View Full Version : Kingdom Hearts Cosplay -- Just Square?

Okay, so here's the thing. My cosplay club is planning on a Kingdom Hearts-cosplay group at this year's Gameworld. (No, you don't know that con, it's not in the States.) But I personally resent this \-_-/ much Disney-cosplay, and PERSONALLY I wouldn't approve. Of course, we'll discuss this within the club, but I'd like some global opinions too on the matter.
Would it be terribly wrong and cruel and just nada if we would cosplay ONLY Square's characters, i.e. not the Disney ones? Not ANY Disney ones, not even Jane and such "normal" characters? (Only Square's characters would then of include the Heartless too.)
//As a sidenote, Kingdom Hearts really has made cosplay difficult. ^_^

I would like to do a human looking Goofy. I just gotta figure out what he would look like.

Well, some of the Disney characters were redesigned by Tetsuya Nomura....so does that still disqualify them? And I think that all Square characters would be fine, nothing wrong with that....
I agree with you about no Disney characters, but it is kinda hard to cosplay KH without them, since they do suit half the game. ^-^;; It's a tough call. I'd say, see how the rest of the club reacts - try to suade them to all the other great Square costumes (I'd LOVE to see some nice Heartless costumes) and if they refuse terribly, then I guess you have no choice. o.o;;

That is seriously the coolest variation of Donald I've ever seen. XD Donald's such a twit in KH. *hugs* He's the only Disney character I really like. Mostly because he's angry. XD

Well this is the clubs descsion. I would say if someone is dead set on being Donald or Jane then don't look down on them. But, if you can state your case adult like and explain why you think Disney Cosplay is not the same as "Square Cosplay". The disney characters are a part of the game and not too many with the exception of Donald, Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy were really redesigned for the game.
Ultimatly you can't decide for people what they cosplay as. There are more than enough square chracters to go around....

Mmm....Disney makes up nearly half if not all of the game, Kingdom Hearts. I mean yes, there are the heartless and what not, but even the different stages are ALL disney. I guess to me, taking any sort of Disney cosplay out of a Kingdom Hearts cosplay isn't fair. We have a rather large group for a Kingdom Hearts photoshoot group at Otakon and there's a large amount of Disney characters in it.

Kellie- I am glad that I am not the only one that feels that way. I am going to try to make it to Otakon. It would be wonderful to see a giant group of KH lovers!
Basically Vinya- Be diplomatic but don't be a cosplay dictator and tell people, "No! you can't cosplay as that character!" I am sure that things will work out and you all will look great for the con!
You said the con isn't in the states, where is it then?

Hey WOW! Thanks everyone! You really made me think about this. :D That picture that Limeyaku presented was really a kicker... It's really great! Yes, like I said, this of course will be discussed with the club members, and no, I'm not going to be a dictator. Not until I rule the world, that is. XD Yeah, umm, back on the topic, you guys have made me see the good points in Disney cosplay - thanks! ^_^v
And marsie; it's in Finland. We're planning it to be held in the same event where KH was presented last year. (Oh, but I had played it through once before that... Slowpokes! ...But then again, I got KH really fast and played it through almost in the shop... XD)
Limeyaku: Erm... that drawing you posted is by Ruaki of http://valhalla.morethanart.org/ (it's Sora with Gijinka Goofy & Gijinka Donald.) I'm not sure if she's a member of this board, but maybe you should ask her permission before you post her drawings and stuff. X_X;;
I'm not trying to be mean, by the way. Sorry if it came off like that. ^^;;

I've seen some people dress up as Kingdom Hearts Maleficent and Alice and no one thought anything weird of it. I personally thought it was really cool.

Chas/Limeyaku ~ It wasn't Limeyaku that posted the image, it was someone on CosplayLab. I went and found her profile and there's no mention of Ruaki... I hope that person got her permission, because Ruaki is a friend of mine, and that isn't cool. I'm gonna go show her. @_@

*nodnod* sorries. i just found it on cosplaylab ^_^ *slaps head* sorry sorry! fanart spreads fast on the net. o_o

PSST. she sould put a watermark in the corner! ^0^ definately needs to be credited, it's really great!

I think it's interesting they want to cosplay like her art.. but.. ehm. ^^; Credit is needed where credit is due.. or something. o_o
::nod nod:: (understands now!) Yeah, exactly! And thanks for showing Ruaki-San, Michi. She should definently know about it.

Back onto subject, I personally feel either way about this. I don't like the idea of many Tinks and Snow Whites running around Anime cons but again they are in the game. I think it's a very interesting debate.

Reva - A very interesting debate indeed! And I agree. I don't think it would be too justified if there were JUST disney characters running around without some indication of KH characters. I think if you have a Sora or a Riku or a Kairi and perhaps a disney character and a Maleficent running about (I saw a Maleficent, Kairi and Selphie at Katuscon who were awesome!) then its cool.
I'm making a Disney costume for a group. But then again, its for a large group for Kingdom Hearts. So I guess in my personal opinion, it really depends. I personally would make sure I had a KH group if I wanted to dress as Disney.

There was group of peole from Kingdom Hearts at Sakura-con this year. Large group that did Alice in wonderland was there. Everyone was just in awwww of there huge wonderland group.
Nightmare before Christmas is totally a kick ass series! A lot of people like that or big anime fans too.
I can't believe someone did Maleficent though. That must be unbelievable! She got to be my favorite disney villian.

There is one issue to be considered...
Square doesn't sue people that cosplay its characters.
Disney will. Plus, since you are part of a club, then the club as a whole could be sued, and Disney would most likely do that instead of the individual cosplayer.

I think Disney's biggest problem with it was people being mistaken for the characters that they employee in the parks. I know AX, you have to wear a special badge and ribbon to show that you are a part of the con and not Disney's cast in order to keep things legal. You're also not allowed to participate in any sort of hall cosplay contest and what not. Which all that is fine with me. I'm not into competing what not. ^^ Con's aren't not allowing it, they're just covering their rears.
