This John's costume for our Street Fighter Revival: Part Deux project. He really, REALLY wanted to do the neon green variant with pink gloves, but we talked him out of that...
Like the Evil Ryu costume, the gi is made from scratch using a Butterick pattern. I made some adjustments to the pattern by widening the front flaps so that they cross farther across John's chest and waist. I also added in the side parting at the seams, which is what a traditional gi actually has, as well as the reference art.
We originally bought a cotton suiting material with mild stretch but didn't have enough. That got used for my pink Chun Li and we bought a pink "linen-look" material that's a polyester/cotton blend. It's very light and breathes well in the heat. All the "rough jags" along the arm holes are actually stitched in pink thread, and trimmed close so that the fabric frays with control. The pant legs and other hems on the gi top are sewn by hand, as is the inside part of the neck border. I did french seams for the major straight seams (legs and side of jacket), and zigzaged the raw seam inside the crotch, to reduce fray.
I used last year's Street Fighter project patterns to make the brown gloves out of vinyl and spandex. There's a tutorial in my photos from last year for anyone interested in making them.
