elizabeth Swann wig from the first movie. My hair is very dark brown (more towards Keira's natural colouring), short, and straight. I'm also looking to get into some stand-in positions within a couple film companies I work with. I've been told numerous times that I have a face reminiscent of Keira (don't look exactly like her though) and our body measurements are almost exactly the same - hence the stand-in. Since everyone knows her the most through POTC, I wanted to do a photo shoot with the wig to portray the more blonde side of her in hopes of those stand-in jobs.

Thanks guys!

Are you looking for a Human Hair wig or a synthetic?? It's going to take a bit of styling to make any wig look like her hair from the first movie...and which part? the beginning? at the Fort? on the Black Pearl? more info, maybe then we can "steer" ye in the right direction...:bigtu:

Ahoy, just popping in here to ask if any of ye have bought fabric online for your CJS costumes. I ask because I'm getting ready to remake the shirt and waistcoat/vest (and making a pair of breeches finally) for my CJS costume, and I really want things to look as authentic as possible this time around. I've been doing a lot of hunting, have some results so far, but if any of ye know of a good online fabric store for particular Jack-Like fabrics just let me know. :)

Also, does anyone here have a baldric from sith-world? They look pretty nice, more importantly in my price range (hehe), but it never hurts to hear others opinions aye?

All ye costumes are looking AWEsome as usual, keep up the good work!

well depending on what your coat is made of, i'd say run it through the wash a few times (make sure it's machine washable and won't shrink) and you can also scrunch up the coat into a lump or ball (as tight as you can get it) and sit on it or put a heavy weight on it for a few days. then your coat will look nice and wrinkled so to give off that "worn" look to it.
(oh and one more thing if you want to get a faded color for your coat (as many worn coats do) leave it out in the sun for a few days as well.)

Sash - Fray the edges and the ends with a knife. Cut some slits into the edges randomly and at different angles. Next wash the sash for 2-3 times to let the edges fray but not fray too much. Finally prepare a nice tea bath for the sash and soak it for about 10 minutes. The longer you soak the darker it will get. I would start with a 10 minute soak though. Use about 4-5 tea bags. After soaking allow it to air dry without rinsing. This maintains the stain in the material.

You can do the same tea bath on your shirt as well.

Vest - Use a very fine grain sandpaper and sand down the areas that would normally get worn down over time. Areas around the pockets, shoulders, etc. You can also use a very dilute bleach solution and sponge down some of those areas as well to achieve a faded look. Here are some before and after weather of my waist coat!

Hope that helps.

You could also put it into a large bag, like a pillow case and toss in a few large rocks, that are kind of ruff, not too ruff though and not too dirty and toss it around the yard for a while, It's kind of like what they do to weather stuff for the movies, by putting them in a cement mixer with a few bricks.

Gefling - Since it's a temporary and not permanent, I would opt for the synthetic hair. There are some brands now that the synthetics looks almost as good as the real things (they just don't stand up to the elements)

As far as the hairstyle goes, I'd say the one where Elizabeth is on the ship. The first and second movie hairstyles can be styled from that wig if necessary. (I would think...I could be wrong on that, though)

Well as this thread slowly fades away into the archives of Cosplay I thought i would resurrect it in hopes to keep it alive until sometime around May 2011 with the fourth installment of the pirate movies.

I have been taking a break from pirating but have started working on crafting the leather armor of Captain Sao Feng. I am using PaperClay to form the first few layers of various large scale metal adornments on his leather neck piece. I considered using tin but couldn't get the color right. I may use it for the larger pieces but I am still experimenting. I have also found the best leather 4 ounces and working on a paper template for the belt and hanging pieces. I also found some real torquoise stones that I bought in Alaska and considering on shaping for the belt.

Well that is it for now. At this rate of speed I may be finishing it up by Halloween hopefully sooner. I now need to correspond more with a certain someone who will be assisting me with the jade colored silk robe! I will make the characters though and hand stitch. Hello corresponding costume maker? Are you out there?

Well hope to see everyone with more updates and the rest of you in the beginning of 2011!

and if that wasn't enough my box of beads fell and I'm finding the tiny little ones everywhere, and beads in the strangest of places. I think I have found most of them... but who knows.

If you use the thread search feature some ideas will pop up. The question has been asked before a couple of times and I think that's why no one answered :(

I would google "goatee making" and I'm pretty sure something will pop up....from what I can remember wig lace is used and hair lol human or synthetic is up to you :)

I guess it is just you, me, and Moon Prince! Trying to keep this thread alive until 2011 may be difficult but I will try!

Discussion: What am I working on now?

- Leather tricorn 2.0
- Curse of the Black Pearl baldric. Using very thin black leather and planning on painting pewter buckle!
- Pirate Elizabeth Swann baldric for StephunieRocks mom
- New pirate Elizabeth Swann baldric for me wifey using real ostrich leather which is what is used in the movie version.
- At World's End navigational charts
- Pirates Ye Be Warned and Stow Ye Weapons wooden signs
- And believe it or not I am starting to collect photos in order to really think about making the Pelegostos Throne Chair!!! Yes you heard me!!! The full blown throne chair!!! Where I will put it I have no idea!!!

I just received my Captain Sao Feng dao sword and my Captain Hector Barbossa sword from Master Replica....only $79.00 SALE price from original $299.00! Couldn't resist!

I'm all for keeping this thread alive. I lurk here alot. :D

I'm kinda in the works of a "Empress" elizabeth costume. Not with the hat and outer vest but what she wears when they're escaping the Dutchman. http://www.antoinettescloset.com/pirates3lizprincess.htm But I'm still in the planning stages. A lot of my time will be spent looking for close fabric choices.

It's always a fabulous idea to collect as many pictures as you can in regards to the costumes. Or at least the ones you desire to make for reference. I'm such a darn purist (read here: Obsessive Accuracy Disorder) that I'll spend the money on the real thing or something similar...The hardest part Kaits (and I'm sure you know this) is the research and finding of materials...making it isn't so tough :D

Whoa W....the throne chair??? awesome...plan on having some kind of Pirate walk through for Halloween(s) to come?
I keep wanting to just get started on all the leather bits and pieces (again) for PKES but *sigh* other things must be done first...I truly believe the hardest part of that costume are the darn boots....I'm willing to have them professionally made but where does one go for that?

Moon Prince
02-02-2008, 03:26 AM
while my boots are not perfect... for me? they came out okay. I'm much happier with this version than I was with the first... but the boots are too big so I have to come up with something for my feet in them.

I'm not going to obsess about my costume being 'perfect' because I don't have the money to do so! but I'm just going to have fun!

next up... cleaning my desk off so I can put my sewing machine on it....

I'll post pics as soon as I can find my camera.

edit: no camera yet.. *scratches head... * memory card is in printer so camera can not be far away.. room still clean.

I have some fabrics to start the Empress Lizzie... I need to buy all new fabrics (the really accurate, expensive ones) to make another Chinese battle Liz because I sold mine. : ( There was a lot of work during Halloween and I made myself a 'posh' pirate outfit that looks like the Sir Francis Verney painting in the POTC ride at Disneyland. I made myself a nice Chinese Liz hat but that broke my hardcore leather machine, so I can't start on new scale armor or practice making myself a Spartan bikini. Lol. Right now all I'm doing are commissions and eBay auctions which have all been for Sweeney Todd stuff. I think there should be a ST and POTC crossover. Like in the beginning- hello, Sweeney, you're so on the Black Pearl! And Anthony is so like Will in COTBP. Lol. I don't know. I want to make more POTC stuff, but after selling a lot of stuff on eBay and working for Pirates For Hire, I need a little break from pirates for now.

But I will keep the flame going! The other thing that has kept me away is my Drift Pirate! activities. I'm like a professional driver now! So weird to say that... I don't have a lot of free time so much anymore... : ( The one good crossover that happened was when I went to SEMA with one of my race cars, which is the largest aftermarket car show in the world and I found this really cool Chinese dress and I thought that it would look good with my girly Jack hair, so I wore it all. Lots of people took pics of me and one ended up in March's edition of Motor Trend! Look on page 67. It's a SEMA "Celebrity Report." Wow. I'm a celebrity? In my rockin' modern pirate outfit!

If anyone wants to come, I'll be at the Long Beach Grand Prix, April 18-20 driving a 600 HP electric Mustang and doing drifting exhibitions. Pirates For Hire is also scheduled and if it's possible, we're going to pit together and I might do some fight coreography with them. In my driving suit. : )

I might be going to some kind of faire in Ojai? In May I think... Pirates are a feature...

Comic Con.

I want to go to DisneyWorld one day....

I need to save up... but my dream of getting a sentai/power ranger suit costume is closer to becoming a reality with a helmet coming... so I have to save for the spandex...

I still have to take a pic of my completed boots...

My bandanas were buried in my mess so I washed them... I had a few pairs of white socks in the load... now they are pink.

What I'm doing for a wig project is using the godiva xl wig here from cosplay.com. I won't need that much hair but like you, I'll need extra wefts for this updo and what better way to ensure the same hair color than buying a wig I can hack the extra length from and use as wefts?

oh no! for real? I just bought one for my project...what's the problem with them?

Volume in hair...here it is...ready? Teasing. I kid you not. Adding wefts and teasing where it is needed is how to do it. Look at my Sarah wig from my Labyrinth cosplay...teasing....look at my Jadis wig for ...never mind I cheated I used an apparatus to full it out so as not to have 10 million pounds of hair on my head (still hurt though).

Thank you gefling!! <3 Anyway I just realized I never answered the question for Godiva wigs -- I just read a note on Katie Bair's site saying that sometimes the quality of Godiva can be bad and that people would only be paying money for it because it's long...but if it works well for you I might buy one, considering I wanna buy some off this site.

I know it was posted...

what was the name of that curtain pattern you could buy at Ikea that was 'close enough' and often mistaken for being identical to the material of Jack's sash?

eta: wah! At Jo~Ann as part of the new spring fabrics we got in this new linen print. It comes in green, purple and red. It's close enough (one thick stripe surrounded by two skinny ones) to Jack's sash... the problem is it only comes in Natural... and not white. even ivory would be ok WAH...

I'm trying to research and create the pink corset that Elizabeth wears in COBP. I have found this photo (among others) and I'm having a devil of a time trying to figure out what that trim is.

http://www.willofasparrow.com/images/es_ctm/ebay_es/374d.jpg

Has anyone ever actually seen the corset in person or know who purchased it in the Disney ebay auction? I have been scouring every trim site on the Internet and I can't find anything that looks remotely like that trim. It seems to be some kind of flat, maybe cotton with picots or loops of some sort, but I can't be sure. I'm not even sure what to look under....gimp? binding? braid?

I'll probably have to settle for something the same color that isn't quite right, but I would like to get a close as I can. Thanks!

So as I've resurrected myself in costuming and currently working on Giselle from Enchanted...I got a little distracted in finding my old PGSM wig and (re)dissected it to make it useful again. Upon doing so, I realized that since I dyed my hair brown, it would be a WONDERFUL Giselle wig! However, not the Giselle I'm working on...the one I've already done from PotC !!!

Since I went brunette ( with a bit of red ) I had my heart set on making and wearing Scarlett ( which I still might ... ack....addiction... ) but at least I'll have a purty blonde wig for when I bust out my Giselle dress again. :) I HATE wigs...but someone suggested it on here at some point and when I found this one under my bed in a box, I couldnt help but make it useful...

It's not done yet, but here's a look at it thus far. It's not as bleached as hers but it's better than brown.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/hairhair2.jpg

And what i've learned so far is that applying direct heat to kanekalon is a BAD IDEA. it pretty much fries it and makes it fubar. UNLESS you give it a crazy spray layer of hairspray first. I've been doing that to each strand ive curled and its working fantastically with a regular metal curling iron! humba!!! *points for whoever knows what that means*

PS. im pulling out my strumpetyness again for a Pirate themed night on boat party at the Hamilton Harbor. any niagara regioners or Torontonians should join!

I did my wig last night and YAAAY through a tutorial I found on Youtube, I actually did manage to put a crapload of volume and teasing into my wig <3 Although it's not as clean as I would have hoped. The bangs are cut, however, because this WAS going to be my Misa wig...till I decided I really wanted to try and see how I could put up Giselle's hair onto this thing. Luckily for me, I learned how to tease the hair enough to not show the netting underneath. The curling isn't completely finished, just most of the front. I need to do a lot in the back, and I need to buy more curlers.

Here's my stuff so far:

Well I sat down and watched the third installment of POTC today, finally, and have decided to possibly redo the coif (shoulder piece) and hat, or redo the brim for all intensive purposes, for my PKES costume for Halloween this year.

My poor huge medallion for the belt centerpiece broke while wearing the belt last year and I thought I would remake another. however, laziness has set in so I decided to patch it instead.

I'm thinking I'd like to make the coif in leather (as it should be) yet I'm not sure which/what kind to use...can you get over that? my poor little brain has shut down...oiled? maybe, slightly shiny? yes. Weight? no clue :toothy:

help?

Hey this is a question for those of you who have made Scarlett or Giselle's costumes:

found any really good pics lately? for reference of the costumes? I found some but can't get any really clear shots of the front of the costumes except for in my one book and there isn't a feature where I can hit a magnifying button ;)

Just want to start gathering photos now for a later costume.

thanks in advance :)

i've got toooooons!!

after seeing a girl who did giselles dress on kttc, i've decided to revamp mine...thus began the hunt again.

hers is actually one of the best references i've seen though ( though with my nitpicky ways there are a few aspects that i do dislike...unfair and stupid of me, i know but it's how i deal with my jealousy XD ).

here are what may be the only ones you will need...
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/StrumpetsRule.jpg ... basic front shot. you can see the two lines of brown trim on the edge of the skirt ( i missed this when i first made mine ), a patch under her right armpit and two layers of lace at the end of the sleeves...

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/TFjul07-02.jpg
closer up of the previous

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/1025_9.jpg
dont know how accurate youre getting, but you can see a hole in her waistline in this one xD

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/scargis02.jpg
back...pretty basic...fringe goes all the way around and it looks like it laces up in the back

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/gis.jpg
here you can see the floral section is just a panel on top of a regular petticoat skirt with frill at the bottom.

http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/?action=view&current=scargis01.jpg
a good shot of the only-on-the-side-hem ruching....notice theres a thin and thicker paler stripes along the bottom of the petticoat frill

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c347/XVashX/Sparrow/Marked%20Men/fanci.jpg <-- the girls i aforementioned. the only few things i am picky about with hers are the tassle trim ( its a little too tassly and not enough matted fringe-y for my liking...the darkness of the applique and the floral underskirt seems to be floral in its entirety whereas in one of the above pics you can see its just a front panel....but yeesh....what a job they did! *_* )

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/strumpet.jpg <-- theres mine if you'd like to use it for some bonus reference. there are a couple more in my gallery.

Good luck!!! cant wait to see it and share mine once its revamped!! :D hope those helped lots!

ps. does anyone know where i can get really good quality beard extensions for my jack? being the pirate he is...he has misplaced them. there are a couple on ebay but a little more pricey than what we found them for before ( very high quality... $15 with glue ). worse comes to worse i could just make them but...anywhere that can get them to me before the 25th would be great!

I see what you mean about those girls costumes...they have some excellent aspects...but....there's always the but isn't there?

I'm actually thinking of doing Scarlett though (I make a better redhead ;) ) but all of this is very very helpful should I ever have someone want me to make Giselle for them...

too darn anal about details I be...

lol you know I just remembered how Jack told Giselle "of course it makes you look fat"...and all I could think is "where? she's a stick!"

wish I could help with the beard extensions but I have never looked into it before and would probably find all the expensive stuff :( have a habit of doing that....

LOL Super Strumpet! Any time they wear red *chuckle*

I love the fabric combination for her outfit...I've been looking at materials too, just cause, and boy there is really nothing close to her stuff, then again it was hand picked probably only so many yards of the stuffs, etc.

but the group of folks that I got to hang out with at the Mickey's Trick or treat Party were (as always) fabulous and kind! especially to my son (world's biggest POTC fan) ;) he had such a blast my little Will Turner...

maybe you can spot a familiar face in some of the pics?

I know its not perfect, actually its quite horrible if I do say so myself, but it holds some sentimental value to me because I wore it to my first con. Hey guys, I've been thinking of doing a Jack Sparrow cosplay, I'm not sure when for exactly, but I have around a year, maybe less, to work on it. I was wondering how much this might cost me, and where would be a good place to start? I've tried thinking about it but I've been so busy it's hard to find a good starting point.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, this is my 1st post :)
---------------------------------
Tathar :
"how much this might cost me ?" : Lot of time.... And If you want something that match the original costume, it will cost you a lot of atochas (Belts,Buckles, baldric/ Buttons / Beads, Kuchi / Rings ....).
What can be home made (from my POV):

Wig
Coat
Waistcoat
Beads
Tricorn
Boots
Flintlock (Toy mod )
Compass (Toy mod )
Cutlass (Toy mod )

"where would be a good place to start?"
My 1st item was the bandana (Mango Fever). One year ago....

nb: No one have noticed how much the cjs80's waistcoat was accurate ??
Ask him why.... (lucky guy :skidude2: )

For Shirt & pants:
If you can do it yourself, use simplicity 4923 pattern.
Else, try Topnoch (http://www.topnotchcostumes.com/) or Costumebase (http://stores.ebay.com/costumebases_POTC_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ18137889Q QftidZ2QQtZkm) (breeches are pretty good)

It is nice to see this thread getting some more activity. I thought I would add my latest creation. Dead Man's Chest / At World's End leather tricorn for Captain Jack Sparrow. It took awhile to make but I finally got it finished. I used a wood hat block this time around to create the bowl so it really looks like a hat and not a "bowl." Also tested out a new combination of water based antique brown stain mixed with a little bit of kelly green to give it that more weathered, seasoned look.

I plan on using the old fashion method of weather aka using various grit sandpaper and some rubbing alcohol but not too much is needed. The overall weathering effect was done using the leather stains.

How did I make this? Well it has taken over 2 years of research, trial and error and basically learning On The Job meaning making it as I go.

I cant believe it... because of time constraints I looked around ebay for a costume... found one guy selling the shirt, waistcoat, breeches, sash, two belts a decent wig and bandanna... but I lost out... and I still dont get how... that wasnt an automatic bid that was the same ammount as mine... and I would know... I was watching it for an hour...

Tathar 2 questions to help you:
What is your dealine and budget ?
What are you looking for ?

// nb : For ebay, the seller can choose between 2 buyers for the same amout.

No, I think for ebay if you bid the same amount it goes to the earlier bid.

My deadline is in just under a year, Im not sure of the exact date, and it may seem like a while but I do have other stuff to work on as well you see.

Technically, Im looking for everything, but Im not worried about finding a shirt or something which will look right for the pants. I am more worried about the waistcoat and a decent sash to be honest with you.

Sash : Curently, the best you can find is.... An IKEA curtain (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30111964). You'll have to sew/glue it to make it 12 ft. Then, follow this great tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXPWZhjddcI) (thans Neon :) ) to weather it.

Waiscoat : The best would be to make your own (>> tutorial (http://cjskttccostumewiki.pbwiki.com/Making-a-Waistcoat). Else, Sithworld on ebay (search: sparrow vest).

For the baldric, i sugest you to buy a Costumebase (ebay), and change the buckle for an AMCE (ebay) or better, purchase a Sithworld (ACME baldric is the best, but currently no aviable).

Why thank you... thats quite helpful.

Costumebase was the original source of these auction items. The guy bought them, wore them once and sold them. So it would've been much cheaper to get them from him, since costumebase's shipping is ridiculous... because its all from Singapore

Under a year to put together Jack? Plenty of time mate! I you tried this three years ago you would be taking all three years to get Jack ready.

Just start scrounging eBay for deals and other selling off items. For many Jack is ending but for others it is good to see he is still a Cosplay favorite!

Tathar :
About costumebase, do not buy belts (Anna Maria & Sun/Moon), they're mini sized. Else, their rings are pretty good (but i don't know how they define the size, i had to adjust them (too big)).

Edit:
Breeches known to be the best are there:
>> Breeches's pic (http://www.blackbearhistoricalclothing.com/pictures.html/linenbreechdf.JPG) (you'll have to dye it).
>> BlackBeard Web site (http://www.blackbearhistoricalclothing.com/breeches.html)
I have a costumebase, with mods it does the trick (cut / sew / dye / change buttons). But it comes with a really bad finish. It's certainly better for you to buy Blackbeard pants.

Now I see what your saying about the quality and finish and such of all these things (the breeches in particular), but looking at Blackbeard's, I noticed that I dont have THAT much money to be spending on them, which is why I saw Costumebase as an alternative, since everything is on best offer I thought it would be an idea to see how much I could barter it down, then have it sent with combined shipping.

Either way, I still have time, and I have a fair ammount of money, my disadvantage is if my parents drop in and say 'thats too unreasonable', then usually its the last word, and I cant do anything about it. In about June I'm going to America again and am hoping to find a few things (not sure what, hoping to get lucky) looking around in Costume and Thrift stores.

Sorry for the double post, but its been a while, I'm now left with boots to get (I think I know what I'll do for those, but Im still open to suggestions) and then the belts and baldric, and a wig... any ideas? I havent seen any of the belts which are the correct size, so I need some help...

Thanks

Hm.... I think Im doing relatively well with my jack so far, still gotta finish making my sword, but ok.

Im wondering what the cheapest option for accurate belts is, any ideas? Ive looked on ebay, but they seem pretty expensive, unless Im wrong.

Wediznutt

For the belts I think you also need to look at budget and your talent. How much do yo want to spend on raw materials and try to construct the belts yourself. Here are my recommendations from cheapest to more expensive. Cheapest method will give you costume pieces but not very screen accurate and more expensive will give you more screen accruate but will require some construction.

It also depends upon which move version you want to achieve. POTC 1 belt buckle is known as the "flower" belt buckle. Reference photo. Movie version on the left and mine on the right which was cast from the actual movie version.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20COTBP%20Belt/CSHandCJSbeltandbuckle.jpg

POTC 2/3 now has two belts. The top one was still called the "flower" belt buckle but it was slightly larger and had a beveled edge to it. Reference picture of mine. Made by ACME Brand on eBay.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Patina/02afterbelt_resize.jpg

The second belt often referred to as the "Ana Maria" belt buckle (because the character wore it in POTC 1). I found it on a Santa Clause belt from the UK about three years ago. That started up a buying frenzy from many Jacks to buy that buckle. Reference picture of mine.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20bottom%20belt/CIMG8623_resize.jpg

So here are the options:

1. Find the Zizzle plastic belt buckles that were sold awhile back. They were only for POTC 2/3. You may only find them on eBay if you are lucky. Many Jacks on Cosplay have purchased these buckles and modded them with paint to make them look more weathered. They come with plastic belts. These could easily be replaced by pleather.

2. Costumebase on eBay sells the entire set of buckles for under $35.00 but they are very small. Almost 20% than the movie versions. I bought a set for use when my son gets to 4 feet tall. That will be the perfect scale for him. I'm not bashing these buckles because many other Jacks use them. They are econimical and fairly accurate to the detail but they are much smaller. You would still need to get leather or pleather to construct the belts. I think Costumebase also sells them ready made with the belt but some people have said they fall apart fairly easily over time so you may need to reinforce them.

3. You can also find some buckles from ACME brand or other eBay sellers online. ACME has the best screen accurate buckles. At last time he posted on eBay they were $35.00 each. Believe me that is an excellent price compared to the $75.00 each back in the pirate frenzy two years ago. You would still need to order some belt blanks to construct the belts. This would also require you to purchase some leather dye. NeonHurricane on this thread made his belt and stained it using shoe polish and actually achieved very good results. You could also use pleather as a more economical solution but it would still require some stitching.

Cruise through this forum or do a Search for terms like "Jack Sparrow belts" OR "Jack Sparrow buckles" because many people in the past have asked the very same questions you are posting. It makes it easier rather than reproducing the same info. Hope this helps a little bit.

My dream would be to cosplay Tia Dalma! She was my favorite!
I just do not have the skin tone for her ~_~

I know my boyfriend would die if I made him a Barbossa costume.

The only POTC Cosplay I've seen is Jack Sparrow. They were all pretty decent. I would love to have seen an Elizabeth or anyone else from the Movies. I scanned a few pages of this thread and everyone did an amazing job on their costumes!

Make up, Sammie_San. just go to where you buy it normally, and buy foundation for a darker skin tone. My cousins did that for a film they were making for fun.

The face really isn't a problem it would be the rest of my body ^^;;;
I will definatly look into it though. I know there is a good brand of stage make-up that works really well and lasts long and since it's made for performance it can survive a convention.

I would love to do this costume. Like I said it would be a dream xD

who cares! :toothy: I'm a short Japanese/American girl... I'm hugely procrastinating on making a Jack costume and Elizabeth one....

stage make-up is obviously the best as it's made for things like 'extreme conditions of stage lighting' but can get pricey or hard to find... but regular make up is made for everyday and inexpensive and everywhere. My cousins put the foundation on their arms too.. with no problems.

I'm not giving up on my costume. After all, I bought a sewing machine.

Hee Hee! Wow this thread is slowly being brought back! Nice!!!! I started at POTC 4 thread awhile back but now it is buried deep in the recesses of cosplay.com!

By the way for those who didn't know it....the burlap bear used to be pirate Marty's. The scene of Jack yelling, "All hands on deck! I want movement! I want to see movement!" the camera pans across pirate Marty asleep in his hammock hugging the bear.

I highly doubt you will see much changed in Jack's costume in POTC 4! Why? You don't mess with a signature outfit for a very well known character. Think what it would be like if Indiana Jones showed up in IJ 5 with a cowboy hat rather than the signature fedora OR if Indy showed up in a t-shirt with no leather jacket? Not good!!! You may see more items in Jack's hair or more danglies from his belt (UGH!! Please Penny Rose NO MORE danglies) but I doubt you will see changes in the main costume items.

Hopefully Teague and Ana Maria will return but who knows. Zoey Soldana is now fairly successful so taking a step back into that role would be for the fun of it!

For Halloween, I finally decided to do Tia Dalma - a costume I've wanted to do since I first laid eyes on it. My gf will be Jack Sparrow. So far I've mostly gathered a massive quantity of materials and cut out some fabric. The level of detail on Tia Dalma's dress is quite daunting, but I'm really eager to give it a shot.

I'm planning on putting together Elizabeth's "Captain/Pirate King" costume from At World's End for a medieval fair in a few months (without the hat :P)
For the embroidery, there's no way I'm going to have time to actually embroider the whole thing by that time, so I'll probably use fabric paint instead. I've seen couching as another method but I think even that would take up too much time.
Does anybody know of any good patterns to use for the coat? I've seen two Simplicity patterns as suggestions but they both seem to be out of print. Seems as though I can get at least one of them inexpensively from elsewhere online, but has anyone seen any newer patterns that would be easy to find in a store?

I just finished the forth movie and I fell in love with the Spanish captain (?)'s outfit at the fountain of youth. I'm only guessing that the era is 1700 or so - but I would appreciate any further help that can be offered.

I adore his hat!
