If we go this will be our first time attending AUSA, and just wondering how big it usually gets?
Like is it more like AnimeBoston? or katsucon?

Not nearly as big as either of those. Last year AUSA t'was 'round 3,000 people, give or take a couple hundred. I expect due to its growing popularity, it'll be a bit bigger this year, perhaps in the 4,000s.

Yeah, it's a very small con, but personally, I think that's what makes it so great.
I'm sad it's starting to get bigger =b

It's a smaller con, but the atmosphere is definetely more inviting at AUSA....I've never ever met a rude cosplayer there, where as at big cons (Like Otakon), you have the misfortune of running into quite a few egotistical jerks.
It's a nice con to start out on, if it's your first anime convention, and especially if you're new to cosplaying. The Masq is very well organized (and very fair), and the Hall Contest, as far as I can tell, is equally as excellent.
I'm trying to come back this year (2005 was my first AUSA), and hold a panel, actually.
It's definitely a smaller con, but the Sheraton is also a smaller hotel, so it feels just as crowded as, say, Katsucon and such. But AUSA is definitely my favourite con. It's smaller, all in one hotel, and it's much easier to run into friends and socialize. The masq is, by far, the most organized I've ever taken part in, and the coordinators are very helpful and friendly.
