I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas on making a decent Totoro costume--mascot style. I don't want to make an 'improvised' version of it.

You're gonna make a full-size version? Good for you. I've considered Totoro for my next mascot cosplay, but I've opted for a different mascot to do. For Totoro, I thought it'd be necessary to make a flexible "cage", like the staves of a barrel, to help the mascot keep that round shape. Once you've got that, it's just a matter of laying foam and fur on top to finish the costume. One concern I had, for making a big Totoro (about 8-9'), is that your eyes would be on the level of the chevrons on his chest, which would make it hard to see. If you wanted, you could try making a periscope to his nose/mouth, but that might not work well. The other way around that problem would be to make a human-sized Totoro; that way you could see out of his face, but then I think your shoulders wouldn't line up with his. It's a somewhat bothersome problem.
But I wish you luck!
