Man, my last few costumes have all been fairly simple. The hardest part of this cosplay was, you might guess, the vest. The shirt was sewn by us; I found some great fabric at WalMart for a dollar a year. The fabric was stretchy, though, and slipped a lot, making it difficult to sew. I love the scoop collar, though, and the fact that it didn’t need to be hemmed. The jeans are from a thrift store, and are the final piece that needs completion – I’ll be adding fringe in the near future.
The vest base wasn’t too hard. I was unable to find suede when we began work, so it’s made from fleece, lined with light cotton. It’s actually very comfortable. It was simple pattern work for the vest, and then came the fun part. It took over ten yards of fur trim to trim the whole vest. Each piece was pinned, then machine sewn down the center of each piece, and then tacked down in a few places and hot glued in others to keep it in the right places. I added a little hairspray to keep the fur from going too wild. The vest is closed with ten snaps from the collar to the bottom.
The goggles were… fun. I worked them up from the same goggles I use for Reno, thus, black with black-tinted lenses. I used stained glass paint to make them yellow and used a silver paint pen for the rims. They’re… really hard to see out of. I figure it’s as close to a drug trip as I’ll ever get; everything is obviously yellow-tinted, but bubbles in the paint make things really distorted. They photograph well, though, so I do like them. The gloves are simply chemical gloves from Home Depot; I hope to get a good pair in the future, my friend owns a pair of leather fencing gloves that look perfect. I also need new boots.
So, this is my transition back into a few more difficult costumes once again. XD Not too hard, but with a few little challenges… not the least of which is actually wearing it in the Florida summer without passing out.
