Alright guys. Im back from Pirates and Princesses and I am still in SHOCK over what happened.

I got tons and tons of compliments from people all night on my costume. Some people wanted pictures of me, cast members complimented me. I was on cloud nine over my hard work the whole night.

But then we met jack sparrow. We waited in line about 80 minutes. When we got to the front, the man who escorted us to see Jack, looked at me and told me to wait a minute. He came back, exclaimed 'Tia Dalma! Jack is going to be so excited to see you!!' He took us to wait in the 2nd room, where there were 3 or 4 families in front of us. The second we got there I was SO NERVOUS. Then we got up to the front, and it was my turn next. Since they have stage lights on Jack, he couldnt see me, until i stepped into the light. The look on his face was priceless. He looked flustered, and he stammered and excalimed 'Tia Dalma!' as he took my hand and kissed it, the rest of the conversation went like this: (keep in mind i was trying to keep myself from throwing up/wetting myself lol)

Jack: Its been so long since the last time i saw you in your shack
me: yes it has
jack: So sorry about the jar of dirt - i broke.
me: that <i>was</i> unfortunate.
jack: you look amazing - do the bit about the destiny...
me: (in a perfect Tia impression) You have a touch of destiny about you
jack: AND she does the accent, I think we should give her a round of applause

suddenly i look out, and see about 20 people in the small area. Most of them are Disney employees and all of them are taking lots and lots of pictures. They all started clapping.

Jack: Thanks for letting me know about the whole barbossa-monkey thing too
me: well congratulations on escaping the Kracken
jack: eh! dont reveal how *we* did it, or no one will go see the 3rd movie, and none of us will make any money!
jack: and im sorry i stole this ring (takes off the purpleish ring and shows it)
me: well give it back
jack: no
me: you also stole my vile.
jack: yes. the vile. Sorry about that too.
jack: how about a portrait?

We took pictures...

jack: well. This has been a touching moment for all of us!
(everyone laughs)
Jack: Touching in a Disney appropriate way of course!
Jack: Tia, thank you for coming to see me. And I commend you on your hard work, really a great job (eveyone claps)
Jack: you know that i know you, and you know me, and we know each other, and there has been lots of knowing.
me: yes, i'll be knowing you later (wink)

Cue Disney management who came at me to tell me how much they loved my costume and would they be allowed to possibly use my photos for promotional stuff. I signed a few things and gave them some information, and we went outside so I could sit down.

Im still in shock. It was amazing and im sure im leaving things out. Here are the pics

We SO need some type of Pirates and Princesses here out on the left coast! Arrrr!

Alright all you left coasters we need to organize a Pirates Of The Caribbean get together before the premiere!!!! Maybe at Downtown Disney? Or we could meet at the Port Of Long Beach onboard the tall ships Exy Johnson or Irving Johnson!

For those of you familiar with Disney and the Shrunken Head Ned exhibit....I give you the beginnings of Shrunken Head Ned. I told me wench that I think at this beginning stage that it resembles BeetleJuice from the Howard Stern show!!

Start out with a pound of CelluClay in a large bowl!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8710_exposure_resize.jpg

Add 32 ounces of hot water!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8711_exposure_resize.jpg

Let the hot water get warm and soak into the CelluClay!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8712_exposure_resize.jpg

Kneed the CelluClay as if you were mixing dough! You will get very dirty and sticky.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8713_exposure_resize.jpg

Use a balloon, newspaper, or mesh wiring as a internal mold structure.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8715_exposure_resize.jpg

Create the neckline.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8717_exposure_resize.jpg

Add your balloon to the middle of your neckline and start covering the entire balloon with Celluclay. Be sure to keep the main mixture wet because it will begin to dry out.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Shrunk%20Head%20Ned/CIMG8718_exposure_resize.jpg

Final construction of a shrunken head. I will sand and work on the fine details later. Paint with acrylic based paint and seal. I will also add the blond hair, moustache, beard, and jute cords later. The thing was about three pounds wet but eventually dried in 24-48 hours and was about 8 ounces.

Top down view:

Right side veiw:

Side view:

The project took under an hour and a half which included mixing of the CelluClay!

That is Rob who plays Jack in the pic. I met him at Mega-con that was when he gave me his card. I am helping him make Elizabeth's wedding dress. I You went on the best night because when I was there, it was 30 degrees. Lucky. Well good job on your costume again. Oh, are you going to the Tampa Bay renaissance fair?

I will pics of the locket later. I got it from Ebay and took about 3 months to gert here.

I attended the Renn Faire in Ft. Lauderdale this weekend, and wore Elizabeth Swann from DMC (pirate attire). Most just called me "pirate lady" but hey, it worked. The costume was made by Tess.

I am really looking forward into Dragon-con this year in August. It seem I am the only one out of my hangout group that really wants to go. Is anyone interested on going? I need to find room mates for a five night stay at one of the hotels. It would be about $187.50 per person for four people in a room.

It would be fun because they have a parade where which we can be in.

I finally finished stringing together my CJS bandana beads! Thanks to Toji Chiba who found the Burmese 5 pya coin. The overall size of the dangle is a little short due to the smaller coin and green/white/green bead combination. I also had to create my own brown colored barrel shaped bead. I believe it is red whiteheart. I also used a real antique red skunk trade bead and an African brass bead. These beads will have to suffice until Master Replica ships their verison.

Probably a dump question, but how did you get the hole in the coin? :chatah:

Thanks! I am still on the hunt for larger green/white/green beads probably made of glass or jade (color matches perfectly) but I don't feel like buying entire strands. I need to go to a bead store to find them individually...!

I wrapped the coin in a cloth and held it with a pair of needle nose pliers. I used the smalles drill bit I had 1/64 and a low speed drill to make the hole. I than used a Dremel tool with the same bit to clean up the edges. A wire ring from a keychain was downsized and placed through the hole. I added a drop of superglue to the part where the hole meets the wire ends for security!!!

Thanks. I will give it a try.

I know the feeling about buying an entire strand of beads for 1 or 2 beads and then after receiving them they would not work or I did not like them.

A wig you ask? Well let ole Captain Jack help you out!

First - How much are you willing to pay? For Tia I would get a GOOD quality wig and not one of those cheap-o Halloween wigs.

Second - Are you willing to invest some time into making dreads? Looking at your costume I would have to say YES. Synthetic hair as one of my How To Guides shows how to make them. Sally's has the large bundles for about $3.99. Go with black #1 and off black #1B for Tia. Maybe throw in some dark brown #2 I think? Look up Sassy Color Chart in Google and you will see the different colors. Kanekalon is the way to go! Steam away!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Wig/CIMG6872.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Wig/CIMG6879.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Wig/CIMG6888.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Wig/CIMG6889.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Wig/CIMG6917_exposure.jpg

Third - The wig! Human hair or synthetic meaning Kanekalon again. Human wigs can cost around $200-$300 but I cannot vouch for quality. Synthetic wigs can run about $50 - $100.

Here is a couple of eBay sites that I am considering upgrading my wig.

Human Hair wigs at Rocky Mountain Beauty!

http://stores.ebay.com/ROCKY-MOUNTAIN-BEAUTY_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

Synthetic hair wigs at Jasmine Wigs!

http://stores.ebay.com/JASMINE-Wig-Importers

And Finally - You have fairly long black/brown? hair so you could go the route of making dreads and putting them in as hair extensions. You can by hair extension attachments by the bundle off of eBay for around $15.00 or you can also buy real human hair/synthetic hair extensions off of eBay for around $50.00 and they come with the the attachments. I am considering buying some of these myself and making dreads with a human hair wig....but expensive!

Edited and added later: Yeah! Just looked at your gallery and I think you could easily go the extension route. You have lots of hair and could probably get away with 15-20 dread extensions.

Tia pic:
http://miceage.skyfirehosting.com/mc080906pics/mc080906g.jpg

I think if you are on a budget the synthetic hair extensions is the way to go! That way you can make the dreads yourself and manipulate the extensions and put them in your hair wherever you want....

Hope this helps! From one dreadlock pirate to another dreadlock voodoo queen! Oooo! Forgot! Stephanierocks should chime in here at anytime!!!! And remember to send me a couple more rings and chicken feet to ole Captain Jack!

I think I found a good wig to get.
http://www.maxwigs.com/discount-milly-by-lacey-costume-wigs-p1625.html
I just have to add some different dreads to it like blonde and brown. I can use your dread pics to make them.

Again Mahalo.

Yes I am very disappointed by the way the rings look. The amethyst ring looks good though. I guess that is what you get for $9.99 vs Noble Collections $100+ rings.

But for a cosplayer on a $$budget$$ it seems like an excellent price. Besides if someone is into inspecting your rings that close I would have to say they are a little too close and in your personal space. What do the kids say nowadays, "Your all up in my grill?"

My first thread that I read when I join, and I am finally at the end of it (making my first post). I really feel like I know you guys, LOL! Your hard work, dedication, and steady stream of helpful information and photos are much appreciated. You guys are enlightening and inspiring.

Ahoy the ship! I'm new to cosplay, but not new to costuming or performing. I was pirate before pirate was cool.

I'm off to investigate other (and hopefully shorter, lol) forum threads, but my heart will remain here, I imagine.

Too bad you guys seem to be mostly on the East Coast, I don't suppose there's a huge chance I'd see you at the San Diego ComiCon. :(

if anyone is looking to buy a DMC/AWE jack sparrow ana maria belt.
this is the time to buy, as prices are going down a little due to all 3 suppliers selling them at the same time.(quite rare)

i would so get this, if not for the 2 i already got. one from sith-world just recently, one from acme 6 months ago. lol anyone want my acme one?

Ahh! So that was you that made the purchase on the one I was watching. ACME stuff is good but there is little to NO communication from the Seller. I emailed the Seller about 2 months before Halloween regarding the DMC baldric buckle and they stated they would sell some a week before Halloween. Four email NO REPONSES later I just gave up. I recently emailed them about a Buy It Now deal for the Dragon Ring and the Gold Flower Ring. It has been a week and NO RESPONSE. Yet when I did a Buy It Now on a flower belt buckle it arrived in three days! What gives? They are located in the same city as me...Los Angeles!

Oh well time to take my bidness elsewhere....I do like there stuff!

There is some dude in San Paulo, Brazil that is selling the lower belt buckle for $35.00 on eBay. It is even nicely aged. If I already didn't have one I would probably buy one from him. Go buy yourself a belt blank for $13.00 at Zelikovitz Leathers and Crafts and save LOTS of mula!

http://stores.ebay.com/Zelikovitz-Leathers-and-Crafts_Belt-Blanks_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ229272QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Or if you don't have the time just buy one of the above aforementioned belts! Just giving those of us on a budget ideas.......

Funny when I started researching my belt buckle back in August NO ONE was selling them on eBay and I ended up spending $35 British Pounds (about $68.00 US Dollars) for a Santa Claus belt that had the same buckle. I still have the belt but use the buckle for CJS after painting.

http://shop.joke.co.uk/epages/jokecouk.storefront/EN/Product/11964

Later I saw an eBay seller selling the same belt with no mods as an Official Captain Jack Sparrow belt!

I purchased the flower belt buckle from acme and we made the belt. Turned out really great.

Been watching the belt buckle from brazil, but really didn't want to punch all those holes in a belt. Wasn't sure what quality the buckle would be.

If I get a chance today, I will post a picture of both of us dressed up in our pirate outfit, me-just a wench, hubby - Captain Jack.

By the way, the new rings at Master Replicas do not come in different sizes. Just pre-ordered the button ring and the stolen ring. If they don't fit, maybe I can pillage one somewhere else.

The actually don't look too bad. He/She aged them quite nicely. I think all the people that are now making this buckle most likely purchased the same one, made a mold, and started casting pewter copies. The buckle from Jokes UK is far too detailed to be forged, detailed, and shaped by hand. I may find another buckle and be Santa for my son next Christmas.

Thanks.

Ours was taken on the Disney Wonder in January. I believe Neon's was taken on the the Disney Magic cruise ship.

They have a pirate night during the cruise where you can dress up. Really neat night and party.

After the cruise, we went to Disney World for the Pirate and Princess party. Had a good time. Some people thought we worked there and were part of the party. Had a lot of photo request to have their picture taken with Capt. Jack. We weren't as lucky as "stefunkerocks" - we were politely asked not to take any more pictures with people and to tell them that the "real" Captain Jack was in Frontierland.

Where are you at sparrowfan? Yes I complained about $14.00 shipping through DHL when I purchased two of the MR bandana beads. Outrageous shipping and the fact we have to wait about 2-3 months just to get them.

Regards to the belt buckle! Acrylic paint mate! Check out what I did to it after receiving it!

http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=983917

A little black mixed with white to get the gray. Paint! Allow to dry. Use sea green and a small damp sponge and patina away. Allow to dry. Seal with a matte acrylic sealer. Works great.

I am thinking about soaking the buckle in dilute acid to break off the chrome plating and allow it age naturally.

I can't wait until Disney Magic out here in 2008! Pirate Night here we go! At Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween at Disney California Adventure we got stopped by security and stated we couldn't take pictures. I said we weren't so I think they were being pre-emptive. I had to tell small children that Mickey wouldn't let me sign autographs too. Now I am hoping that if we ever have Pirates and Princesses out here in DLR that I may go into character as I did that night. Many people mistook me as a CM until I had to say NO I wasn't a cast member. Still a fun night. Pics in My Gallery!

Email MR customer service and ask them if they can do a combined shipping. They should be able to delay shipping out the beads so that they can add them to the rings. DHL is expensive shipping company but if you live overseas it probably is even more! Doesn't hurt to ask them.:geek:

Oh well time to take my bidness elsewhere....I do like there stuff!

I must say... for something called "Master Replica" and touting as high quality, I was a bit disappointed that the first ring started wearing and the outer coating wore off after only three months. Cosplay and display only definately. and One size fits all most likely again.... and that ring should NOT have fit any of MY fingers for being a 'replica' ring. I have small hands and short fingers. I can fit in those Power Ranger gloves in the toy section perfectly.

The ship that was used as the "Interceptor" in the first movie tours around the western seaboard. I got to walk around on that one shortly after Curse of the Black Pearl came out. It was a blast to talk to some of the crew that had been there for the filming! I wish I had the pics of it here, but they're up at my parents' house.

Yeah i was gonna say it is the Lady Washington out of the Seattle area. A friend was in and produced a 20 minute pirate movie and they used the ship about 2 years before they filmed POTC. It never did get picked up to become a compleated feature.

And someday when they send me the pictures I made boots for a POTC News Years party for a Vegas Casino

If all else fails find a pattern for a George Washington or Ben franklin coat and use imagination. Go to a local sewing or craft store that sells supplies, check and see what company patterns are on sale and look in the catalog. I have about 30 pattern sets for $1 or $2 each From McCalls, Buttrick and Simplicity at the time POTC was just out So nor real pirate outfits other then the cheasy adult halloween costume. But every hit movie tends to get Offcial and Knock off pattern sets from those three companies

When it comes to the Tampa ren faire... hmm... never been to a ren faire before but it sounds like fun. And of course it lets me get back into CJS again (Right? I've seen pics at CJS's at ren faires before), so I'll definitely think about heading down there. I'll keep ya posted.

I've been studying the pictures of her costume for POTC 3: AWE...and I find it fascinating because her costume is really a mish-mash of cultures...kinda:

Her boots are Mandarin Winter boots according to "Dragons and Silk From the Forbidden City"...

her coat embellishment is more East Indian than Chinese (or seems that way) and it would seem more like a very long kurta with alterations to mimic a chinese coat because its not as full as a chinese coat would be....as far as the pants go I'm thinking silk just like her "undershirt"...and the color appears black but then again looks very dark navy blue because of this picture:

http://www.costumersguide.com/potc3/brocade3.jpg

then again...it looks black...she wears leather wrist guards as well right?? that's not part of her shirt?:

After two weeks of air drying and numerous trips to the oven at around 100 degrees the Celluclay head finally is dry! It has gone through a major paint job with acrylic paint. I used a black and white (gray) mixture as a base coat, added blending medium and black with a sponge to get the splotched look, and finally blended in some tan color. The final product was sealed with a matte acrylic sealer both inside and out. The inside was not painted.

I have done my Jack Sparrow Boots with the Boot-Tutorial from sithcamarto and i also have done "covers" for my first version of Black-Jack Sparrow. The are made of leather-fabric and glued together...works fine for me and i think it will work for everyone else, too^^

I'm currently looking in to adding the tricorn hat to my Captain Jack ensemble. Unfortunatley I can't really afford an actual leather replica, so I'm asking for opinions on good "budget sparrow" hats.

I did a search on eBay, and it actually looks like there are some pretty good hats out there. But I always like getting other opinions on things, particularly ones that come in larger sizes. My head is a bit larger than average, so with the wig and headscarf and everything it seems it might be hard to find a hat that fits. Hopefully that won't be a problem.

They've got this article out in time for POTC 3:
http://w2.yorkdispatch.com/ydweekend/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2963

"Rank-and-file pirates dressed in duller colors faded by sunlight and washing and stained with tar, blood and waterproofing tung oil, according to Davies. A 19th century scroll depicting the 1809 battle off Lantau island shows pirates wearing loose blue frocks and white pants with blue socks pulled up to knee level."

I thought that was interesting because then that could possibly mean Keira's (Liz) costume is a dark navy blue according to such research...never mind its a couple hundred years later...:D make that maybe a hundred

Florida Downtown Disney... AWE openin' day... Somebody in need of a Captain? Sounds like me cue! Count me in savvy?

Now I have to quest for a West Coast Tia Dalma!

Aye! It does seem that pretty much all of them are on the east! Poor bloke, no voodoo queens to... "know"... as it were. So hey... yet another reason to head on over FL aye? P&P events, Tia Dalmas all over the place. ;)

Actually there's news that Pirates and Princesses is returning... THIS YEAR! Yeah! Strangely enough it seems that in late summer (August-Sept) there will be some more Pirate and Princess party dates. Cool huh?

And lastly, I finally broke down and got a proper wig head to place my headgear on. 'Bout bloody time eh?

Well I haven't worn any of my CJS stuff since December but have put everything together late this evening for a once over before Sundays Ultimate Pirate Fan Event. It was nice to see all my new items, upgrades, and updates all in one region. Please excuse the shorts and the lack of my face but I wasn't wearing any CJS above the neck or below the thighs.

Very happy with the look! Can't wait for Pyrate Con, Anime Expo, Comic-Con and most of all the PREMIERE! Although Sunday will be a BLAST!

Wake up me hearties yo ho! Holy shitake mushrooms it is 1:30am here in CALI! Go to bed you guys!

We made the news!

http://cbs4.com/topstories/local_story_077170322.html

if that doesnt work, search pirates, it should come up. Thats my mom whos interviewed towards the end of the long video, and in the article.

Trailer was absolutley breathtaking, this is going to be the biggest movie ever. We had a blast.

I had the pleasure of finally meeting NeonHurricane, who ended up taking 1st place in the costume contest, (i took 2nd) It wasnt crowded, and it seemed there was a brigade of teachers, who were on some VIP list.... not as many pirates fans as i expected... anyway! Had a blast! Free goodies were awesome, I gotta get to bed.. after 8 hours round trip of driving im dead.

Wow I missed alot since last time I posted. I had a blast at the Ren fair but my camera wouldn't work for some reason. I am going this weekend again, so this time I will have some pics.

I just watched the AWE trailer while watching Dancing With the Stars. Oh my gosh!! I can't wait!!! I kept rewinding it over and over to see every little detail. I love TiVo! I paused one part to see what Tia looked like. She is actually wearing her locket and she is wearing a black shawl around her. Also she looks alot darker and there is more oil on her skin. I have to keep working on my dress.

From a post on KTTC.com Toby was in Chicago. I did see the guy you see modeling in ACME brand and Barbossa Leather. Also met the owner of TopNotchCostumes.com. She said that her Captain Jack was wearing the last frock coat made of the special weave material. She stated that the fabric was getting hard to find! Also a female CJS that said she worked with Toby on some costume pieces.

I also had me bum squeezed by an Unidentified Captain Jack Sparrow. Does that mean I was "glomped?" I think it was the guy you see on TopNotchCostumes.com! He was wearing a nice frock coat.

The costume upgrades are all in the details. All the posts to My Gallery look plain but put them all together and you got near obsessive perfection. I also found the perfect rabbit pelts and the exact color. I will be making some polymer clay paws (claws and pads) modeled after my cat and sew that into the pelts.

Overall it was an excellent event and now the rumors are flying regarding the future of Captain Jack Sparrow...............................

By the way this is what I had to put up with being Captain Jack at the event.....

Hi Kids!

im going to stop lurking and jump right in.

I just made a barbossa coat and it looks FANTASTIC! can't wait to share it with yous as soon as i get a couple more pieces together.

also, i started a good chunk of Jacks coat tonight. just curious if anyone had good pictures of the back of his coat?? im pretty much done it already but if i could have more reference i'd like to try to touch it up and make it more accurate. i think the only issue i had with the simplicity pattern is that the godets were more on the sides whereas it seems like his are more in the back. sadly, i won't be able to change that....it still looks pretty darn good though!

after i finish jacks coat, hopefully this weekend, i'm starting on my Giselle dress. Oh boy. cant imagine the task that puppy is gonna be. and then if i have time im making one of lizzies simpler asian outfits. the one seen here actually... http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/walt_disney/pirates_of_the_caribbean__at_world_s_end/atworldsend_big8.jpg

has a lot of good quality screencaps from cotbp, there you may finde a few gisell screens^^

and for my fellow jacks: have you noticed that the position of the square metal bead was changed after the first days of shooting? look at the pictuires of jack while talking to barbossa on the black pear ("watching me sail away on MY ship...etc") and than look at the rest... the bead in this scenes is clearly the round one that afterwards has been put onto the place the square metal bead was and vice versa.

just look at this one: http://pirates.hollywood.com/gallery/albums/albums/movies/potc-tcotbp-caps-1251-1500/potc-1-1270.jpg

and at this one: http://pirates.hollywood.com/gallery/albums/albums/movies/potc-tcotbp-caps-1251-1500/potc-1-1278.jpg

the metal beads switched places

Hi Kids!

im going to stop lurking and jump right in.

Oh boy. cant imagine the task that puppy is gonna be. and then if i have time im making one of lizzies simpler asian outfits. the one seen here actually... http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/walt_disney/pirates_of_the_caribbean__at_world_s_end/atworldsend_big8.jpg

aaand ... thats all for now!!

anyone has pictures of the back of jacks coat or ANY of giselle, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share!!
<3

its been a hoot lurking through this thread and all of you that have posted images have done a fantastic job!!! congrats!

Rather than "lurking" we're "observing"...lol...but seriously:

I found that pattern to be easy as well but you're right the godets are to the side when they should be on the back and it should be slightly fuller (referencing the end fight in POTCBP). But I suppose if Andrea Schewe (the designer of that pattern) did it "right" it would in effect require more fabric and additional tweakings some sewers don't want to deal with...let's face it the pattern companies cater to those who want quick and easy or at least easier than a period piece...drag I know but hey there are patterns out there made by the "little guy" (and gal) that are period accurate and will actually get you the exact look with minimal tweaking...

I can't wait to see pics of Barbossa's coat...love his costume not enough of Barbossa or Norrington (Admiral/Commodore/scruffington)...:bigtu:

You're going to do Giselle? oh how funny! I'm searching for good screencaps of Scarlet to make her costume...I've always wanted to have a "painted" face..lol...

LunaCat:You're right that was really cool...ok the whole thing was awesome...I wonder if they did that for the trailer only though? hmm have to wait till May 25...arrrrgh...

Toji_Chiba:Thanks for the screencaps those are so helpful in soooo many ways!
oh hey you're right...it does look that way regarding the beads...

Oh I do have something useful to add. New Simplicity pattern for Mongol or Chinese outfit here:

http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3772

and there is the hat in question from a previous unanswered question of mine...from another board...lol...yay! minimal pattern drafting work yay!!!

Piratelife4me: Happy Birthday :) have fun!

I used the leftover CelluClay and put these little babies together. I was supposed to go as Cannibal Jack Sparrow to Mickey's Halloween Treat last year but ran out of time putting together the rest of the costume...now time is a luxury!

I used the remaining Celluclay and molded each toe based off of a photograph of the toe necklace I took at the El Capitan Theater during the DMC premiere. I used an old Glad plastic container and cut out the U shaped nails and embedded them in the still wet toes. The nails were baked with the toes for about 3 hours at 100 degrees to ensure complete drying and no molding....like my shrunken head molded.

The toes will be painted and the nails discolored and glued back into each toe....now to remember which toenail goes with which toe after they are removed...hmmmm!

Yeah, I noticed that her hair is really long. I just have to buy a very long wig and dread the whole thing. Also, you know those Jamaican cap/wig with the dreads attached to the cap? I might buy a bunch of them to add because I like the way their dreads look.
Another thing: if you know anyone that knows how the make sweaters, mittens, and such, they could probably make the shaw no problem. My mother would be making mine.

I went to the ren fair again for the pirate weekend. I expected that there would be a tons of Jack look-a-likes because they had a contest for that. There was hardly any anywhere and the ones that competed didn't look to well.

alright, since i just don't have the time nor the materials to re-do what i've done of jacks coat, i decided to just leave the godets where they are on the outer edges of the back panels as the simplicity pattern calls for.

if i had it my way, i'd redo it all to make it perfectly accurate, alas, my lack of funds and time forbid me from doing so. i looked up a few other jacks that i personally consider to be the best and all of theirs were the same as well...i'll just have to do some optical illusioning to make it look like theyre inwards more...

anyways!!!

little nitpicky question...the bottom hem of jacks coat...at the inner and outer lining folded in and hemmed inside and pressed flat on the out? or does the outer lining hem up around the inside?? i doubt there are even any pictures that show this very very minor detail and i'll probably end up going the second route, but i'd like to know for reference still. :)

thanks everyone! and i should have some progress pics a little bit later today. and some of the mostly complete barbossa as well. :D

Okay, now I have plenty of time to work and upgrade my dress. I already finished the belt(pics later) and since my mom is working on the black shawl, I will be working on her shoes.

I bought these simple shoes from target.
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_19/601-1143601-0711301?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000N29DSA

I am going use the same fabric I used for my upper skirt and just simply sew it on. I wore these 1800 century boots at Mega-con and man were they painful. So I think this is better than anything.

Also I notice that there is this patch of fabric on her right side of the bodice.

id do just that...cut out a scrap in that general shape and probably hand stitch it on. if you look closely at the second tall strip, it seems to maybe have a few hand stitches in it.

Hello! I found this forum a few days ago, but I don't think I'll ever get through all the posts! I've seen some of you around the POTC Costuming Yahoo Group and Livejournal. :) There are lots of great costumes here!

A short intro: I've been studying 18th century fashion since I first attempted to make POTC costumes for myself and my husband for Halloween '05. I'm a huge fan of POTC, obviously. Here is the latest incarnation of DH's costume: http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000fp28c

It's in varying stages of accuracy and completion. I've been working on the coat for ages, as I've put off hemming it. I'm almost finished, though - 264 inches of hem later! I'm proud to say that we've made or scavenged each part ourselves. I'll spare you all the details of the trials and tribulations about every piece, though. ;)

I do believe that his inner lining is most likely hemmed on the inside for strength (as in the movie costume) but there is a decorative detail hem along the edge. This was something that was pointed out awhile back on one of SithCamaro.com eBay sales.

There are a total of 45 buttons on CJS frock coat. There are seven in the back that go on both sides of the split, five on each sleeve bucket, five on each pocket, one above each split on the left and right, and nine that go up the front.

oh boy! you kids are on late! i was waiting all day for this thread to start moving again. hahaa!

thanks so much wediznutt! i thought it might be that way...the same way the cuffs are done as well, correct? i did those tonight and though i dont have the motivation to HAND STITCH a decorative hem, i just used black thread so its still noticeable and nifty looking on the beige sides.

in other news...i broke two machine needles tonight! D: something is up with my bobbin case and it keeps snapping them. wtfwtf?

and here's a pic of the back of my jack coat so far ( the bottom split godet IS beige, it just falls perfectly here ... though i didnt notice the back pattern by simplicity is very different than the actual coat :( ...still looks alright though. ) and barbossas with a frilly shirt beside it. its a low quality pic but you can see the size of the hat and the general look of the thing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/aubzy000/coats.jpg

and heres a higher quality pic of the barbossa coat so you can see the purdy materials i chose for it ( mind you, this was still when it was incomplete :) )

This ladies and gentlemen, is what I look like when I don't have a mirror to apply my JS makeup (and costume in general) with. lol! I didn't know what I looked like until I saw that picture... yeech! lol Not one of my better days eh?

As I said in person, your Tia Dalma costume is a sight to behold... really good! Your dad makes a fine Captain, can't wait to see how that progresses. :)

Speaking of progress, I'm weathering up my costume... aye... I'm gonna give it that CJS... rough dirty seaworthy rum soaked pirate look!

i'll take this opportunity to remind you that even with your "bad makeup job" you still managed to win the costume contest!!

And thanks! ;)

and heres a higher quality pic of the barbossa coat so you can see the purdy materials i chose for it ( mind you, this was still when it was incomplete :) )

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/aubzy000/barbie.jpg

the yellow im using for his sash is also the material for my Giselle dress which I havent made a speck of progress on yet, and wont until Jack is complete. :D

Love the Barbossa frock coat. His costume is so much more complex than any of the others. Where did you get those buttons? They are spot on!

oh boy! you kids are on late! i was waiting all day for this thread to start moving again. hahaa!

thanks so much wediznutt! i thought it might be that way...the same way the cuffs are done as well, correct? i did those tonight and though i dont have the motivation to HAND STITCH a decorative hem, i just used black thread so its still noticeable and nifty looking on the beige sides.

in other news...i broke two machine needles tonight!

Does Fabricland do special orders via telephone or mail? I have been looking for some CJS buttons and can only find them online for WAY too much money. $1.00 each for 1 inch real brass buttons.

http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?cPath=18&products_id=315

Do you have a SKU number so that I can try and order some? How about a picture? I checked fabricland.com but they are only an online store locator and sewing tips. Sucks to be in the states when Canada has the better stores....all we have is Michaels and JoAnns and they don't have much!!!

Sorry...soooooooooo many questions...sooooooooo little time!

theyre actually plastic, the ones i got. but they were only 1.50 for two. :)
i got different ones for my cjs costume, actually. those 1inch half sphere looking ones. im not sure if jacks are supposed to be the same as barbossas or what, but ive seen both used and i like these ones...they seem more...piratey. i wouldnt want to have all the same ones anyways, id like each coat to be unique. =3

they dont do special orders or online orders. i was in there today and i think i was talking to the DUMBEST lady in the universe and she most likely threw out my name and number as soon as i left.

when i bought all of those buttons out from the store they said theyd replenish within a week. its been almost 2 months and they still havent.

BUT

now that im talking about it, they have the same ones at walmart. again , theyre plastic molded, but they look brass. the centre is actually kinda denty and melty and aged looking. ill take a picture to better show you later, again though, theyre dirt cheap and still look good! :)

edit: ah, here we go.
this is a better idea what they look like.
mind you , they were 1.60/2 CDN at walmart.

Like my mom told me (not that was dissapointed or anything, i had no idea there would be a contest) It doesnt matter what costume contest Im in, even a decent Capt. Jack would win over most any other costume. Hes just that popular.

I was happy for you. And enjoyed your mannerisms throughout the film. :)

Captain Jack Sparrow tooth:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/POTC-AWE/pirates57.jpg

Researching the shape and possible storyline I concluded that it may be an alligator tooth. Alligator teeth was a very common item used in voodoo rituals so perhaps another gift from Tia Dalma?

My version of the alligator tooth.

I was perusing on Craigs List and it came up, I sent them a random email, explaining I'd worked in offices and managed offices and a few boutiques, and that my work history wasnt costuming, but that id done it on the side for years. Really didnt expect to hear anything back.

So then I got an email back, asking for my resume and some pictures of costumes ive done (and artwork, etc), so I did as they asked and was immediatly emailed back to interview. he said he was impressed by my artwork and I obviously had good depth perception and good color coordination.

It might be Thursday, so dont fret if i dont have an update tomorrow, I will update and let you know how it goes.

Like i said, im not sure if im qualified, ive done lots of costuming, and I have good management skills, and im creative and artistic, but ive never gone for a job like this, i KNOW im good with computers and its just basic pushing papers (what i do now) this is heavy skill related, and while im up for the challenge, i hope Im given the opportunity to excel, cuz i know i can.

Thanks for all the well-wishing! I appreciate it!!!!

and back on topic.................

are Jack Sparrow coats supposed to weigh 5.5 lbs before they even have sleeves or any decor?! D:

haha. i'm working on the 10,000 ft hem around the lining and its EXTREMELY heavy now at the bottom with all the ripples and godets and whatnot. :| but it falls perfectly and sways just like jacks so i'm assuming his was pretty heavy too. hrm.

i think im all sewed out for tonight.

and wow, what a gift from a parent. a shrunken head! lol!

im curious about the tooth too. it would be nifty if it were a kraken tooth but it seems to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too small...maybe a baby kraken tooth. :D nice job on it though!

Yes, yes back on Topic.

I received my Tia Dalma necklace all the way from Hong Kong yesterday and its a beauty, though I will need a longer chain for it. Off to buy beads for that....

And im such a tard, because I went to Joannes looking for fabric for Elizabeths vest and was dissapointed to not find any. So I went back the other day in search of buttons, only to realize the ENTIRE back wall was full of clearance fabric and home decor fabric, and they had the perfect stuff! how lame!

Also, Ive been interjected to create renaissance costumes for the girls I teach flute lessons to, so Ive got to bust those out this week, in addition to working on what im working on. Oi.

And PS - I haaaaaaaaate the cuffs on jacks coat. Ive messed them up idk how many times trying to get it right.

Marty: It's a key....!"

Captain Jack Sparrow: No! Much better! It is a drawring of a key! Gentleman...what do keys do?

Leech: Keys unlock.........tings?

Gibbs: And whatever this key unlocks, inside there's something valuable. So, we're setting out to find whatever this key unlocks!

Jack Sparrow: No! If we don't have the key, we can't open whatever it is we don't have that it unlocks. So what purpose would be served in finding whatever need be unlocked, which we don't have, without first having found the key what unlocks it?

Gibbs: So - We're going after this key!

Jack Sparrow: You're not making any sense at all. Any more questions?

Anyway...I used some scraps of muslin material I had leftover, cut it to the approximate shape of the movie prop, and roughened up the edges with a file for a tattered look.

I used a permanent ink pen and drew the key and the hash marks. Keep in mind my key picture is not identical to the movie prop but I like mine better. After the ink dried I used course sandpaper and roughened up the key and hash mark images. This blended in the ink into the material and gave it a faded look.

Next I used...believe it or not....dark and tan leather stain for the darkening of the material. The technique I used is called "dark on light" staining in the leather crafting world. You put down a coat of light stain and than dab the dark stain on top. (This will be the same technique I will use for my tricorn hat!) BUT...this is fabric and leather stains don't look so hot on fabric! So just for kicks and giggles I used the old techinque of tea staining. After an hour in some Earl Grey tea (all I had) the outcome was AWEsome!!! The tea lightened the areas of the dark stain and darkened the light areas of the fabric. It all blended in nicely. I must say I am very happy with the results!

questions questions...can anyone take pictures of and/or draw in paint how they sewed the back buttons and 'button holes' on?

the way the material falls, the gray overlaps itself...should i sew through both of these so the fall in place where they should? or just through the gray? or through the gray and the lining? hrmm.... the front ones im doing through the lining since if they were functional buttons ( which im not making them ), this is how it would be anyways and probably how jacks is.

also.....any suggested lengths for the braided 'buttonholes'?

and...oh!

anyone know where to get a good leather Jack style hat? there are nice replicas on ebay but some are ENORMOUS when shown on a person or from the profile...and im still not sure the nicer ones are even $250-worth-nice... :S

and a little off topic...is sith-world on ebay run by sith-camaro? anyone know?

Yeah, I noticed that her hair is really long. I just have to buy a very long wig and dread the whole thing. Also, you know those Jamaican cap/wig with the dreads attached to the cap? I might buy a bunch of them to add because I like the way their dreads look.
Another thing: if you know anyone that knows how the make sweaters, mittens, and such, they could probably make the shaw no problem. My mother would be making mine.

I went to the ren fair again for the pirate weekend. I expected that there would be a tons of Jack look-a-likes because they had a contest for that. There was hardly any anywhere and the ones that competed didn't look to well.

haven't been on my compy in a while. Sori! Man, how can you have a ren faire w/o Jack! Sori there weren't any good Jacks there.

For the dreads, Yeah also if you can try to get some hair that's a brown color as well. What exactly do the dreads on the caps look like? I've never actually bought a cap or a predreaded wig. Also from looking at her dread in tha last pic I'm gonna have to make her dreads thicker. I'm also trying to find or alter the feather that I have in the wig for her hair. Tia's feathers are like sleek and curl with a little orangy tint on the ends. I think I found some good synthetic braid hair for a cheaper price and I'm gonna use that. In all honestly, after looking at the pic again really any synthetic bulk hair will do, and I think it'll be better to use the cheaper one. It'll be easier to dreadlock.
Here's what synthetic bulk hair looks like:

ttp://www.bellabeautysupply.net/1493152.html

This is what I use:
http://www.extremebeautysupply.com/servlet/the-268/kanekalon-braid-hair-%231B-fdsh-350/Detail

Not that exact brand but I use the one made of 100% kanekalon. It looks to be more expnsive on line, but If you go to an ethnic hair shop some of them sell it for like a $1.50. There a wide rage of color to. For tia's dread you might need about 2 or 3 packs.

I still might experiment with the more expensive brand but I think the kanekalon with do.

Make sure you get hair wax too!

Using Amaco Rub N Buff I was able to achieve a nice patina look on my upper belt buckle and my new DMC/AWE baldric buckle. This stuff has to be applied in layers and very carefully because it dries very fast. It is permanent once it dries and does not rub off like acrylic paint and it doesn't require sealing.

The antique gold looks as if it all has been rubbed off except the bumpy areas. The patina vertigree was applied with a Q-tip in order to get down into the cracks and crevices!

Sir, I was wondering if you have any experience weathering or aging vinyl leather?? if it is even possible?? It be a mite cheaper than the real stuff right now...budget...(you know... that awful word for a costumer) isn't allowing for real leather at the moment....

Wediznutt
03-30-2007, 12:09 PM
Yes GG I know that word "sir" is an awful word!!!

I have never weathered vinyl leather but I would figure the techniques would be similar to weathering material fabric. Since vinyl is not very poreous I would think you would need to use paint (enamel based so you won't have to seal the item). Sandpaper is an excellent tool to give any material a weathered and worn look. Plus when you use the sandpaper you will break through the surface of the vinyl plastic coating and get down to whatever material is below it. You could possibly use dark colored Rit Dye to dye the material below the vinyl plastic coating?

I am just thinking...typing out loud here. I have not tried these techniques yet but now you got me thinking about putting together Will Turners frock coat or redoing my COTBP baldric with black vinyl leather...Hmm!

Well after four WalMart stores I have given up on the quest for the faux brass buttons. I decided to just suck it up and buy real brass buttons from Jas Townsend. They are made of real brass and are about 1 inch diameter. They will need to be aged once I get them. $1.00 per button.

http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?cPath=18&products_id=315&osCsid=e5f57b9b01123745b77652cb81aaf3e1

I have decided that in the shortness of time I am going to modify my existing frock coat and add my new buttons and some sort of thread braiding...preferably iron on type. The close up of CJS bucket on the sleeve is a good image of the button hole threading. Anyone know of any type of iron braiding that could be used? WalMart didn't have any and neither did JoAnns.

though it still doesnt answer my question...and i doubt i will have it answered unless i find a picture or contact who has touched and spread out the back of his coat. ><

to keep the godet? or to separate theback split?
that is the question...

I guess if I had a better understanding of the "godet". I know what it means but I am not too sure what your looking for. Perhaps you should contact Toby Markham aka sithcamaro.com. He is really good about helping people with these type of very detailed questions especially when it comes to Captain Jack Sparrow pieces. Nice guy! You should email him!

Hey folks! Researching some sort of iron on thread braid I came across this stuff. What do you think? Not having a sewing machine I thought this would be great to make simulated button holes and sew the buttons on the end.

There are over 37 different colors. Opinions? Recommendations?

i emailed him a long time ago...no reply. :(

i know there are two godets on either side of the center split up the back...what im wondering is if there is one in between the 2 lines of buttons or whether its cut straight up so that its just a slit up the back.

if the back were spread out would it look like... a or b?

I'm going to say, technically neither. Coats of this period should really have three splits - at the side seams (for the sword, if the baldric's worn underneath the coat) and the center back seam (for riding a horse). Here's a pic of DH's coat, which I made using a period pattern from Norah Waugh's The Cut of Men's Clothes: 1600 to 1900. Obviously, I didn't have enough buttons to continue them down the center back split. :(

http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000fsqx2

However, the first coat I made I used the Simplicity pattern, and I just eliminated the center godet, plus changed the cuffs, etc. I also made it out of horrible stiff canvas, so I didn't even line it, lol!

Since it's designed for paper crafts, I wonder if the iron-on adhesive is strong enough for wear?

I used 1/8" cotton twill tape, which I dyed and just sewed on with rough stitches.

Oh hey...more Asian Pirate Liz info....or rather "observations"....people are thinking the designs (passamentrie) on her coat are "couching", sewing a soutache braid or cord onto the fabric in patterns, which would have been done in the time, however, as I was staring at a few of the pictures I noticed something interesting....there wold be a raised pattern right? well no...its actually embroidered on....anybody have a programmable embroidery machine I can borrow?? lol....I'm going to fake it or try anyways by using fabric paint...yeah it can look crappy but there are ways around it.....

if I repeated myself please please forgive me...:bigcry:

THANK YOU!

thats exactly what i wanted to hear.

but im picky. and im really just making this difficult for myself. i realized theres one VERY brief moment in COTBP where jack walks on the dock at his entrance and you can very clearly see beige in between the back split. im just not sure how the gray sits on top of it or if its a godet attached to the gray attached on the side seams like in the 'b' picture i drew. it looks as if the gray's a seperate layer previous to the dock scene...

HRM. ( see attachment for more details )

also, just curious..has anyone else noticed how progressively more dread-ier jacks hair got throughout the series?

in cotbp he has a few dreads but its mainly just shaggy hair...its alllmost all dreads in dmc and from what ive seen of AWE it looks completely dreaded. ... dirty pirate. :D

I think it's just one side of the split flipped over so you can see the backside/lining. My coat has fullness at the center back that causes them to overlap, so I can see how it could swing like that.

http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000ftw67

I know what you mean about the dreads! It's frustrating to try to re-create a look that keeps changing!

Wediznutt

Want to keep the same COTBP dread look but be able to continue on to the second and third movie? Sew your new dreads into your bandana. That way you can wear our older wig with fewer dreads and later put on our "dreadlock laced bandana" for AWE!

Problem is that you will need two bandanas to accomplish this idea.

I found cotton twill tape at Wal-mart once, but it was 1/2 or 3/4" width. For the specialty width, you'll probably have to order it online from a sutler like Wm. Booth Draper. I bought mine from a sutler at the Vincennes Rendezvous (Rev. War reenactment). :)

I was trying to explain to him that what we were doing IS cosplaying. But he doesnt really get it. He just wants to be Jack...

Now that his costume is finished (clothes wise) I can get started on my moms (pirate liz) and my brothers (will)

And then we're going to take the town by storm... lol

I should point out that I think where they live is awesome. They live in Bradenton, FL where one of the main roads is Cortez Road. And the beach we were on is Anna Maria Island.

And coming up is the Hernando Desoto Pirate Parade. Still pulling some strings to get us into that..

through many stages of progression, the back of my Jack's coat is almost complete. i have to figure out a way to shorten the pockets without completely taking them off cause theyre too big....and though the godets are in the wrong spot i think it still achieves the pirate flowyness just beautifully! :D put two buttons on just to get a feel for the look of them, too. as you can see, i first did the braiding in a more decorative colonial style but my Captain requested to have them closer together. i dreaded the work but took his word and i LOVE the outcome! he's such a good friend, but a better Captain, there is none.

so far so good!!

question though, not thinking, i sewed the braiding on backwards on the back...that is, the buttons will cover the tidy end and the other end is a bit frayed, how can i clean this up?

As JustAWench suggested I should use the twill tape as faux button holes on the frock coat: sleeve buckets, pocket flaps, godets (I now know what that means!!!), and front. I ended up with 1/4 inch twill tape. I am trying to figure out how to sew it onto the coat in those areas. Also how to fold them to form a faux button hole....

I don't own a sewing machine although I think JoAnns allows you to rent them? I could be wrong though.

Ok...I got it now...what I did was go back to Justawench's post and looked at her picture of her coat...now remember she said in her post that she just used "rough" stitches...here's her pic again...

http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000fsqx2

If you look very closely at her pic, because she had 1/8th twill tape (another brilliant and easier idea than that stupid braid gah!), all she did was form it to look like a button hole and then sewed the button at the end to cover the "trick"....

I don't know if JoAnn Fabric stores rents sewing machines (don't be afraid to call and ask though) but all you'd have to do is fold the twill tape in half to form 1/8 and then hand stitch it on...see as anal as I am I would hand stitch the edges of the twill together, then iron it flat with the "seam" on the back side then sew on...but I make everything harder than it should be I've been told...

however if anyone has a much easier trick for Wediznutts twill tape please answer!

oh did you figure out the dye situation too?? you could always tea dye it perhaps??

We also got interviewed by Buena Vista films. Rumor be that we may end up on the AWE DVD Extras regarding the aforementioned said piratical event...we can only hope! It may be cut since I yelled out "Will Turner" when they asked who our favorite character was/is! I figured that since Orlando Bloom asked, "Are there any Will Turners out there? I just used a small running stitch, and I wasn't very careful about it because I figured no one would get close enough to see. Since my tape was cotton, I just used some Rit dye, I think. I should have made them darker; they look too clean.

Well since I joined CosPlay I have been talking about making my leather tricorn hat and that day has begun. Three tries later and three pieces of leather later I have started a successful path to a good tricorn!:)

I am using two pieces of 2 ounce leather scraps that I got from a local Tandy Leather store. They were on sale for about $18.00 each. Generally the 2 ounce leather full hides go for about $3.99 per square foot and they make you buy the entire hide so go for the scraps. Be sure to inspect the scraps for flaws or holes! Don't get those for obvious reasons. The piece I got for the brim actually had stretch marks on it and this will contribute to the weathered look once it is stained.

Here are the preliminary photos.

The brim piece. I used the How To Make A CJS Guide from the Internet but have found a few flaws in the instructions. Note that I added the V cuts into the headband of the brim piece. The How To Guide says to just stretch the piece over a bowl after dipping it into hot water....for me this spelled disaster. The V cuts makes stretching it over a bowl much easier and when I was doing screengrabs from DMC DVD Extras I noticed similar cuts in the rubber version of the tricorn.

The endless hand stitching since I do not own a heavy duty leather sewing machine! Em are expensive!

Although all these shots look the same you are actually looking at all three sides of the tricorn now that it has been dunked in hot water and shaped. The clips help shape the cockades. The bowl helps to maintain the shape of the browband. It is also the bowl that I will use to shape the leather bowl for the hat. Nice thing is that the bowl is exactly 26 inch around which I need my hat to be to get it over the bandana and wig (way too many dreads!) Check your local Target kitchen section for nesting stainless steel bowls because they can be used to shape the leather bowl.

Four hours later (and 3:00am last night) a somewhat dry leather tricorn brim that holds the shape. It is so cool to see this thing actually take shape. After I make and attach the leather bowl piece I will fine tune the shaping of the brim, tie up the brim to the bowl, and weather stain!

That hat is looking mighty fine, there! :) I appreciate the in-progress photos too. I may have to commandeer some of your techniques for my own tricorn. ;D

Well now that the brim is done it was onto the leather bowl tonight. I did a trial run before dipping the leather in hot water in order to make sure I get it right the first time. No other leather in hand so I only have one shot!

Dry run!

Nesting bowls. The leather will go in between the bowls when wet. Top bowl makes for a good shape on the opposite side of the leather bowl.

Nesting bowls with dry leather in between to test size of the leather piece. It will require have the edges trimmed in order to really push the wet leather into the bowls shape.

The leather is dipped in HOT water...not boiling water because that will destroy the leather. It will burn the leather and when it dries it will be crusty and crumbly like toast. I drenched the leather under the hot water and quickly placed the leather over the shaping bowl. The leather is nice and rubbery so you have alot of time to work and shape. I placed the top bowl on the wet leather and trimmed away the excess.

Here is the bowl by itself after it has been shaped and the excess leather is removed. Note that the leather will bunch up and there is no way to get around this because you are taking a flat piece of leather and turning it into a 3D shape. Smooth out the edges and get all the bunching in one area. This bunched up area can be at the back or front of the tricorn brim. The cockades will hide the bunching on the bowl.

I think this looks like Blinky from PacMan....you younguns may not remember this video game! Maybe I should say it looks like My Little Totoro?

Testing out the look. I put the shaped brim on top of the still wet bowl to see how it would look. The bowl will still need to be trimmed up around the edges to ensure the browband on the brim will fit into the bowl.

Now I have to sit and wait for the bowl to dry but no more 3:00am anymore! Must sleep!:snoring: Running out of time for a Saturday morning 11:00am photoshoot!

Exsiquite work on your dad's jack. I wish my family would be cool lke that. My bro is the only 1 who will let me make him costumes (Star wars ones). I'm trying to conveince him to let me make him into Barbosa's Bo'sun, but he doesn't really want to shave his head bald, So we're probably going to have to find something else.

For those that cant sew very well (like myself), try www.speedystitches.com (they're also on EBay). I just bought a Jedi/Sith cloak from her and I can't express enough how good the quality is on it. She also just released some Pirates of the Carribean costume stuffs as well.

PL4ME - Tandy leather store scrap pile. About $20.00 each for 2 ounce piece. I spend alot of time looking through about 40 pieces to find the right look.

Or you can shop where pirates shop (and voodoo queens)...eBay
