:snoring: so far so good.......( i think ? )
opinions? tips? pointers?

just a note that it's not actually as uneven as it looks ( i admit, its about an inch off due to some complications that arose... ) but its just very lopsided on the hanger in that pic. :D haa!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/aubzy000/Image015.jpg

Ah yes but when those complications arose were they ensued, overcome? Savvy?

It looks like you need to take dilute bleach to the fabric. Yes I hated the thought to when I destroyed my waistcoat but I made an excellent comeback. I used a dilute bleach solution and a sponge and lightly tapped my way around the fabric to lighten the color....this was of course after I ended up doing the same thing with blue Rit Dye to fix the previous errors.

Looking good! I wish I had one of those! <sigh>

Scurries off to glue tricorn hat together and contemplate staining in the dark!

oh they definately were ensued and overcome after much frustration.

it is definately a darker gray, almost a faded black even, but pretty close to jacks when it's looking its darkest ( as his coat tends to change colours in various lights ) so it gets the job done.

i'm WAY too scared to do anything with bleach ( i've got enough of that in my hair hahahah! prepping for giselle..xD ) but my dear Captain that will be wearing it plans to leave it out in the sun, wind and rain for a while. We might take a couple trips to the beach where i will beat the crap out of the coat with him in it, even...hence why i rushed to get it done. he wants it genuinely weathered by...well...weather. so we'll see what it looks like by the end of may. there's snow here in Ontario right now. >_<

as for the buttons, well...i have 20 more to stick on where i want ( actually i think im down to about 12, i've been going at it on and off throughout the night and my board lurking ) but yeah, i have to wait for the rest. SO MANY FRIGGN' BUTTONS! X_x

and again, does anyone know how to tidy up the ends of stitched on braiding? :( the end i curved looks nice, of course, but the rough ends keep looking fray-ey. i stitched and backstitched over them a couple times but i'd still like them to look neater...any suggestions?

ok. not pirate related, but we're all friends, so im sharing.

Here is the dress I just finished for one of my flute students, Kacy. She was THRILLED with it. They were having a renaissance festival at school, and she needed a costume, im anxiously waiting to hear if she wins the costume contest!!

I have the same issue with the braid ends Limeyaku....first get a scrap of the braid and burn one of the ends...how does that work? if not then you can always use a fabric glue that dries clear (local craft store) and manipulate the ends to look cleaner....the buttons will also be on that end as well so just stitch them good and tight at that end to cover it up...

stefunierocks: very lovely! be careful though, stay on topic *heehee*...the moderators are on lurk mode! ;)

Leather tricorn phase three!

Trimming up the bowl so it is read for gluing. It reminds me of making German apple pastries! Now I am hungry!

It was a wee bit difficult trying tocut the straight line around the bunched area. I left the leather in this area bunched up because I didn't want to make further cuts into the bowl in order to try and smooth that area out.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/01Trimming.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/02Lookslikepastry.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/03Trimmed.jpg

The parts and the Tandy Leather Glue. After I got a smell of the glue it turns out it is just the old fashioned Elmers glue before they removed the odor...I guess too many kids sniffing glue!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/04Thepieces.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/05Theglue.jpg

Applying the glue to both parts: bowl and brim...in not so generous portions. I want to make sure these parts stick. Apply the two parts together when the glue starts getting tacky. You can help it along by spreading the glue out with your finger but be sure you clean up before you get more glue all over your leather.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/06Applyingglue.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/07Applyingglue.jpg

Parts drying for about two hours before you can really handle the tricorn for the final dipping and shaping. By the way don't put it on your head when the glue is still wet!!!

Drying. Be sure to wipe up excess glue although this stuff does dry clear but staining will be a problem where the glue has seeped out of seams and dried.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/08Drying.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Tricorn/Phase%203/09Dryingcloseup.jpg

Dried and reshaped. I took these on Friday morning after the leather dried out all night after I reshaped the cockades and rolled the back. I wasn't too pleased by the way the bowl and the brim meet on the top of the tricorn. It is a little messy and the leather doesn't quite line up too well. I will fix that after the photoshoot.

lol! thats what we get for trying to be more accurrate, hmm? i can try the burning thing but...they're already attached to the coat so i dont think it will go over very well LOL

the buttons only cover the frayed ends of the ones on the cuffs, i didnt want the curvy ends pointing inwards up the backsplit but forgot the frays wouldnt be hidden by the buttons that way. >_< though im sure noone is going to be getting that close to the back and bottom of his coat or they may be in for a strumpet slap. :angel2:

i'm down to 10 buttons left before i go on the hunt for more! more updated pics later on in the day perhaps :) via digicam instead of cellphone too!

It's nice to see that after all troubles with making ye' tricorn this time it's working out! It's looking good, once it's all weathered and stain and such I'm sure it'll look awesome!

Sorta makes me want to try this out... though I have no experience with working with leather so I don't know how good an idea that is. hehe. I may just have to pester you for newbie advice when you're finished. :P

Good stuff though everybody, everything in this topic is always great!

Honestly Neon it really is turning out to be not that difficult. It is more time consuming than difficult. The tips and tricks I got from Scurvy Dog over at KTTC was extremely helpful.

The leather is about the only thing that can get expensive but if you shop locally at Tandy Leathe store you can find scrap 2 ounce leather for under $20.00 each. You only need two pieces.

I don't know how close this is to you in FL but worth checking out.

well, to clean up my frays on the braiding i ended up trimming them as straight as i could, and believe it or not, i pressed them with my flat-iron ( the kind for hair ! lol ... it was closer than the real iron ... >_> ) and it worked wonderfully. i touched them up in the girliest way and put some clear nailpolish on the ends to harden them so they dont split anymore just like us girls do on nylon runs ....

annnnd...yep.

still havent sewn those buttons on.

and considering re-doing the cuffs...hrm...

When I was reading this thread @ KTTC I came the possible Pirates 4 artile. I've heard about this before, and frankly I don't think It's a good idea. One of the main reasons is because there are rumors that if there is goign to be a pirates four they're going to Write Will out of it. I can't stand that! They say it's to cut cost. WTC!? It's Disney they don't need to cut costs they get like a million dollars a day! And pirates in it's self is probably the biggest disney francaise. frankly I don't think any good will come of a pirates 4 if this is the way it's to be done. What do y'all think?

Welcome to Cosplay.com....Undead Monkey here...!

Yes it is very strange that ACME disappeared. His store was open this morning. I get periodic update emails from eBay which I listed his store. I did a search for his products thinking maybe he renamed his store but no hits! I wonder if he is getting out of the CJS business! I was hoping to get some rings from him...

Hmm...Well it'll be kinda hard to dye since I'm assuming it's some sythetic material and not human hair. You could try bleaching it, possible even which house hold bleach, but sometimes that's not always the best route. Also you can add dreads to it. That's what I did for mine. After I dreaded the wig itself which was black I made some more dreads with a liter brown color of sythethic braid hair.
As far as the wig cap goes have you tried folding your hair and cliping it down and then putting it into a wig cap, or braiding it up like in french braids on the sides?

Tell me im not losing my mind.

Take a look at US Poster of Jack for AWE. (you can dl it off the pirates site, under gallery, or it could be your current desktop, lik it is mine...)

Take at look at Jack's dangle, on the left side of his head, our right side, if your looking at him.

There are 2. One if flying into the air. One is laying in his dreads.

Upon seeing this, I quickly looked at every picture, trailer and behind the scenes photo from AWE that ive had access to, and he only has one.

Have I discovered a MAJOR photoshop mistake? Or does he indeed have two dangles. He has 1 in every other picture.

Here is the pic if you dont have it - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/greenyskp/poster_final.jpg

PL4ME - Is it a synthetic hair wig? If so take a steamer to it and shrink them strands down. I did this with my wig (after I gave it a haircut) and it worked out great. Be sure not to apply TOO much steam or you will end up with a flat, matted wig.

Some of the other inexpesive wigs that are not Kanekalon but the hair strands look like fishing line can be shrunk but not by much. I would still give it a haircut if you can. I used a layering cut technique and just did about a 1/2 inch at a time so that I didn't loose too much hair!

Post pics so we can see!

Holy smaholigans! YOU are right! Two dangles! Great now I have to go out and buy another long dangle strand!!!

At least it is a photo editing problem and not a bead placement problem. Remember the backwards beads from the jail scene in COTBP? The square bead was higher up on the dangle and the flowery silver bead was down lower?

Hmmmmm! Talk about a major mess up....or is it?

I will try that steeming thing, but my hair is to thick to fit it all underneath the cap. I might sort of dread my hair to go with the wig. But then again I need to at least dye it dark brown.

[QUOTE=piratelife4me;1829241]Okay I took some pics of the wig on me.[QUOTE]

You could always chop off your real hair!:bigtu:

Is it Kanekalon material in the wig? There looks like alot of dreads on the wig. I know you don't want to hear this but is there anyway you could thin out the wig by removing some of the dreads from the side and a few from the top? If I remember you said you were going to work in some of the other dreadlocks you have into the wig which are thicker?

You could always use a hair net under your wig. I use one under mine even though I have short hair because the wig is so heavy it tends to move around. The hair net holds in place very well.

Is there any way you could work your hair into the wig by pulling it through the hair weaves? Might be complicated and require more time in getting ready. Don't answer this one.

I went back and looked at some pics to Tia on www.costumersguide.com. It looks like you could do some major random shortening of dreads to give your wig more of a "natty dread" look. If you look at Tia's pics you will see that she has a bit of hair (like a mini afro) with all of her dreads more thinly spread around. Definitely do some cutting on your wig! You cold probably resell those dreads as Captain Jack Sparrow dreads....HA HA HA!

Thank you Wediznutt.
I found the site where I bought it from and it had a paragraph on the care of the wig.

Cap is set to Average when you receive it however you are able to adjust from petite to large capsizes with adjustable tabs inside the cap. Wig is able to be styled with products such as mousse, hairspray and much more without harming. Teasing and brushing of the hair will not harm the wig but on longer styles please remember to start at the ends and work your way to the top to prevent breaking or pulling of the hair. For washing we recommend a gentle shampoo such as the Paul Mitchell line. Cutting the costume hair is completely safe for all synthetic styles we recommend using razor scissors to give a more natural cut. Color spraying is also safe to use on costume wigs.

The thing that sucks is that the price is higher and they have brown. When I ordered it, they only had black.

Wediznutt

PL4ME - You can still make it work for you. My wig was off black 1B color and I simply sewed in brown dreads and trimmed away considerable amount of the black hair.

I think if you were to work in some brown, brown/black, and a few black dreads using Sassy's Kanekalon synthetic hair the brown will offset the black and you won't need to dye anything.

Just an example of my wig. See how the brown really does stand out.

Hmmmmm! Talk about a major mess up....or is it?

i have the pic as backgorund and noticed it before... i think its a photoshop thing... two pictures blended, cause its the exact same dangle and obviously arranged in the same place^^

and i mentioned the difference of the beads a few pages before^^

Thank you:)

Both belts are 2 1/2 inches wide and long. Both of mine are about 54-58 inches long so you can achieve the infamous belt loop.

I really like this wig:
http://www.topnotchcostumes.com/piratewig.html
But it has so many dreads,
and I noticed in BP that Jack has more hair then dreads, but then in DMC, where Johnny's wig changes quite a bit, there is more dreads but there is still hair...
So I'm looking for a compromise. I was thinking maybe getting a synthetic wig and adding dreads in it and then teasing the heck out of it to make it look rather weathered, but I don't know exactly how to do that.

Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Isn't it great when you get one item done and then you start the check list for EVERYTHING else?? lol....lookin' good though don't give up...

well I got the coat started just waiting for the iron to warm up here so I can do some pressing...now that that is finished I'm going to bore ya'll with what I'm doin':

ok the coat is somewhat put together, in the rough first stages, I'm already seeing some things to fix:
http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/begliz.JPG
http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/begliz2.JPG

if you're thinking "dang that looks huge!" you're right it is :) can't be completely helped I'm a pear shape and I'm 5'11" but I am losing weight...

I plan on taking 5/8" in on the back seam, then maybe 2" on each "side insert"...I've been studying and studying the pictures out there:
http://www.costumersguide.com/potc3/brocade10.jpg
http://www.costumersguide.com/potc3/brocade9.jpg
and have come to the conclusion it is a side insert, clever, for as thin as Keira is she's still hippy and this would accomodate hippiness without adding too much overall...(I'm hippy too!so no I'm not "bashing")...the shoulders are slightly dropped in the pattern I'm using so I'm going to have to fix that as well...oh and add the "slits" to the panels and the sleeves which are also going through a bit of alteration as well...

then I have to measure the garment throughout for all the trims: rat tail/cord, gimp, braid..and my goodness there is a lot of it too its all along the seams doubled (3rd pic in):

http://www.usatoday.com/life/gallery/l070316-pirates/flash.htm

and as for the embroidery?? well I'm going to paint the design on using Lumiere fabric paint...cheaper than going to an embroidery business, less hassle than doing the embroidery myself and somewhat cheaper to boot ($18 for an 8oz jar, which covers 24sq feet, and shipping and tax) the only "hard" part is drawing out the design seen on the front and sides and back (only bits and pieces so far), oh and matching the trim and paint seeing as there are so many different shades of gold and even then there isn't consistency *ugh*

the armor patterning is coming along...I'll save that for another day though...I'll take pics as I go along and try to be helpful for other fellow APEZ cosplayers...

good night!

I had that wig before,
the dreads WILL fall apart, as they are not really dreads, just a bunch of synthetic hair twisted together to give it some volume. my dangles are always getting caught in the dreads. Definately would not go for that again.

Well my feathers have arrived today but I haven't had time to take any pics so I used these pictures. What do you think? Close match?

I initially was planning on purchasing about 5 ostrich feather dusters and joining them together until I found these beauties for sale on the ole Internet!

What I will be making...the cannibal scepter!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Cannibal%20Jack/Sceptercrop.jpg

The feathers. They are all rooster feathers with the exception of about 25 ring tailed pheasent feathers that I will be adding later.

Black feathers:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Cannibal%20Jack/Schlappendyedjetblack.jpg

Multicolored feathers that go in between the black feathers:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Cannibal%20Jack/Feathertrimbiasvarigated.jpg

Multicolored feathers at the bottem of the scepter. They vary in length so the longer ones will be added first and the shorter ones at the end.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Cannibal%20Jack/Schlappennaturalvarigated.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Cannibal%20Jack/Schlappennaturalcreamandginger.jpg

Now if I could only find a small to medium sized animal skull to go on the bottem of the feathers. I may need to go to the park and find a dead squirrel!!!

The teeth molds were $30.00. You need two for top and bottom molds.

Each tooth was $30.00 because gold is fairly low by the ounce.

Total of about $210.00 plus shipping.

Cheapest I have found out there on the Internet.

White sheet (shredded), red sharpie, and tea to stain the fabric with to make it look dirty... or that's what we did for the Jack costumes we sold at the store. We didn't have any luck finding the same pattern either, so we emulated as best as we could.

For an inexpensive route you could go to an Ikea store and pick up a particular curtain that is very similar to the sash. The curtains are $29.00 for a set of two. It would require you to do some cutting, joining pieces together and weathering.

Or you could do the eBay route (eBay where pirates shop). Several different people are selling true identical sashes while others are selling what they call are true sashes but are the Ikea.

Update: The curtain you are looking for is called Alvina Smal.

CJS true sash has four small red strips while the Ikea curtain has three.

Do you sew at all? If not, you may want to learn. It's way cheaper to make the clothing than to try to buy it. Also, you don't need every single piece to make Capt. Jack. My husband started with just the shirt, waistcoat, sash, belt and wig.

I'm embarassed to say, but his first waistcoat was a thrift store suit coat (100% polyester) with the sleeves and collar removed. :P Three dollars and a bit of sewing was all that took. The shirt is the only piece that has survived from the first incarnation!

don't be embarressed!!! that is how i did my little sister's costume it is very in exspensive and time consuming some times!!!

Reine:

You have some of your costume done already right? What parts do you still need?

I know a few cheats for making costume things (like how to convert a regular button-up shirt into a poofy one), but I don't want to type out a little tutorial for each piece of Jacks costume (that'd be a LOT of typing ^_^;).

The costume is not done and I do not sew nor can I use my mother's sewing machine, since she has one or have the time since I go to college full-time and work full-time on the weekends. To clarify, *yes I do have a pattern from simplicity.*

Thank you all for suggestions and comments,

Don't know if this has been brought up, but I just found an amazing slew of POTC3 images. Tons of high detail photos mostly of Elizabeth's brocade outfit (which seems to exist to baffle my skill level XD) but some good ones of Will and Jack as well. Enjoy!

Sparrowfan check out Redford-Films on eBay.

They currently have a Buy It Now for $189.00 with a starting bid of $179.00.

Sometimes they start as low as $100.00.

Another website that was selling a CJS sword similar to the MR version was Arms of Valor. They had one for $160.00 and would put an edge on it for you too for another $15.00.

That is weird. It's like she's wearing an embroidered apron *under* her gown. I guess it's just a trick by the costuming dept, though - I noticed Elizabeth's wedding dress was constructed the same way. The fashion fabric that showed in the front was really just a panel, not a whole petticoat. I'm not sure why they made Giselle's that way if they intended to draw it up like that. You can see the ruffled petticoat here: http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/0001sdra/

I've got other pics in my gallery too, if case you haven't seen them.

I'm on a budget and could not afford the MR sword. I just bought this one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320099079340

I figure with a little work and a new scabbard, it will be pretty darn close and only cost 1/3 of the price.

Has anyone ordered these boots:
http://www.piratemerch.com/pirate-boots-pirate120-p-406.html

I am a women's size 8.5 but I have a wide foot. SO I may get a size 9, since they don't have half-sizes.
Or should I get a mens 5 or 6..since I believe that is what the equivalent is.

If I had the money and bigger budget I would get the custom boots from Caboots but sadly since I have a small budget, these may have to do.

BUt I'm looking for reviews and suggestions:bigtu: :crest:

Actually, I know someone who has the same boots. It looks good, but be ready for your feet to hurt in those.

I finally have someone to help me with my wig. I contacted the people that I bought the wig from about changing the color. They said just use color spray.

Can't wait. It is so close to premeire. I will also be going to Magic Kingdom that day and wear my bodice, necklaces, and makeup because we can't go in full costume.

AVAST!

good news and bad news...

good news is that my dress is ALMOST DONE! just some remaining trim and hemming to do. Very Happy

bad news is when i tried it on with my bustier, the zipper split ( on the bustier which is way too small to begin with...i got it from work for $4 on clearance. XD [ i work at la senza ] ) so now i either need a magical pushup bra or another super cheap bustier.

HUMBA!

oh...and i also pleated the top of the skirt instead of gathering it...brain fart. BUT WHATEVER! noone will point it out, and it looks fine so im not too worried about it.

pics!!!!

( yes, im totally aware that in its current state it looks like a Swann dress. >_< )

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/ella.jpg

thats all for now since my digital camera still wont upload onto my computer and i have to do it downstairs tomorrow... those are cellphone pics and believe you me, the colour is way off. i tried to correct it in photoshop but it just doesnt catch it. its a very nice shiny gold though that has more of a yellow shine in brighter light. Oooh. aaah.

Well after 25 hours over a period of one month it is finally finished! I modified the design a bit in order to allow for better adjustment. Ms. Knighley's movie version does not have a rivet in between the frog and the longest strap. I don't have any clue how it is attached. It appears to be glued because I see not stitching unless the line stitch at the top is the possible joining point? I added the line stitch merely for accuracy.

Also the width is only 2 1/2 inches and that is due to the size of the buckle that was used. I also ended up painting the buckle with Amaco Rub N Buff which actually worked out really well after sanding the buckle down to give it a rough surface. The 3 inch leather belt blanks only gave me 1/4 inch to fold over and stitch. I will be using 3 1/2 inch belt blanks for the same baldric commission! More room to fold over and stitch.

I am still trying to figure out what to do about the small bumps that are all over the movie version. I didn't feel like making these little impressions all over the leather because of the fear of damaging the leather. I may use some type of 3D art paint and just put little dots everywhere. Any suggestions?

My hands hurt. Cutting material is probably my least favorite part of costuming.

Boy did I go to Joannes at the right time. I went to Joannes to get some more accurate CJS material for a coat im doing for a fellow CJS cosplayer. I found a JACKPOT in some Christpher Lowell fabric. Retail price? $29.99/yard Thats more expensive then the real stuff!

Luckily all their home decorating fabric was 1/2 off, so it was only $15 and I only needed 4.5 yards.

I also picked up COMPLETELY accurate material for my moms PES coat. Along with VERY awesome material to make my Tia Shawl.

I also picked up some material, as my mom is making CJS boots using SithCamaros tutorial. Will post pics of that as soon as shes done.

I found this really awesome material that I am going to selectively tea stain for Wills vest. It has that intricate design on it, and I plan on sewing this "quilted" material I bought by hand and adding some fill to make it raised. If it turns out like what I'm invisioning it should look awesome.

Found decent material for PES vest. Its a little too red, but im hoping to experiment with some dyes after its done and sponge it.

I think thats it for updates! Not looking forward to lining this coat. I HATE dealing with lining!!... lol

Just thought I'd post to say that between now and the release of AWE I'm going to be improving my costume as much as I can. I'm actually getting ready to work on a new shirt which will be more accurate than the one I have now... not to mention the last one I had was store bought... not as cool. :P

Why not make one? I think Wediznutt made one out of polymer clay (or some other modeling material like that)? You'd probably make a "skeleton" out of metal wire, and model it around it so then it keeps it's form/doesn't break as easily.

Haven't tried this myself, but I believe that's the way to do it. :)

NO! Never use anything but leather dye to stain leather! Leather dye/stains need to penetrate the leather in order to achieve the color you want. Some people do paint leather but that is only when highlighting/painting crafted leather (images put into the leather with leather punch or actually crafting the image).

Get ye to a Michaels or JoAnns. They have leather sections albeit small but they may have the stain you are looking for. Are you specifically looking for the maroon color?

Worst case scenario just order it directly from Tandy. They have 4 oz bottles for under $10.00 that way you don't have to buy a gallon!

few updates! :D

i dont care whatchu say, Neon! i think sith-worlds buckles are beautiful. the fact that theyre factory made metal cast pieces are enough to win me over. And my Jack too. he actually offered all of the items he was purchasing at starting bid price and combined all the shipping for $30 for 4 items. *_* hes a FANTASTIC seller and i absolutely cannot wait for the items to arrive. ( i already know the sides of the potc2 baldric buckle arent punched out, still think its beautiful. ) though im very very glad you found a buckle that you liked enough to purchase! *cheers* much love to ebay.

and enough dilly dally! time for pictures! ( with makeshift belts because ours havent come in yet )

Hiya people!
I'm making a Will Turner-costume from Dead Man's Chest and need some help. I've noticed that Will wears a necklace, but I can't find a decent screenshot/picture of it anywhere.
Here's one of the best ones I've found: http://www.theorlandobloomfiles.com/pictures/movie/pirates2/promo47.jpg
and that doesn't reveal too much. Does anyone have any tips?

Okay, I need a good pic of Tia with her shawl on. I only have one. My mother will be crocheting it with black yarn. On one of her pics it looks like the black is really faded and torn. So I will just leave it outside in the sun for some days and shread some of it.:blubber: Mom dosen't mind if I ruin her work.

Well the aging of buttons continues. The buttons are now being strung out on chopsticks like shishkabob because it is taking as Bo'sun would say, "Too Long!"

I found some fabric at Jo-Annes im going tatter and age sew hems around to make the shawl.

So I realized last night that We had intended on using the patterns ive been using for my dad and Wedizinutt for my mom and brothers costumes.

As i was hemming the coat last night I realized i should make my mom try it on, since her coat will be the same size. Ummmm yeah, shes much smaller than that. DUH So i had to go buy the XS, S, M pattern, and then I spent the rest of the night cutting out fabric. FUN.

Wedizinuts coat, and will and elizabeths vests will be completed on Monday. Maaaaayybee shirts as well. The vests and the shirts are simple to throw together. Im just worried about the detailing on elizabeths shirt. Her sleeve ends are drawstrings, ive made drawstrings on pajama pants before...just not sure how im gonna do it on these sleeves. I will most definitly have a big picture update at the beginning of next week!!!

Hey! WEDiznutt....not WEDizzynut! You make me sound like I am weird or something....(actually I am!) So did Tia get put in the corner or did Captain Jack boldly say "No one puts Tia in the corner" and proceeded to go doo that voodoo that they doo so well! Sorry Dirty Dancing and Blazing Saddles references in one sentence!

Still waiting for leather belt blanks from Canada ArrBay for two more baldrics. Started stitching the scabbard and should be ready to stain this weekend. Cut my template for a more accurate scabbard AND updated the paint job on the Elusive Seagull and Wave charm! This is part of a project for Captain Jack Sparrow Wig 3.0. Shortening dreads, applying more similar materials (cloth, leather), and more accurate coins. Me likey the results especially with the recent HI RES pics of Johnny Depp in the studio! I can now see all the darn tootin' things hanging from his dreads. Oh speaking of dreads I had some leftover Kanekalon hair so I am adding six more dreads which will be short little stubby ones.

And like everyone else pics will follow soon.

Me likey the ringtones. I purchased the Yo Ho version for my already pirated out Razr cell phone!

(for those of you who dont know, i went to the 20th anniversay release of Dirty Dancing last night)

It was weird watching it with people who were *really* into it. I had to keep myself from judging when Johnny Castle came back to do the last dance with Baby and everyone was clapping and cheering. because when i saw POTC: DMC everyone was clapping and cheering when CJS appeared. Idk. Pirates > Dirty Dancing. JMO tho...

Funny Jack Crossplay update:
So I got all the fabric for the costume and after I made it, I realized "well theresa you totally got the wrong fabric and if Jack were wearing things he would look rather cheap and sort of..like the Deluxe Costume" so then I just scrapped the whole idea and I commissioned the costume. I know its sort of not allowed or something, but I've spent over 300 dollars so far, and I'm not done.
I guess that counts for something.

All that's left for me is to make a new shirt out of linen instead of muslin, fix my broken belt buckle on the charm belt, and then line my coat. And then of course age a few things here and there. Hopefully I'll be uploading pics soon.

For whatever reason (that cannot really be discussed) Master Replica is really moving slow on their new Blister Packs. I finally got an email last week saying that the bandana beads will start shipping from the MR warehouse May 18th.

You would figure they would get ready for the release of AWE as they did with DMC although about 1/4 of the new stuff coming out is from DMC. It is all about the marketing...

There is always othe eBay vendors or Noble Collections. Of course you could make your own from polymer clay I project I just gave up on!

After using SithCamaros tutorial, and tweaking a lot of it, with 2 pairs of botched boots... We have amazingly awesome pirate boots. Suede, the correct color... and just so much better than anything we found on the internet.

If anyone would be interested, we're going to put some on ebay, since they were simple to make and Jack Boots that are actually the right color, are impossible to find at a more affordable price than $350. I'll have a pic up later tonight, and the ebay listing as well. im at work and dont have access to that stuff

Pirate Reine: Those look great! Where did you find them? From the first photo I see a DSW sign in the background...Discount Shoe Warehouse?

All the boots that I was looking for my pirate Elizabeth Swann (PES) always were too large or had too high of a heel until we found some great pair on eBay. They have pointy toes but work great because they are flats!

If you didn't pay too much for them here are some tips for weathering and breaking them in!

1. Purchase a nice set of Dr. Scholls Vibram shoe liners. It makes the biggest difference in comfort!

2. Wear them first before you wear them for a cosplay. This ensures that they are broken in and you won't end up walking around barefoot while in costume. I speak from experience when PES had to buy sneakers while we were at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween at DLR.

3. Wear them out on a rainy day and walk through some puddles. Let them dry out! It does wonders to the suede like finish.

4. Use some sand paper and lightly sand areas that would be worn over time such as the buckets, the fronts, and around the heel.

Hope that helps. Post your before and after pics!

Well I said I wasn't going to do it because it was a wee bit gross BUT after spending a day out in Corona, CA at the Cutthroats of Corona seeing all the likes of wenches, pirates, and psuedo Rennaissance costumers I took the plunge.

Many of these people were running around with real furs, animals tails, and sorted furry things hanging off of there costumes. I have been researching the types of "paws with claws" that Captain Jack Sparrow carries on his belt. I already knew that one had to be a fox paw and possibly a mink, however as Penny Rose on the DMC DVD Extras describes them as "an unsuspecting, manky, wild animal that got in Jack's way and was then propabaly later consumed."

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/CJS%20Paws%20with%20claws/CJSJDclaws.jpg

So I went to the Internet and sure enough I shopped where all pirates shop...ArrrrBay!

Okay so I will be doing "Captain" Jack Sparrow for halloween and next anime detour and might do the renaissance festival. Does anyone know where I can get a gun and sword that looks like his but is cheap. And when I buy them should smear some dirt on them to give them that dirty look. I bet this was already discussed but I am a lazy pirate that doesn't feel like reading all of it. Also is studying the movies good enough to get the pirate talk, and pirate walk down or does somebody have any other ideas on how I can get it okay.

Funny that the first question you ask is one I can't answer! lol. Though it seems both stefunierocks and Wediznutt gave good answers.

Though I must say that I have in the past actually used my eyeliner on my hands for very black and dirty spots. But I really don't know anything about makeup so I figure there are probably better ways to go about that.

For his gun, the electronic pistol toy from Zizzle works fine. It looks pretty good if given a better looking paint job.

When it comes to the sword, cheap is sorta hard to come by. The cheapest one I know of I'm not even sure if you'd be allowed to carry in a convention atmosphere. But I'm not 100% sure on that.

Also, smearing dirt on stuff is not really a recommended way to make stuff look diry oddly enough... it's very temporary. To weather things you'll have to look into various paints (prop wise)... tea dying (for the costume itself) and various other tools like sandpaper and things to really wear the edges out.

Also is studying the movies good enough to get the pirate talk, and pirate walk down or does somebody have any other ideas on how I can get it okay.

Aye, watch the movies as many times as you can handle if you intend on really getting into the Jack character. I'd also recommend reading anything you can about the character (Wikipedia is a good start), for sometimes it can delve into more traits and even explain things that the movie doesn't necessarily do.

In continuing the upgrade of my wig I have created the shorter, stubbier, skinnier, and fatter dreads to add to my wig. At the last minute I came up with the idea to burn the ends of my dreadlocks to get a very clean end. As the Kanekalon hair is burning I twist the dread in the flame to get a nice even melting. This keeps the hairs bundled nicely. Do not inhale though...stinky!

Ew!

No need to get your mom a wig. Do what I did with my wifey PES. Have your mom pull her hair back into a whatever type of ponytail she can make. Get some blond Kanekalon synthetic hair and braid a large ponytail. Wrap it with a leather strap and tie on both ends. I added a small hair clip now so all I have to do is work wifey's ponytail through the braided faux ponytail and clip to her hair. Wrap both her hair and faux hair in the leather strap to hide all the different types of hair.

Voila!

Not the best picture but you get the idea.

Stephunierocks dad's baldric:

- Still waiting for the leather belt blanks. This is taking almost 10 days. I am hoping by Monday!
- Scabbard done!!!
- Frog - Cut and punched but not stitched. Waiting for belt blanks to measure after stitching.

Wig upgrade 2.1:
- Shortened most of my dreads and burned the ends. Looks much better but I am not to sure if I cut them too short. The dread ends hang about 4-5 inches below the shoulders. I still need to add the short, stubbier, skinny/fatter dreads this week.

Moustache - Growing again!!!

Awaiting arrival of:
- Paws with claws!
- Baldric buckle from ACME. My second CJS baldric commission! $$$$$$\
- Feathers for Cannibal Jack scepter
- Singapore PES Chinese tsuba sword

Next cosplay will be a Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike contest at Pirate N Plunder (I hope) and meeting pirate Marty, Pintel, and Bo'sun at Pirate N Plunder.

Im sleepy. Anyway. Here are some pics! We have to work on my mom looking more like Liz. I think were gonna get her a wig. Any other suggestions? Shes not happy with her face. My brother is a DEAD ON will though isnt he? It continues to get odd for me, since my dad is CJS and my brother is Will. Cuz i think jack is hot...but its my dad and... yeah. weird.

Woah there... TMI.. j/k

They all look great! I'm so envious that your family gets into the spirit of things... mine just accept the fact that I'm a cosplaying pirate weirdo and they stay in the shadows as far away as possible. Haha! Not that their negative or anything... just... different in taste. :P

Progress report:

Well, on Saturday my CotBP buckle arrived from ACME Brand. It looks AWEsome! Looks like it came straight from the props dept. (It's already weathered and everything!). If only my blanks would arrive... grr...

I was at Micheal's today to get some stuff for the belt (rivets and such), but it seems they didn't have any stain. Fortunately though I hear there's a Tandy Leather Factory in downtown Orlando... not too far away, and surely they have what I need.

Wig is pretty much done, but the headscarf ponytail and the small side braid always seem to look... wrong. Of course I'm very hard to please because I'm in a "I want 110% accuracy" type mood. lol

In my opinion, there are two great POTC replica makers: Sithcamero and Acme Brand.

I have purchased the Jack Sparrow belt buckle and the Jack Sparrow second belt w/buckle from Acme Brand. Would highly recommend him on anything POTC.:)

Actually I just used green polymer clay and used a technique from my old arts n crafts days. I simply folded the clay over and over again until I obtained lines in the clay. After firing I wet sand down the clay so that the lines stand out and clay powder gets clogged in the spaces. Seal with shiny/matte sealer and VOILA veins!

You could also inscribe larger lines in the clay before sealing to get a more marbled look too.

Other techniques though is to mix the solid color with translucent color to get a similar effect but I didn't have any of the translucent stuff. They even sell jade like polymer clay too but I haven't seen it in the craft stores.

Some links I used:

As always a god send ya' be CJS!

oh forgot...while I'm picking brains i was wondering if anyone had the technical term for what these "strips" on Lizzy's boots are?

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/pietruch_fdb/piraci/keira_24.jpg

they run down the center of the boot...I believe the one on the bottom part is just top stitching...I know it can't be piping (it "sticks" out)...maybe it's topstitching but you'll notice how the vertical strip actually goes over the horizontal one...

got my pattern done and the "leather" cut out...now just to sew together...oh! btw...I found this nifty little link for those who are brave enough to sew leather:

The key to doing an excellent job with CJS makeup is to not make yourself look too much like a raccoon or panda bear. Believe me as a dude it took me forever to get the make up right. My first trial was disasterous until a friend of mine showed me how to apply the eyeliner and shadow.

The best way to apply is to buy an ayuvedic stick. This is what they used in the movie. It is a basic waterproof, smearproof, black eyeliner in a lipstick sized stick. If you have the Dead Man's Chest DVD go to the Extras section and you can see how it is applied to Johnny Depp.

If you are using a black costume stick/crayon be sure to switch and get some waterproof/smearproof eyeliner and shadow. It doens't have to be the best but make sure they are water/smear-proof because it makes the world of difference.

Here are some pics from My Gallery on how my friend applied the makeup the first time. After 4 cosplays as Captain Jack she told me I had to do it myself!

Key points is not too much at the top on your eyelid and not too little below the eye. Get as close as you can to the eyelashes without going into the tear line because that is painful removing....remember I'm a dude and it hurts! Blending below the eye is key. Meaning going dark from the eyelash area and slowly fading away...black to light black!

Practice practice practice. I can now get ready in about 2 minutes using the ayvedic stick and about 5 using eyeliner and shadow.

The ayuvedic stick is available on eBay but some people tell me you can get it in make up stores that only sell makeup. I don't really know because I don't go to those kinds of places...yet!

Hope this helps!

her ya go on the makeup:

Looking good. Here is a post that I added awhile back. My friend (who is doing my makeup) contacted MAC (the makeup company that does the makeup for the POTC movies) and received this info:

Thank you for taking the time to email us at M7A7C Pro Online. I'm happy to
assist you.

- For the tribal designs, I recommend M7A7C Pro PAINT STICKS. They are
highly pigmented emollient colour sticks that provide a non-greasy,
natural/matte finish. You can apply them directly to skin or with a brush
for an opaque effect. Paint Sticks are designed to be used on the face or
body and they are available in a wide range of shades including primary,
secondary, neutral and fantasy. For intricate detailing with the tribal
designs, I recommend using M7A7C #209 Eyeliner Brush. You may want to
consider Paint Stick shades: True Chartreuse (for the nose), Black Black,
Pure White and Basic Red.

- For the eyes, to get a smoky effect along the bottom lash line, use M7A7C
ENGRAVED Powerpoint Eye Pencil (a water proof black). Smudge the line using
M7A7C #219 Pencil Brush with a little bit of M7A7C GLOSS added on top for a
shiny effect.

- Contour the cheeks with M7A7C Sheertone Blush in TANTONE a medium, muted brown. Apply the colour under the cheekbone using M7A7C Large Contour Brush
#168.

- Deepen the brows, mustache and goatee using M7A7C BLACK Mascara X (lightly comb through).

I hope this helps you. For your convenience, your recommended
products may be viewed and/or purchased online, simply go to:
www.macpro.com

We hope you will continue to visit us at M7A7C Pro Online. If we can be of
further assistance, please let us know.

Kindest regards,

Amy G. M7A7C Pro
Online Makeup Artist

Adding the lipgloss below the lower eyelid turned out to be a KEY element in the true CJS look. It doesn't have to be MAC products. I found that the MAC mascara blends the best so you don't end up looking like a raccoon.

Jeesh! Dudes talking about makeup!:bigcry:

I believe that would be a personal choice....I don't know how effective slapping makeup on the facial hair would be (Then again I wouldn't know I have none being a female...not to mention it sounds like it would hurt:toothy: )...but if you want to go for the least hassle I would say dye...but then you'd have the other problem of hair growing out and roots (even on facial hair) showing themselves over time unless there is a temporary hair color for facial hair...and...

well...you decide :toothy:

I was in a band a few years back, and I had white blonde streaks in my hair, that I would color pink for shows. I used this stuff that you combed in, and then washed out. I remember they had black. Head over to your local beauty supply store and inquire about something like that. IM sure they still make it, then put it in your facial hair.

If thats too much work or too expensive, lots of mascara will do the trick.

As for 'tanning' buy a bronzer compact, and some bronzer foundation. This will darken you up, apply it anywhere your skin is shown.

OR order some stage makeup, i used some heavy duty 'cake cream' dilluded with water for Tia, and ihave to put on my arms and back because i am pretty pale myself. The good thing about that stuff is that once its on, its set and it doesnt rub off onto furniture, or come off in the rain.

Good luck!

The Acme-Brand belt says it will fit 30-38...I have a 34 inch waist...and with the fabric..of the shirt and the sash and the pants..am I pushing it as far as comfort...the sith-world belt is longer.

i think it might fit, but it might be hard to do the special fold and have enough belt hanging down since it is a shorter. he's is wearing acme's

my waist is around 40 and sithworld custom fitted me without any extra charge.

Thank you for the help, thanks to u guys I figured it out :D!! Very much appreciated ^_^

I want to see if any of you may perchance have an idea as to what type of leather has been used along the front (and other areas as well) of Lizzys armor?:

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/pietruch_fdb/piraci/keira_7.jpg

I noticed it "flaking" upwards a bit and appears reptilian (snake/alligator)...any other ideas as to what this could be?? (boy I hope it isn't Komodo Dragon)....

thank you :)

GG! It is definitely reptilian. After looking at HI RES images of KK I am going to go with crocodile only because it is readily available to costuming houses in Hollyweird. Komodo dragons are protected so I think probably not!

http://www.rochfordsupply.com/product_listing.asp_Q_CatID_E_413_A_SubCatID_E_575 _A_ProdID_E_3822

How are you going to do the leather aromor plating that resembles scales? As well as the metal pieces that go down the front of the outfit in which said crocodilian leather is weaved through?

Just curious!

My upper belt is 48 inches and my lower belt is 58 inches. My waist is 36 with shirt, breeches, and sash so this gives me alot of room to work with on the special CJS tuck loop. I purposely made my belts extra long for that reason.

LOL...well the KD was a joke...hey back then they were fair game ;)

oh that's easy I've made three templates for the scales...they're called Eurasian by this one site (fusion of Euro and Asian style:toothy: )...and going to cut them out of *gasp* Naugahyde *eek* (only because the fashion leather fake stuff is not stiff enough) oh well until I can afford real leather that's going to have to do...all of the armor and headware will be made of the stuff...I know I'm going to die of heat....and the "toggles" down the front will probably be made out of craft foam hardened with modgpodge or woodglue after the details have been "burned" into them (one of them nifty woodburners with teeny tiny tip)...I think they "cheated" with the front piece...I wouldn't be surprised if its a "false" front...

my goodness...there sure are a lot of "" 's in this post....I'm just taking this whole project from a theatre point of view...made well...but faking a lot of detail...

figures crocodile is just as expensive as a whole cowhide LOL...*sigh*

maybe arrrbay?? *goes to look*:bigtu:

well I found this in PVC it looks matte and ok so they call it snakeskin but I think it would work (the miracles of weathering):

http://www.distinctivefabric.com/fabric.php?product=PVCSNAKE

I think I'll go with that....unless CJS Wediznutt found something better and less expensive (wouldn't put it past him) :toothy:

Boy I hate to think how many "naugas" you had to kill, skin, and tan just to get their "hydes"....?:crylaugh:

That is going to be alot of detailed work. Have you thought of using hard plastic for the metal ornamental items in the front? You could paint and seal them with acrylic? The wood sounds good. Be sure to use some type of hardwood or you will end up having to use some type of outer hardener like fiberglass or resin. I made a CJS wood sword out of balsa and trying to figure out how to stiffen the balsa wood so it doesn't snap! Fiberglass is messy and stinky...so is resin! You pay the price of having the ease of carving the wood (balsa) but the weakness or the difficulty of carving the wood (some type of hardwood) but not having to stiffen the piece and worrying about it breaking.

Check your local Tandy Leather (City of San Dog may be closest) because sometimes they get exotic scarp leather (reptiles) and sell it for really cheap. If you need regular leather I have so much scrap pieces 8-9 ounce that you could use for the small scale pieces in the armor post POTC premiere pre Comic-con/Anime Expo. Let me know. The stuff is piling up on the futon and me wifey says I need to do something with it. I don't have the heart to throw them away but I was thinking of making pirate eyepatches!!!:reverse:

LOL:rofl: aye! I think I wiped out the population of "naugas" for sure!

egads...hmmm....go visit the local Home Despot for some wood (hard), wouldn't take much already have the design traced and ready to go burn the designs..yeah...that's entirely possible....yeah! *light bulb went off*

Now if suddenly Captain Jack Sparrow went all gray or developed male pattern baldness in POTC 4...I have to say my wig will NO LONGER require any more upgrades! After one year it is finally DONE! Fin!!

The upper front with my darkened leather tricorn hat and some new bandana dangles!

End of the dreads. I ended up cutting the ends off of about 7 of my really long dreadlocks and burning the ends so that they will never again unravel. The ends are also nice and clean and look like the real deal!

New paint job on the seagull and wave charm:

Close up of the new charms. They are not exact but they are close enough. Year of the dragon is the Chinese zodiac sign I was born under.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/12Closeupofcharms_resize.jpg

New large Burmese coin. I used Amaco Rub N Buff antique gold to get the color:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/13NewBurmesecoin_resize.jpg

Chinese zodiac half scallop charm at the end of the one dreadlock:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/14Halfscallopcharm_resize.jpg

Two scallop coins on the right side. They are actually identical to the bandana coin which is again a Burmese coin:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/15ScallopedBurmesecoin_resize.jpg

I found these hair extension attachments and switched it from an alligator clip that was on my long dangle. It is so much easier to put on and take off.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/16Newdangleconnector_resize.jpg

The back. I added about 10 new dreadlocks of varying size, length, color, and circumerence. CJS has alot of small stubby black dreads on the right side so I added those too. Burned all the ends to get that clean cut look!http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/sakodasan/Wig%20Upgrade%202_1/17Backandponytail_resize.jpg

Closeups of the dreadlocks ends. Up close you can see where I burned the ends of each dread but from a few feet away you can't really tell:

I can't find anything like those items. The closest I could come was this: http://www.chinesebrasshardware.com/

I even tried to look up architectural medallions/rosettes in hopes of finding something similar to the piece on the middle of the belt. I think they're going to have to be made from Sculpy. :(

I ordered everything..I needed..well sort of.
Do to my budget I could only get one belt.

Things I couldn't get:
-fur pelts, and other dangling charms
-second belt
-baldric and sort
-hat
-coat

but I got everything else ...
