Progress report/ checking in.

Getting close to the detailing aspect of the dern costume and as I promised a friend I would post a progress report.

Will Turner: AWE Version - In progress Gallery (http://images.cosplay.com/gallery.php?cat=74331&member=44563)

If there's things I'm overlooking please point them out (unless it's boob-binding or the beard thing. I'll only do that when I need to). I want to be up to snuff with everyone else at the premiere.

Pirates Life For Me:
(just answer this when you get back from your trip)

We're still meeting out at Disney at noon right? Did we ever decide on a location (though the little gift shop area outside of the ride might be a good idea)?

Apparently:

"There's an awesome picture of the sculpture-in-progress of Tia Dalma, made by the National Entertainment Collectibles Association!"

Might help w/ some costuming I dunno, but... I had to post it.

They're boot covers. The shoes themselves are chunky heeled... and well they look good with the boot covers, but I doubt that Will Turner would wear heels (though that would be funny). I've gotta run to a part store so that I can get some rubber strips to make it look a bit better (dern my shortness!)

I'm off Tuesday-Friday, so I can meet up with you pretty easily during any of those days. Let me know what theater number you get when you get your ticket. We want to make sure that we're in the same one (because you know that they're going to open as many theaters as they can get away with for the premiere.)

*damned near dies laughing* Dude... If I could afford that many flowers I'd pull a Connie and Carla with that bit. That would be ridiculously awesome! X'D

The boots covers are something I managed to nab from work when I worked at Madge Elaines... so they're theatrical quality at least. I already broke the strap on one, but I was planning on replacing that with velcro anyways.

My shortness will be revealed when I stand next to everyone anyways, so I guess that there's no real need to keep it secret. X'D

Whee! We got tickets to the 8:00 showing!

DH's wig is now completely updated with more accurate beads and more dreads, so his costume is pretty much complete. I'm just going to wear my shift, stays, bumroll, and underpetticoat and be a Tortuga whore, because I didn't want to make Scarlett's outfit and I don't look like any other character.

I also have another costume that I'm keeping secret because it's spoilery, if my source is correct. I'll post some pics of it after the film is out. :)

hey Limeyaku,
i think the only good place to get high end boots are from caboots.com
but they need time to make them also, so that would be good if you are time sensitive.

I picked up these boots: http://www.5thfloorproductions.com/brlepibo.html for my pirate Liz costume. Pretty nice boots and fast shipping (they're located in Josha Tree, CA)- my only complaint is that they're made from a thinner leather more suited for clothing, so you really can't rough them up to give them the "warn in" look without probably doing some serious damage to them. Other then that, they're pretty comfy, and look good- a good alternative for someone who wants real leather boots, but can't afford caboots.

I got my boots from that exact same website, though I think I got the shinier looking brown boots. (At the time the product pages were mislabeled).

But be sure be careful with sizes, buying shoes online can be tricky. If you're not entirely sure what to go with, I figure too big is better than too small. I mean, after all there's always the options of wearing thick socks if they're too big etc. And you can't exactly shrink yer feet to fit small shoes! :P

Hmm.. yeah, I've been thinking about ways to weather mine up. Someone said to me to try dark colored shoe polish? But that sounds sorta fishy to me... so I haven't done that.

Speaking of weathering fabric, what would you guys suggest for aging and weathering fabrics so they don't look so new. I plan on taking sandpaper to the edges and areas around the knees and so forth to rough areas up- but what about giving fabric that "sunbleached" and salty look without having to stick it out in the sun for days on end. Liz's waistcoat has very distinct "weathering on it"- it almost looks like stripes as you can see in some pictures: http://www.costumersguide.com/potc2/pirate17.jpg http://www.costumersguide.com/potc2/pirate29.jpg What do you guys suggest? I was thinking of perhaps taking some concentrated Rit dye remover and painting "stripes" onto the fabric, then wash it off. Anyone have other ideas?

I don't know if this helps but I started a weathering Gallery. I used dilute bleach and a sponge and just barely dabbed the sponge onto the waistcoat.

It's all about the marketing mate! They are trying to beat out Spidey 3. If they do this spells good news for POTC4 starting pre-production in summer of 2010 for release in 2011. All actors have signed their pre-contracts.

If the POTC 3 totals top 1 billion worldwide as did DMC stand by for the new trilogy of POTC movies...!

*sighs*

DONT go into your local Disney Store. I accidently spent $150.

I got:
CJS asian themed flip flops
Tia Dalma Action Figure
T-shirts for myself, my mom and my dad
a purse
an asian sword holding a ripped up AWE flag
CJS sword holding a DMC flag
and a Elizabeth Swann Asian Crown. That i will wear to WDW the next chance I get.

They also had some little mermaid stuff I bought, along with some Tiki mickey stuff as well. Someone please take my credit card and place it somewhere I cant find it.

In other news... after I finish Wedizinutts coat, my moms PES coat, My brothers Will coat, Will waistcoat, finish lining and detailing my dads CJS coat, and completely dissassembling my Tia dress to be on a real corset, and have a detachable coat.

I will start on Elizabeths Asian Princess getup. BECAUSE YOU KNOW I LOVE HAND BEADING THINGS. lol I just love the look of that costume!

Id post a progress pic of Wedizinutts coat, but im not allowed photobucket at work, and i have to teach a flute lesson tonight, so i wont be on till late!

Feel free Wedizinutt, if youd like to post/update for me.

It looks striped in that pic, but if you look at the costumers guide site, you'll see its more of a brushed ornate pattern. I found good looking fabric at Wal-Mart for 2.97/yard

I ordered everything..I needed..well sort of.
Do to my budget I could only get one belt.

Things I couldn't get:
-fur pelts, and other dangling charms
-second belt
-baldric and sort
-hat
-coat

but I got everything else ...

I found my dads fur pelt at PetsMart in the cat toys. It looks JUST LIKE IT. And it was only 2.99.

I cant help you with the other stuff.....short of making things yourself, and trying to find things from around the house.

1. What material is the vest made out of? If it is a polyester blend it will be difficult to dye without dunking said item into the solution. Have you tried using a sponge and really pushing the dye into the material? You could also try and lighten it first by using dilute bleach and sponge method. After that rinse really well or wash and than attempt the dye process again.

2. The belts around her chest/shoulder is called a baldric. Without making one out of real leather (ugh! I am no my fourth baldric) go to Target and buy a couple of belts and string them together or sew them. The last time I was looking for PES baldric buckle I saw that Target had some belts for about $30.00 that could be used for said item. I didn't want to spend that much but rather buy real leather since I had time to work on the item.

3. See and read number 2!

Be happy he can grow a beard unlike moi! I have to use the fake stuff!

Wig is great but it must be the lighting from the flash that makes the back look blondish but I am sure it really isn't!

Hints (sorry I am in obessive costume disorder as I finish up a two CJS baldrics before the premiere and adding yet four more dreads to my wig to use up leftover faux hair!!!)

1. Move the "V' in the bandana a little bit more over the right eye and the bandana dangle should hang just over the said "V".

2. Trim up the ends of the beard braids by just about 1/8 inch. The do actually look a little bit too long.

3. Moustache is looking a wee bit Fu Manchu-ish but it could just be the way his mouth is sitting in the pic.

Other than that I cannot wait to see him in the complete CJS attire!

Yeah, it's definitely not blonde, and neither is it black. It could stand to be a teense darker, but Jack's hair is brown with reddish highlights, so I think it works. Here's a slightly better pic of the color: http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000ftw67
And Jack, for comparison: http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000k3x8b

1. Jack's bandana is different in every pic. I actually wish I had put the border on the inside and just left the ground pattern to show, as that's how his most often looks. I might change it like that later, but right now the beads are all sewn down.
2. He refuses to cut it.
3. Yeah, the facial hair needs some work in general. He's also got to grow out the scraggly stuff on the side and I think shave a bit off the front of the goatee - it comes up too far toward the soul patch. These were just impromptu pics of the wig, really, but he insisted I braid his beard. ;)

Scraggly stuff on the side is easy and he doesn't have to look scraggly with the real stuff. I cut small lengths of Kanekalon hair off black, apply a light layer of costume adhesive (spirit gum or Telesis 5), and add the hair around the jawline and upper cheeks. It works out great! I try to blend it into the fake beard I wear and make it as scraggly as possible.

I've attempted to grow out my beard and soul patch and I end up looking more like Sao Feng or Tai Huang!:crylaugh:

Here's the pictures of it that I have gathered thus far....

that would be me...I'm endeavoring on this massive insane journey...

here's some basics...the coat is made up of panels...the back panel is one piece and slightly dipped/flared ....colors are black and gold the detail is embroidery not couching....the hat has a dark red "bolo" cord at least 3mm wide...the leather has croco details....

I just got done making details for the armor (some not all, yet) out of sculpey which I am then going to make a latex mold out of them which then means I can make them either out of resin/celluclay/ etc etc (thinking friendly plastic) bought this nifty stuff called Castin' Craft Mold Builder now to find the resin spray locally

oh pics of my stuff so far:
http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/

I still have to mold the belt details and the bracer details...have some ideas on how to cheat those or I'll do it the hard way (normal for me)...I finally tailored my jacket but I'm unhappy with the back because well its not as I described above so now I get to take it apart again buy more material and start over for the back piece *sigh* then again maybe not doesn't look as bad as I thought can always make another one later...darn OAD...picture (ignore the ugly tired broad in the costume):

http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/coat2.JPG
http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/asianpirateliz/coat3.JPG

I redrafted the collar pattern to fit closer to the neck...I'm drafting the hat pattern as I type....I got real leather for the hat and will be purchasing real leather for the kidney belt...oh by the way the hat consists of six (6) panels for the crown...

egads...end of post children acting up....

gelflinggal - Then perhaps we can embark on this journey together. You can make the absolutely mesmerizing and accurate outfit and I'll make the broke college student economy version :p Though out of curiousity, how much do you imagine making this costume would cost?

LOL...ok deal ;) anal?? who me?? never...

so far *scratches head* the costume has cost me $500 (thank goodness for birthday money)...even using coupons and such...alot or a portion of the cost is the little things that one needs to make said costume...you know...thread....transfer paper...doo dads...:bigtu:

DOH! Justawench....thanks...and the wig looks vonderful!

Oh dear...I was afraid of that. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I'm working on a fan film project right now that requires a decent amount of costume changes. And since I'm the director and it's a self-funded project, I have to do all of the costumes. I really wish I could do Elizabeth's oriental costume, but at that price, I'm afraid I'm going to have to back out. GAH!

Oh well, at least now I'm well stocked up on reference photography when I actually get the money to do it. Sorry guys! :(

This is my fourth leather baldric and third Captain Jack Sparrow baldric. This is a commission for Stephunierocks Captain Jack Sparrowed dad!

I used 3 ounce leather this time which allowd me to work the leather edges, fold them over, and stitch. I also made the frog much larger to match the movie version as well as using fancy pewter conchos at the attchment points.

Sorry Tia Dalma..."sword not included!"

I liked this baldric style so much that I am almost finished making my new upgrade CJS baldric. Imagine it as The Making of Captain Jack Sparrow Baldrics 2 and 3 simultaneously like the movies!

Yike its May 17th!? Already!

Man, just now it's sorta sunk in how insanely close we are to AWE! Yikeys, lots of stuff to do on my costume... I need an extra pair of arms! Need to make the shirt, need to tea dye and weather... have a belt to make (started on that today), need better makeup supplies...

GAH!

I know this has been mentioned a bazillion times. But I really don't know what I'm doing in relation to makeup... For instance, I use my eyeliner as both eyeliner AND as a way to draw on facial hair. I've got some growth so it does actually look pretty good but I doubt that's reccomended to do and probably a better way to go about that. What do I do to look like a grungy pirate? What do I do to accentuate the face better etc.

Heck, being that there seems to be a good chunk of us pirates in my area, perhaps one of you would care to give me a tour of the makeup aisle sometime? Heh

The clock's a-tickin' mateys! World's End here we come!

Stephenie's basic CJS Makeup Tutorial for Men who dont wear Makeup on a normal basis.

You will need:

Covergirl eyeliner (I reccomend covergirl, because they make the eyeliner that is not a pencil, instead you twist and click it and it brings more eyeliner out. Not only does this glide well, smudge well, and stand up to waterproofing, its easy to use, and come with a handy smudger on the opposite end. Its in a package, not with the regular pencils.)

Basic Black Mascara - The less you spend, the more it will clump, and thats not good.

Any Bronzer

reddish pink blush.

To do:

Apply Bronzer to entire face, highlighing under your cheekbones, basically putting on more in places you would get sunburned more. Make sure to go into your ears and down your neck/chest, or you will look funny with a tan face and white neck.

Take eyeliner and do a thick line under your eye. Take the smudger, or your finger and blend (rub) so that it doesnt look like a solid line. Remember, he wears this to reflect the sun away from his eyes (like a football player) Think practical, not glam. Line the top lid of your eye, not as heavily and blend.

Take the the mascara brush and holding the brush horizontal, use down strokes to highlight or make a mustache. Pay attention to how jacks is angled.
Use the brush for the soul patch and the lower goatee. LIGHTLY (and i mean lightly, you dont want to look like Groucho Marx!) Put some mascara on your eyebrows to thicken/roughen them up. Then lightly put it on your jawline, to look scruffy.

Take the blush and on the right side of your face, give yourself some syphilis, in the form of a nice circle, use the bronzer to highlight around it and blend.

And thats it!

Good luck!

AND Wedizinutt! OMG I am blown away! Great job!!! Cant wait to see it!

Dragonmun

Stefunie - I can understand why you're recommending the bronzer as it is a good way to get a tanned effect, but it doesn't work the same on all skin. The different brands also don't work the same on all skin. For some people the bronzer will turn them orange. For others it will peel.

You don't seem to have any trouble with the second thing, so might I ask what brand it is that you use? It would be a good start for those that aren't going outside to get natural tans.

Neo - Before I give any advice I need to ask a couple of questions. What color is your facial hair naturally and is there a reason that you can't grow out the mustache and soul patch normally (like a job or something).

Or just walk down the street and find your local hooker! ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!

One point! Don't forget to bring said makeup with you especially if you are pulling a LONG cosplay and need to touchup!!!!!! You can also add a little bit of non-flavored, non-smelling, colorless lipgloss under the eyes to give it that pirate sheen! It also helps you to prevent your eyeliner from running from normal sweat!

Add some foundation before you start the entire process to keep oils and sweat down!

Holy crap! I know about make up! <Save me!>

Or you could make all your worries go away and buy a lead-free ayuvedic stick!!!

I am finishing up my CJS pirate flag and need to paint in the "sparrow" image that has been drawn on the black nylon material. I have started cutting the shapes to sew onto the flag but running out of time so I need to do a quick fix for the flag using fabric paint.

24 hours because of a MegaCon I wasn't quite prepared for (time management-wise). I'll never do that again. >_<

As for the fabric paint thing... I wish that I could recommend something good that doesn't come in those thing little bottles, but I can't... as we've forked over the money for em when we need em. Depending on what kind of fabric you're painting on and whether or not you have to wash it, I've seen acrylic paints work nicely.

Wediznutt
05-17-2007, 02:23 PM
Aye! Acrylic is what I was shooting for however on a flag which will be bending, flapping, moving about in the breeze I wasn't too sure how acrylics would work. I use it on everything else made of wood, metal, etc. but not fabric. Also not to sure if the acrylic sealer would be the same for fabric.

I may just give it a try on some scrap nylon material!

I use the light Neutrogena bronzer for my dad. Neutrogena tends to work for most everyones skin in my family. its a good product. And I finish it up with a cheap bronzer compact that I got at Big Lots.

For me, I use theatrical stage makeup, that i put all over my hands, and then i get my hands wet and then i rub it all over my top half (this sounds pornographic. lol. its not) to acheive that... dark skin I lack.

The stage makeup is also good for that wind-brushed look, which i also use on my Dad in conjunction with the bronzer and bronzer compact.

Stephenies easy guide to painting fabric!

Buy some 'puffy paint'
buy a paintbrush
grab some cardboard

squeeze puffy paint out of tube onto cardboard like your an artist
spread it around so it is most like paint than puffy paint

paint it onto fabric.

I use this method to create tshirts for my birthday every year. Works great!

Ah. hehe... I wasn't sure. I thought that you might have the "no facial hair" clause that many of my friends do where they work. Since your hair is dark brown, going over what you do have lightly with mascara will work for accenting it (for people with lighter facial hair it can look really odd because of complexion).

Wediznutt's recommendation of using fake hair is what I would suggest though. ^_~

If you're able to find it, get something called "crepe wool hair (http://www.fxsupply.com/bn_catalog/bn_hair.html)". All you do to apply it is just pull some fibers off he braid it comes in and use spirit gum to glue it to your face. The end result is a very realistic beard (mine ended up with me not being allowed into the womens restroom without ID at MegaCon).

Most theatrical supply shops have it or can order it. The only problem with our local area is that we have to keep fighting Pirates Dinner Theater for the stuff as they like to buy it all up.

I have some that I will be bringing with me to the premiere at Downtown Disney. If you're part of that group I'll let ya have some of mine. ^_~

Does your work have a NO BALDRIC BUCKLE policy? :crylaugh: Unfortunately I am only good a leather crafting and not at forging metal! I wish I had the time and space to work with pewter! That said I have to admit that all my buckles (except CJS lower belt) were all purchased off of ArrrBay. ACME brand and a fellow CJS mate of mine in the UK. I simply painted them up to be more realistic and weathered. Leather is my gig! ACME is currently selling WT baldric and belt buckles for $45 each. He is in LA so if you buy them you should get them in a few days. About 10 months ago I started creating the flower belt buckle out of polymer clay but gave up after two failed attempts of reinforcing the material. That is when I decided that these items had to be purchased or try to find a similar type buckle somewhere.

Leather work is actually pretty easy once you get started. The hard part is how long it takes to hand stitch. Most leather crafters that produce in bulk use a heavy duty sewing machine but I like the look of hand stitching. It looks more professional and you can control the look better than with a machine. Besides they didn't have sewing machines in the 17th century!

Sorry this is long!:snoring:

Hehe. I guess that they do to some extent. All of the real Baldrics were sold a long time ago (they're made to order items)... with the buckles attached. All that's left there are Santa belts and a lot of creativity. X'D

Well... I can easily enough talk to the people getting me into the parks to take me on Friday instead of Thursday. I also just happen to not work the 25th, but the problem that I'm running into is that the people coming with me had to request the 24th off specifically with their works... so they won't be able to transfer.

What I think that I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and take them to the parks on the 24th. If our group does transfer the park meet-up to Friday, then I'll go to that as well. :D

Simultaneous workings of CJS baldrics but I still need to hand stitch and stain! After that it is pirate Elizabeth Swan 2.0 and William "the whelp" Turner 1.0! Baldrics R Us!!!

I have also created the paisley pattern in a piece of plastic using a soldering iron to burn the pattern. This is my stencil that will be used to create the repeating pattern in the leather parts. The pattern will be indented into the leather and hopefully when stained the dye will collect in the pattern lines and show through.

Note to self! Must test on scrap leather first!

If successful I may be recalling CJS baldric 2.0 from Florida to create this pattern. STEPH!!! After the premiere though! BREATHE!

AWEsome mate! I guess you'll eagerly await the DVD so you can take screencaps? Or perhaps bring a pad and pencil to jot down some noted while watching the movie? ;) j/k

It seems like Sao Feng will be pretty darn tricky, but yet as you said... you seem to be addicted to leather at the moment. :P

Wediznutt

Actually the Sao Feng costume really doesn't look too difficult. The onlyl part that would require some detailed images would be that strange horse collar that he wears. There are quite a few brass/leather ornate fixtures as well as his belt which is similar to SES. Most of those parts could be made from leather, wood reinforced for strength, and the jewels.

The fabric underneath is an emerald robe over pajama pants. He doesn't wear any shoes so that would be a cosplay challenge. Chinese characters could be sewn onto the fabric and the other characters can be painted. (Thus some of my previous questions regarding painting fabric). I am sure his fabric is silk but I will stick to the cheaper material.

Shave my head and make the scars with liquid latex, moustache is simple, beard too.

Got some more progress shots of the costume for those keeping up with me through the thread here.
^_^:

changes since last time:

1.) hemmed everything
2.) used red sharpie to get stripes on sash
3.) tea-stained the coat and the sash
4.) made buttons and then weathered them
5.) fixed the issue I had with my boots.
6.) made Will's stupid beaded necklace.
7.) VEST!!!! (actual suede. Shorter than Will's actual vest. Don't care cause suede is expensive as hell >_<)

Pictures:
1.) William Turner's Necklace (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091239) (Making that face because of a scary Gene Simmons thing that came on TV)
2.) Full thing with vest (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091214) (Front)
3.) Full thing with vest (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091218) (Back)
4.) vest (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091216) (Front)
5.) vest (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091219) (back)
6.) boots (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091215)
7.) Sash (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1091220)

I guess that I'm actually almost done. The only real things that I can think of left are make-up related.... which all comes later. >_>

ooooooooooooo!! dragonmun, it looks fantastic so far!! cant wait to see it all togther with your facial hair, too! xD

no updates yet...hitting the grind tomorrow to get everything finished as i have the weekend off!!

still keeping our fingers crossed for the shirt and boots and beard extensions to arrive on time.. :S >_<

even though as tonight proved, none of the above are necessary...heck, apparently a costume isn't even necessary!!!

my friend has been "getting used to" his wig so he's been wearing it out and about EVERYWHERE for the past two days. we went to the cinema to get our tickets tonight and of course he wore it. sans hat. with a grey fur-lined abercrombie sweater and jeans....

everyone who was outside ( at least 50 people..the early shows had just gotten out ) turned and stared. on teenager yelled " ITS JACK SPARROW!! " and it turned into a wave of echos of that and " IT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIM! " and girls trying to catch their breath between "omgz! " ROFL then they started " arrrr!"-ing at him and following us, though keeping their intimidated distance. uproars of "pirates!! its jack!! PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN! " and random cheers of " YOURE AWESOME! I LOVE YOU JACK! " followed us as we left, too. :|

one kid just went " HEY! YOURE JACK SPARROW! ....... :D ................... :D............. JACK spARROW! ......... :D " and walked looking behind him at us....well...him.

i have this awful gut feeling that im going to be assumed as Elizabeth on thursday night. ( im not a huge lizzie fan >_< )... at least until after the movie. Har har har.

Lime:

That's awesome. :D

I got a bit of flack yesterday for wearing my pirate boots out on the town (cause we left in a hurry and them things are a bitch to get on and off), but nobody realized that they were shoes with boot-covers on, so I'm happy.
^_^

I wish I could remember what costume you said you were doing (all I can remember is the Jack sparrow talk O_o). If you're not doing one, then it might not be that bad to be assumed as an Elizabeth. Then you can get into the photos as well and keep people mostly off of your friend.
^_~

If the wig's made out of the same stuff that the Tia Dalma wig PL4M bought is made of, then you can easily use one of the dreads for the Jack Sparrow beard extensions (unwind one dread to make two extensions). The material is very similar to the crepe wool hair that I use.

If the shirt doesn't come in you can get a very over-sized dress shirt (from like a thrift store or something), and attack it (Jack doesn't have frilly cuffs so you're lucky).

The only thing that I can't come up with a true solution for are the boots. I hope those come in for ya, but if they don't then you might have to make some boot covers. Here's a link (http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa102000a.htm) to a boot-cover tutorial that I found online. It's pretty simplistic, but it gets the basics down. I can see that they don't do anything for support, so you might want to get some boning and run it up the back and front seams so that the boots don't droop to much.
^_^;

I hope that is of some help.

Limeyaku

thank you dragonmun!!!

that is what we are planning to do for the shirt. didnt think of that for the extensions though. again, its not a HUGE deal since his facial hair grows exactly the same as depps its still immediately recognizable. im not too sure what the wig dreads are made out of as we had it custom made from an ebay seller. its absolutely perfect and fantastic quality. an unbelievable purchase, really. Yordreem is INSANELY talented. i dont think we'd want to destroy even the smallest piece of it though for something as minor as the beard extensions.

i might make some last minute boot covers if need be, so thank you tons for the link!!

and yeah, i am making a costume for myself. Giselle's dress. :D

of course, like i said, theres no doubt anyone will recognize me as Giselle.... the girl that slaps him, maybe...but AFTER the film i'm sure i'll be just fine. ;D

hahaha i love seeing people wear parts of their pirate costumes out!!! i wish i had something more piratey than strumpety so i could do the same. boooo!

Well, today I painted my pistol...

...that sorta sounds... wrong... for some reason....

Er... Today I gave my Zizzle CJS flintlock a paint job. Looks sooooo much better it's not even funny. I didn't go to the extent as some others like filling in holes or adding weight, I just painted it. Looks pretty good being that I've never really painted something like this before. I wish I had pics, but my camera is dead right now... :( <sad>

Well, I had some fun with shoe polish today too. My brown leather boots are now nice and dirty looking. Much more piratey. In general this time around I'm putting a lot of care in to looking much more grungy pirate in both the clothes and makeup (Thanks for the tips guys/gals btw).

Yeah, I did a test tun today. Meaning I put on my costume to see what I look like these days...

And I'm seriously flabbergasted on how much of a difference the changes I've made to the costume have done. Despite the fact I don't exacly have JD's er.. figure... (not to mention I have braces.. eech!)... I somehow manage to look freakishly like him. It's weird, I can't even explain how it's remotely possible. O.o

Our cosplay group for AWE is gonna rock. We're gonna look AWEsome!

Hmm...

See AWE at 8 AND 12, but lose "cosplay goof around" time?

or wait patiently to see AWE at 12 only and "cosplay goof around" for longer...

Hmmm... later option sounds more fun... Yikes! You know I'm obsessed with cosplaying if it's even a question to WAIT to see AWE! I need to have my head examined... or drink less rum or something...

GAH! Now I even suggested to drink less rum! What the heck is wrong with me! ;)

Okay back to something relevant to Cosplaying Pirates characters.

I've been told numerous times that I should come up with an array of poses that are recognizable as the characters mannerisms, or something that they might do, but without props and/or something to lean on it seems that Will doesn't really have anything other than standing there looking confused.

So I decided to do a google search and found this (http://blog.tp.org/stacy/archives/piratekitty.jpg), which is cute, but doesn't really help (the kitten is laughing at me). I don't have any screen capping abilities as I don't actually own any of the movies anymore and image searches aren't pulling up anything without lethal props.

Any suggestions?

This was a meet up for Marty Klebba's charity CODA-Coalition for Dwarf Advocacy. Unfortunately Marty Klebba was dehydrated and not feeling well and Issac Singleton was still under contract with "The Mouse" for another engagement. <hint hint...think about it>

Lee Aurenberg game my son a rather loud Pintel like "Ello poppet!" and he giggled like crazy. I also got a "Good job on the costume, mate!" from him as well and other said actors. All in all they were great people and very nice to spend 6 hours (originally scheduled for 2) to take pics and sign autographs for a great charity.

I've got a few friends at Disney that told me that they're already working on something for it, and that it's going to be a prequel kind of thing orienting themselves around the Jack Sparrow Books (http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Caribbean-Sparrow-Coming-Storm/dp/1423100182), but I can only take that with a grain of salt as I don't actually have access to the Disney Staff newsletter. What kind of is keeping me on the believing end of the whole topic are the news snippits (http://movies.ign.com/objects/859/859550.html) at IGN.

*shrugs* I'll just wait for the casting calls for extras to come back around and then drag my friends kicking and screaming to it since they all didn't believe me about the last one (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_movies_blog/casting_calls/index.html) happening. >_>

GG! Yes I handstitch all my leather and many people tell me I am insane BUT I do this in order to make it more authentic! Besides they didn't have leather sewing machines back in the 18th century...or maybe they did? Plus I cannot afford a heavy duty sewing machine although I saw one on ArrBay for $75.00. Currently watching!

I guess the stitch depends upon what you are working on. For belt trims like I have been doing for the last year I use what is called a Saddle Stitch. It can be done with one long piece of line or some people use two pieces with two needles.

I found this PDF document that describes the different types of stitches and what they can be used for. It also has some pictures to go with each stitch.

This is also a very helpful website:

That's cool. Depending on who's staying on, then it might not be a sequel sort of thing. I just hope that Disney doesn't do it's patented "beating of a dead horse" if you know what I mean.

That could be fun, but don't stress yourself out. If you don't have time to change between shows then save it. Don't forget also that you might want to schmooze with the peeps at the theater in character as well.

Wediznutt:

you've done a fair amount of work using celluclay...is it possible for it to be smooth? and would it work with a mold? is it pretty sturdy?? do you see where I'm possibly going with this?

I tried that black teeth stuff last night with the whole make-up. It looks really good. The wig also looks a little better than before but still a little puffy.

When I went to Downtown Disney last night after work, the pirate section was completly packed of people buying the stuff there. They also have Tia's necklace, but I like mine better. I am still looking for the action figure of her.

It's not really cosplay related but it's a hilarious Pirates of the Caribbean Spoof done by Toby Markham aka Sithcamaro. It just too funny. Check it out and don't forget to vote 4 it too!

Celluclay was one of my great discoveries in this costuming realm! It is fairly lumpy but over time I noticed that if you keep kneading it like dough it will get more and more clay like. It can be smoothed out using your fingers and a little bit more water as you would smooth out regular clay. Once dry it also can be sanded with sandpaper.

The drying process can be tricky. My shrunken head started to mold as I air dried it so I put said head in our gas oven and set it to about 100 degrees and left him in there for about an hour...periodically checking. He dried out nicely.

When he was finished and painted he became extremely sturdy. My last outing at the Disney Ultimate Fan Event I forgot he was hanging from my baldric and I quickly stood up from the theater seat and wham! He was snagged on the chair between the cushion and the armrest! Cr@ppacino I yelled and immediately inspected him! Not a scratch!!!

You can use Celluclay in molds with no problem. Be sure to mix the water and powder really well. Also you can make imprints into the celluclay as well to get a nice impression finish!

Hope that helps!

Using with push molds...probably similar!

HAH! I bet I know what you are doing with your belt! I started making my Captain Sao Feng leather neck armor because my beard braids weren't going well and I thought that Celluclay is the perfect material to make all that metal on his armor! Great minds think alike!!!!!:crylaugh:

Wediznutt, I was looking at your diagram of how to tie Jack's sash, Is the pocket sewn into yours or do you just fold it into it?

Scurvy dog...shipmate! No I create the pocket portion in the sash. Since my sash is three pieces joined together the first ironed seam is folded under the loop. Hides it nicely.

I have modified the bitter end portion of the shorter piece. Rather than going under and over I go over and under....make sense. The purpose of going over and under is so that the end of the sash pulls against the area past the loop!

If this doesn't make sense I will redo the diagram and post later.

Out of curiousity, what Asian-esque/Singapore-type things can I add to my lil Pirate. I'm going to wear her to school on Thursday {Hooray for Performing Arts magnet schools!}, which is also Activity Day, but I wanted to make it a bit more themed toward AWE. Or, at least, Asian-esque, because that seems to be an important part/location of AWE.

Sitting here dazed crosseyed and exhausted I finally have a little something to show for my work...lol...I ain't kidding when I say little...I finished my version of Sao Feng's jade necklace...it isn't grand or great, however I feel pretty good about it considering I've never worked with leather string, tied knots or made jewelry before...so here it is (though it needs to be weathered):

stitching the pendant to the cord:
http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/SESaccessories/saofeng80001.JPG

http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/SESaccessories/saofeng80003.JPG

I totally forgot to take pics of wrapping the "joint" and then the red addition (yes I know more than likely, again, I did this the hard way)...and here's the final piece minus weathering:

http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/SESaccessories/saofeng80004.JPG

http://usera.imagecave.com/anovelich/SESaccessories/saofeng80005.JPG

I used a larger thread so it would actually grip the darn polymer jade stone...I also cheated and used some glue to secure the back of the wrapped "joint" and the red doodly bobber thingy and a few strands to the "stone". I used tutorials from this site (monkeys fist knot for the stone and the necklace knot for , well, the necklace):
http://knopen.ismijnhobby.nl/frames/homepage_frame_eng.html

I'm sure a lot of detail is missing and a lot of stuff is wrong but at this point...I'm happy....now what's the best way to age this sucker without ruining it??

Hah, well my belt is done. I had to get a bit creative when it came to dyeing the thing though, for I didn't have time to get over to our tandy leather factory. Me Mom thought it would work if we used brown shoe polishes and various other products. And though it doesn't give a very even stain by any stretch of the imagination (in fact in most cases it would probably be considered a "cosplay disaster") I think it gives it a very rough and tough dirty look. I thnk people will think I just have a really weathered sea worthy pirate belt, rather than a belt with a cruddy dye job. :P

Vest and NEW shirt are drying after a tea soaking. And I realized after doing so much other costume stuff I've come to realize we never made a proper pair of CJS breeches. So obviously I don't have enough time to make those, but I'll be getting some pants in the CotBP gray color and tea dye that aswell.

I doubt any of the passers by will be like... HEY! HIS PANTS AREN'T ACCURATE!!! It's still kinda funny how you can be so close to perfection... yet so far.

I think it's great how many people are dressing up for the premiere! You know, Jack Sparrow can't be everywhere, so he needs his "helpers" like Santa does.

Bring the toy version I figure. Though the blade is not sharp, I'm sure the theater will probably give you flack over it. Not to mention, crowded theater, big pointy object... doesn't sound like a good mix. :P

I myself am avoiding this all together for in CotBP he goes without a baldric quite regularly... so I'm just not worrying about the sword or baldric. :toothy: I will have the pistol however. I made sure to keep the orange tip on it just in case anybody questions it... but I doubt they will.

Heh, well, I myself have four functional pockets on my waistcoat/vest. But perhaps you could have a pouch tied to your belt to store your things? It would just look like you carry treasure around with you or something, perhaps you could sneak in a couple of coins in there if anyone asks you what's inside?

Not movie accurate, but desperate times call for desperate measures! :)

As far as the sword questions......I would call and ask. The El Capitan didn't have any policy for regular showings of DMC last year. One guy walked into the theater with a real hook on his hand since he was Cap'n Hook.

As for special events like the POTC Marathon, we got a flier with our tickets specifically saying NO WEAPONS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE THEATER. We have to check them in at security thus the plastic sword becomes the primary weapon! STOW YE WEAPONS says I!

Cameras will be allowed though since they will have props from the AWE movie on display!

Oh awesome!

... could I ask for a small favor? Could you get some random photos of the Niagara falls complex (only if you have a digital camera and some space to spare)? I've actually got a minor illustration project involving the falls and I can't seem to get any really good reference photos for anything involving the tourists area. All I ever can find are aerial shots of the falls themselves, which doesn't give me much to work with.

This post might sound lame so bear with. I couldn't get my hands on tickets to the marathon or event at the El Capitan tomorrow, so I might have to make do with wearing my costume to the local theater in Burbank. Mostly because
1. I don't own a digital camera
2. I didn't really get started until about 2 weeks ago with most effort in the last few days
3. It's a good thing I didn't post mask pictures because I totally redid the mask. It isn't as big as the "real" thing though- because it would be too heavy to support its own weight- but I am thinking about modifying it a little before A-kon if I have the time.

Just got back from seeing the movie and WOW OH WOW... that was an INCREDIBLE movie!

And I want Elizabeth's awesome captain costume, the one she's wearing in this pic: http://www.costumersguide.com/potc3/bts14.jpg

I know that's gonna be a hard one but I'm determined, I WANT that costume!! guess I'm gonna have to improve my skills but fast ;)

Oh my God that movie and the whole marathon experience was just like mind blowing. i can't believe that i got in after all that. Seeing all three movies though together made the experience of being in costume and with like fans better. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

@ Knit Chick: I posted a slew of high def pics of that costume a few pages back. I also think costumer's guide (www.costumersguide.com) has them as well. Good luck! I like that costume as well, and it defys my skill level. XD

Gonna see the movie sometime over the weekend. ^_^

Oh my god my head.
*faceplants*

for those of you who got sleep over the last couple of days envy you. I went to the Thursday night showing and then had to get up 3 hours later to be at Disney for the second meet-up. Then I stayed up till 3 seeing the movie again.

I didn't drink a dern thing but I've got the worst hangover ever. X'D

It's all good though. I had fun.

I'll admit that after this movie I feel slightly vindicated for my choice in costume. I was actually kind of worried that Will would end up being a character that everyone grew to dislike, but like... yeah. that was awesome.
^_^

Something weird with this whole thing though was the people that ended up giving me coins. Did anyone else that went to the Orlando Downtown Disney showings get confronted with the bible thumpers that were handing out ten commandment coins? I think that they were targeting the people dressed up as pirates cause I didn't hear about them bothering anyone else.

For that matter did anyone who went to the Waterford showings get a replica of the movies East India trading company coins? We stopped a lady after the movie to get a pictures of us in front of one of the set and she flicked the coin right at me, took the pictures, and literally vanished in the moment it took for me to answer a question for a friend. It was weird... but cool.

I'll be posting pictures later today. I just gotta find where I put the camera after getting home last night. X'D

I guess I'm gonna have to go sneak off in the middle of the week without kiddies to see it...husband? what husband?? lol...girl time...anything objectionable or scary for itty bittys?

Well... it is rated PG13 for a reason. ^_^;

your coins story is fascinating not to mention...well darn it...very cool actually! I'd personally would love to have one of those EITC coins!!

LOL...well here's a bit o' news...or FIY actually, they can rate a movie PG-13 if someone is simply smoking in it...LOL kid you not...no sex no swearing or mild anyways but a single cigarette will turn a PG into PG-13....funny no?

ah well needed "only time" anyways....

so I'm making progress on my costume right now...no pics yet....taken just not up...doing everything the hard way (stupid me)..:bigtu:

Further addition to the story: I cut my finger drilling a hole into it so I can add it to my necklace. ;p

I didn't even know that they made the things. I just ended up with one (mines gold in color, but that's okay. They made silver Aztec coins.). O_o

Edit: Haha! Turns out that they were based of real coins, were referred to as "pieces of eight" because they were the value of eight "reals" - a type of Spanish currency.

Hehe awesome.

I actually didn't know that. There are parts in the movie though that made me glad that I didn't bring my nephews, so I wouldn't recommend bringing small kids to it.

I saw the movie on Thursday night at 10:00 pm. Lots of people dressed as Pirates and wenches.....but I was the only Jack, they let us into the theater a good hour and a half before the show because they had 2 more lines forming outside. I swaggared into the theated and everyone started yelling, OMG ! Johnny Depp is here, and the next think I knew I was up infront of the screen with a line all around the theater of people wanting pictures with me.
I posed for well over 100 photos.

Oh my gosh! looks like it was an absolute blast! and its freakish how much a girl can look like Orlando:woah: did a great job...

ouch...well at least you have an awesome souvenir from the night! and those oopsies are sometimes worth more down the road...

I kinda heard there are a few scenes that are a bit *intense* and not for the younger set...that is excellent that you at least watched the film before the nephews see it so you can let their folks know whats up (if they weren't there)...

Hehe... well yeah. I've been a Star Wars fan since my parents used it as a electronic babysitter for me and my brother. X'D

I can't say that I've seen the new pirates movies as a modern day version of anything, but thats how I am. I'm so bad at placing movies with other movies that sometimes I don't realize one is the sequel to another (like I didn't figure out that Man in the Iron mask was a sequel to three Musketeers until my friend told me. X'D)

Hey man! congratulations! That's a great curse to break. ^_^

I know what you mean about the after effects though. It seems like we spent so long preparing for something that went by so fast it was almost unrewarding. It's like we missed something and need to make up for it.

The Pirates and Princess party might help with that feeling, but at the same time It feels like that's so far away.

Because a friend of mine missed out on the gathering, I kind of want to host a photo shoot, but the only idea that I have that would make it worth the effort is one on the beach...

... or actually my idea was an island on the intercoastal (cause those look like the islands in the movie), but that requires a boat and all I have is a large canoe. The beach was the next best choice because my idea would probably end up requiring me to ferry people from the parking area to the island unless someone else had a boat.

Yay... looking for boats.

Oh Yeah! that reminds me. I had this weird as hell dream last night that I think you guys might appreciate. you can check it out here (http://dragonmun.livejournal.com/150650.html) if you'd like (posted in LJ because this post is long enough).

some folks use what is that? uhm wool crepe that you find at your local theatrical store...some have even talked about making a latex (if you're not allergic) "appliance" where you attach hair or rather make a "piece" and then glue it on and blend it in...hmm...good question though...

The king and his men...-continues singing-

AWE was amazing. o.o I didn't get to go at 8, 'cause the parental took it away, but I saw it on Saturday. ZOMGZOMGZOMG. It was just that amazing. We went camping, so we saw it in this small-town theater. I wasn't expecting as many people to be in it as there were. It was nearly full. Also, I was in costume. I did get some weird looks, but I shrugged them off. :]

I like Will's AWE costume more than DMC or CBP. And I think this may be my favorite in the installements. I love Lizzie's outfit too. And that was, by far, the best wedding ceremony I've ever seen.

And I'm totally licking a rock one day.

I got my crepe wool hair (Ben Nye (http://www.bennyemakeup.com/) brand) at Pizzazz Theatrical (http://madgeelainesworld.com/) (formerly Madge Elaine's World), but I'll have to admit that you might be able to order the same stuff online and not have to wait as long as it would take to order from them if they don't have any.

Dragonmun, your Will turned out great, and Limeyaku, I love your dress and Jack! That Barbossa is pretty cool too.

Don't you think my dad looks like Bill Nighy here? - http://pics.livejournal.com/justawench/pic/000pewwa
Of course, I may be biased. NeonHurricane, I made his beard, which you can see well in that pic, out of crepe wool. It was pretty easy to work with.

We weren't ready to let go of Jack even after dressing up on Thurs. and Fri., so we had a little photoshoot yesterday. DH reenacted some scenes from the film. Um, rated PG-13, I guess due to smoking. ;P

Wowzers your Dad looks totally like Bill Nighy! Great job on the costumes!

Just curious, after seeing the pics... are there any things on me Jack costume that particularly stick out as needing improvments to you guys? Just wondering, for currently the costume is relatively accurate, but sometimes you need to cheat it a bit to "sell" the look more. Just lookin' for opinions.

As a note I don't intend on turning it into the AWE/DMC look just yet.

Careful, NeonHurricane, someone might think you're compensating for something.

There's way too many things to say to this... :P

Hello people! I've always wanted to have an account here but I never thought I was worthy enough..until today I decided what the heck. For those of you that went to the premiere I was the redhead. A bit of back story with our costumes. So at first I was going to be Ana Maria and my boyfriend was going to be jack (we figured we could tease any Jack's by going "yeah jack...that's why YOU didn't see me in the second movie) but our plans fell through after our costumes fell apart because of random events that are far too complex. I managed to still make a sort of makeshift Ana Maria costume but it wasn't good enough to my liking he had decided to go as the auctioneer while I kept whining I wanted to be Ana Maria...obviously he won.

Either way it was a lot of fun and yes i experienced the bible thumpers...we escaped them...the funny thing is my boyfriend saw the coin bit on it made a face and then handed it to me and I shrugged my shoulders and put it down my shirt...without realizing it had the ten commandments on it...

That freakin pencil trick was stupid anyways.

Wow, you have alot of cool pics.

Well for the past three days, I haven't had any sleep. Thursday, I rushed from work to the premiere to meet up the rest of the gang. Disnay all day on Friday, but too tired to watch the movie again that night. Saturday and Sunday, watched the movie 2 times for free. I met the Jack that contacted me on myspace. I was so amazed that he built the Tia Dalma shack himself. (it is the set with Dragonmun in it) I will post pics later.

And now I am finding a date for Pirate and Princess Party for us to go together.

Not entirely true! We had to change our breeches, add another belt, add trinkets, paws, change baldrics, possibly add more dreadlocks to wig, and add "mom"............

I was planning this change but we didn't have enought time inbetween movies just to see the props, make it to the store, and get food!!! By the end of AWE I really had to get to the little pirates room in a hurry! Try getting out of drop front breeches in a hurry!!!!:crylaugh:

Hey! I remember your crew! I was hoping to get some photos but I recall you folks were ALWAYS on the move.......costume changes I believe!

We were sorta always moving! But hey, we were exploring. I saw some of your photos while running around the site earlier. ^.^

But... did you have to make A LEATHER COAT!? lol Yeah... that coat... stole my soul. I do appreciate the fact of changing costume parts (my best friend and other dearest friend) are Jack cosplayers (the Captains Jack from Rum Party). But, there has been top-to-bottom revision of Will's costume for each movie... *sigh* Penny Rose making it ever harder to re-create his costume.

BUWAHAHAHAHAAA!!! *faceplants*

I'm sooooo... glad I'm not the only one who thought that. X'D

Oh that reminds me.

Neon. Feel special! Them beard extensions are the last Jack Sparrow extensions I'm going to make ever! I ran out of beads. ;p

Back to topic: I wish that I still had my second movie Will costume (cause I'd have done that again cause I is lazy), but I had to give that back. Perk of working @ costume shop was renting... not owning. *cries*

Aw I know how that goes. I've done that for another costume of mine a few months back from my college's shop. *sigh* I miss shops... with industrial machines.... *daydreams for a moment* I love your costumes. Its so funny because there are so few Will cosplayers out there that I think I can name all of us at least by screen name or by strange title that I illude to them as. You are Florida Will. Because, well, you are in Florida, are you not?

Hehe yup. I'm in Florida. :D

Florida Will... I like that. It sounds like the beginning of a potentially dangerous sentence (I can make fun of my state for years no matter how much I love it). I'm really weird apparently though. I mean. I'm a chick cosplayer, but I keep referring to you as "Chick Will" when you happen to come up in conversation (usually something about us wondering what you do for a beard).

That brings up something kind of funny that I've noticed, which is that there are significantly more female cosplayers in our minority than there are male. What's up with that?

He actually does do leather work. He was showing us the progress of a Baldric he made for a different Jack Sparrow earlier in the thread. ^_^;

[QUOTE=Dragonmun;1903874]Thank ya. ^.^

Your Davy Jones turned out great! How much crepe wool did you end up using? How did you mount it?
QUOTE]

I used nearly a yard of the braid. I ordered two, because I thought I would have to make the wig as well, but it turned out I had some hair lying around that nearly matched.

I took some gauze and painted it with latex as a base. I unbraided the hair and dampened it and hung it up to take some of the kink out. Then I cut lengths, split them into 3 or four pieces and glued them in rows on the gauze. I used a piece for each cheek, one for the chin, and one for the moustache. I pulled some of the wool off of the ends, so they wouldn't be blunt and they'd have a more natural taper. Once I applied those to his face, I glued some bits right to his face to hide the edges and create a little soul patch.

It could have been better, but I only had a really poor pic to go by, and I couldn't even tell he had beads in his beard.

Who knows. I've been spoiled with a large crew of men in the Rum Party Crew. In fact, the women are out numbered. And as for the beard - a strange secret from me to you (and anyone else reading this thread) its my own hair and spirit gum. o.O

I know that there's a method out there involving netting that allows the beard to be reusable, which is neat. Does the gauze allow for the same?

And hey. no one's holding the beads against ya. I had a hard time finding good pictures of Will's costume for a long while (thank you gods for this thread. I'd have died otherwise), so it's totally understandable that you wouldn't be able to find a good reference for human Jones. ^_~

Random other question (cause it's really nice to talk to someone else in the same position), do you have problems with scaring people because a girly voice is coming out of what appears to be a dude? That's driving me nuts and occasionally forces me to whisper to people >_>

But... did you have to make A LEATHER COAT!?

Does making five leather baldrics and two more count? Four Captain Jack Sparrows, two Elizabeth Swann's and one "whelps". The last PES and "whelp" baldrics will be completed before Pirates N Princesses in WDW.

Also making "mom" Sparrow took forever considering most CJS cosplayers bought theirs off of ArrrBay! JustAWench is an exception!

I really hope Penny Rose is nominated for an Academy Award for Costumes this year! I was shocked that I was the only one clapping for her when her name showed up on the big screen after each movie! No one else appreciated her work!!!:lost:

Holy (@&$ yeah that's plenty. O.o Bravo. I'm in the process of making my baldric. I'm familiar with leather work of that kind, I just need to get my hands on the buckle. I may end up casting it myself. I don't know yet. Awesome stuff you've got there, btw. And yes, Penny Rose should be nominated or... I will be very very very cross. Very very... Well you get the point. The ammount of work she puts into her costumes is above and beyond all imagining until you analyze the crap out of her stuff. Then you see it. And wow.

Woah really? That sucks. (on the hair) When i'm too lazy to glue, I use mascara on the faint little whisps of hair that I have.

The voice thing I've learned to get over. I'm also an actor in training so I have been given the ability to manipulate my voice. I'm working on being an audio double for Will for any sort of crazy recordings we need for Rum Party. I hide my voice when not speaking like Will. The most awkward one is bathrooms when people at the con have had a bet running weather I'm a guy or a girl. Then I show up in my Lara Croft costume ;)

Alright I have been all over simplicity.com and specifically looking for an Asian or Chinese robe pattern similar to Captain Sao Feng. Most of the patterns I have found are too short and come down only to mid calf. I plan on making this out of faux silk since that would be just a wee bit too expensive.

Can anyone here that is familiar with any of the Simplicity patterns point me in the right direction?

I would suggest modifying 3772 (costumes: fantasy, cultural). *shrug* I only know a bit about buying patterns, but that would be my best bet should I buy one.

okie dokie stokie...it is always possible to lengthen a pattern you can use as the whelp said (hee hee) simplicity 3772 and modify it (I'm doing, have been doing for 2 months, don't ask)...however because his coat isn't necessarily fitted you can always use folkwear pattern #114 which would be your bestest most accurate bet...

http://www.folkwear.com/asian.html

...their patterns are historically accurate and moderately easy to make...you'd only have to lengthen the hem... good grief man...I live a couple hours north...gather some other cosplayers besides wifey and I'll teach you how to do it! lol...oh and I already have the pattern too *heehee*...:toothy:

Oh dude! That's awesome! Lemme know when you get some recordings. I would like to hear them. :D

I've tried deepening my voice, but I seem to only be able to bounce between extremes. I can either sound like a girl (normal) or something along the lines of Nathan Explosion from Metocalypse (that's brutal). Maybe someday I can figure out an in-between, but aside from My Flag costume I don't have a definite reoccurring reason to do so.

HAH! When I first started out I sounded like Austin Powers! YEAH BABY...YEAH!

What really helped me out is to listen to key lines out of the movie over and over and just practice to imitating those lines.

I'm Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

You look familiar have I threatened you before?

Obviously you've never been to Singapore!

When hubby starts getting better try:

Well, then, I confess, it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out!

Apparently there?s some sort of high toned and fancy to do up at the fort, eh? How could it be that two upstanding gentlemen such as yourselves did not merit an invitation?

What also helped me is slightly slurring the speech (rum)! Once I put in my gold teeth it really worked out perfect because said faux teeth really helped me to slur the speech, savvy?

You can buy the fake gold clip ons from like eBay at ThugFashion for about $20.00. It helped me until I could afford the more comfortable version.

In a related story, Ive heard Wedizinutt, and can vouch for his authenticity at the voice. I could only giggle. :bashful:

When my dad first started trying he sounded like Ringo from the Beatles. he started saying 'Come to join me crew lad, welcome aboard!' over and over and hes got it down for the most part now, sometimes a little ringo slips out...

Wedizinutt!! Great pics!!! And so glad to see you wearing the coat! It looked really great! I imagine it was rather hot though... :angel2:

Ive seen it 4 times now. The whole davy/tia thing is now so much clearer, as is wills fate.

In other news I have been hired by Creative Arts Inc. as a costumer. Wedizinutts coat helped me land that deal, and soon you'll be seeing my creations in libraries and museums around the country! Neat eh?

Everyone looks soooo good! And I wish I had more pics to post, but honestly my family was so busy taking pictures with other folks, we didnt have much time to take some of ourselves.

I did, actually encounter my first mean person while in costume, and I admit, I was really down about it. This guy was flat out rude to me. And I defended myself well, but there was just no excuse.

Here are pictures from the last couple events. The Hernando Desoto Musuem, and the 8:00 showing. More pics soon!

hmm well I met a sculptor a few weeks ago who said he might have some work for me (thanks craigslist!). And once I met him he loved me, (hes married, in a costuming sense) and wanted to meet his boss, and the creator of these projects.

My first project is a 14 ft lizard. lol. It needs a quilted slip cover, its complicated, and along with that and a few other projects, not to mention endless projects after that... right now it should be worth about $10,000 till the end of the year. And thats not counting the comissions ive picked up along the way or halloween, and for random people on the internet. And ebay. Right now im up to me arms in pajama pants. (interested, anyone? lol) Anyway, thats my commission. And i must say im THRILLED and proud of myself!
