Kenshin (Hitokiri Battousai)
Last Updated: 02-26-2005
One year prior, I had done my first cosplay: TV series Kenshin. Okay, so it wasn't the greatest and I am not a total Kenshin freak, but I am a perfectionist, so I wanted to improve it. Why not do a new kenshin for my one year cosplay anniversary? My sewing skills had improved and I had a much better idea of what to do and expect.
I made the tabi, kimono/gi, under kimono, hakama, and arm cover thingies. Shaved my chest. Used the sandals from last year.
The swords are not totally accurate. The sheaths are a little too big. They are entirely made of red oak from the blades to the sheaths. I think that I need to find a better top-coat finish as the one I used started to wear off after one day of usage.
The wig is a Godiva-type wig. I had planned on having it cut at a salon as I did for the last Kenshin. However, I ran out of time and none of the salons that I checked were available on the day I wore the costume. DAMN! So I cut it myself in a real hurry. Turned out okay, but I missed the photoshoot. I was not satisfied, but I actually received some compliments on it, so maybe it's not so bad.
Finally, the scar. I went for the still bleeding single cut using a red pencil, rigid collodion, and stage blood. Turned out fairly well. Well enough that some drunkards (had to be!) on the corner of Pratt and Charles (?) called 911 for me despite my pleas to the contrary. Fortunately, they realized what was what and ran away embarrassed. I think that they actually were sincere.
Overall, a great cosplay experience.
I really wanted to "finish" this costume. I recently made slightly more authentic tekko. Unfortunately, the wig does not fit well any more with all of my real hair underneath; plus it was horribly tangled after the first use. After having worn kenshin costumes three times, people seem to see me as "the dude who is always kenshin".
Time to move on :/
