A very intense commission from a friend...had to pull it off in two weeks. I was responsible for the bodice and wings, she made the dress. The patterns for the bodice and collar were hand-drafted in muslin and then transfered to the fabric, the pattern for the wings was drafted in poster board.
Bodice: Cotton twill solid laminated with iron-on vynl. Because garment vynl or pleather was not available, it had to be made from scratch. Piping is handmade with silver satin and filler cord, jewels are fashioned from polymer clay and acrylic gloss glaze. Back laces up, corset-style, with twelve rivets and a satin cord.
Collar: Handmade vynl, same as above. Large hook and eye clasps hold wings to collar at neck and back. Laces up with six grommets and satin cord.
Wings: The most complex piece. Process began with fourteen pieces of double-sided fusible peltex that were interfaced with cotton. That cotton was then interfaced with vynl and sewn together to create feather and shoulder portions. Next, the feathers were riveted to the shoulders using a leather hole punch and silver jean rivets. Lastly, hook and eye clasps were added at the neck and back and a strand of elastic was riveted to the underarm to hold the wings in place. The result is a light, mobile, and sturdy piece that is easily removed.
