Originally I was going for a Kaylee-like outfit. It's not from any specific episode. I was going for something that Kaylee would wear. I didn't feel like trying to make the exact jacket, so I made the one you see.
I debuted her at our friends' Halloween party with my then fiance as Mal (for which I made the coat that he's not wearing in the pic). We ended up getting second place overall despite the fact that only a few people knew who we were. :)
Since then I've decided to drop the jacket. Partially because at some point the sleeve got torn and I don't think I could fix it and have it still look good. At some point I'm going to make the jacket she wears in the first episode, but that's way down the line when I've got the time.
It is really hard to find a jumpsuit without buying one online that costs quite a bit. Granted they're good quality, but I didn't need something that heavy duty. Luckily a friend of mine found this one at a thrift store. I took off the sleeves, removed the shoulder pads (yes, there were shoulder pads), and took the elastic out of the waist. The rest was easy since I wasn't trying to go for any one of her jumpsuits specifically. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a few patches that seemed quite Kaylee. I'm thinking of eventually taking apart the jumpsuit and using it to make a pattern for a new one.
I have had multiple shirts for Kaylee over the years. For the first time, I simply went to Wal-Mart and got a long sleeved t-shirt in tan. I was wearing a jacket I had made over it so i wasn't aiming to have a colorful shirt the first time. The second shirt was a lucky find at Kohl's. I had a gift card and was looking for some 'work appropriate' clothing. I saw this shirt and it just screamed Kaylee. And, best of all, I can wear it to work! I love it when clothing can be used for cosplay and everyday life. The third shirt was a Christmas gift from my mom and the first thought that popped into my head was "This will look great on Kaylee". It's the same brand as shirt 2, which makes a lot of sense. Kohl's just seems to be the place for Kaylee shirts.
A friend of mine is in the National Guard and has been giving me various parts of former uniforms, including jungle boots, that are in great shape. The boots are a little big, but I'm looking into using some foam inside to get them to fit better. They have come in so handy for many cosplays. I'm going to find a pair of sandals to use as well. As fun as the combat boots can be, there are times you just want to be wearing sandals. For Dragon*Con 2011, I simply wore my everyday sandals just for comfort.
