I used red stretchy vinyl for the majority of the costume, which is based on the manga. It wasn't easy to work with, if I messed up it left holes on the fabric. However, I was able to make a pattern out of muslin before making the cut for the jacket. It was hard to keep the hat in place as it is on the anime, its barely on her head--had I kept it that way it would just fall over...I mean can anyone really keep their bangs out of a barrette like that? lawl
