Ashelia B'Nargin Dalmasca (Ashe)

Final Fantasy XII

Ashe is so pretty! I love her design, and the fact that she has a huge ass sword just made her irresistable.

The shirt was made from stretch poplin and an old bra that I murdered to get just the right shape around the bust. The gold designs are applique and the armor is all craft foam and styrene.

I get a lot of questions about how I did the shoes, and actually, they were one of the easiest parts for me! First, I bought a pair of boots in the color I wanted, I picked red Gogo boots so I would not only match the figurine, but because I like red better than hot pink. Anyway, after I had my shoes, I got some cardstock (you can also use posterboard). With my cardstock, I cut out pieces to fit around the shape of the shoe. It took a few tries to get just right, but eventually I had a cardstock version of what my armor would look like. I untaped the cardstock pattern from the shoe and traced it onto some styrene. The styrene is the visible part that you see there. Knowing that styrene is thin and doesn't have a lot of body, I backed the styrene with foamies. When everything was fully attached using some hot glue (hot glue sticks AMAZINGLY well to pvc and foamies), I used hot glue for all the raised designs on the foot armor. Once all of the detailling was done, I carefully went back and painted everything gold using Testor's metallic gold paint. Honestly, if I did it again, I'd use the FolkArt gold metallic paint, but anyway. Once everything was painted, I went back with a washcloth and some black acrylic and weathered all of it. So, the only real advice I can give for Ashe's shoe armor... Start with posterboard and tape and just keep reshaping and resizing until you get it just right. : )

The sword is made from a rake handle as a base, built up with more wood, and then finished with layers of craft foam and styrene, spray painted with metallic paint and weathered to keep it from having that "fresh out of the package" look.

My skirt and shoes I decided to do in red because I was mostly using the figurine as reference, and the figurine has her colors as being red instead of hot pink. I decided on a brighter blonde rather than the dirty blonde/brownish/greyish color that she has on the figurine because I thought it would be more flattering on my skin tone.

Overall, there was a LOT of experimenting in the construction of this costume, and I really learned a lot...Mostly how NOT to do some things next time, haha! I really enjoyed this outfit and looking back, I'm glad I did her, but there are so many things I would change and do differently now, if I were to do it all again.

And I've finally gotten over my phobia of posting horrid pictures from 2007... Back before I knew how to wear makeup! Ick! Just shows how my makeup skills have (hopefully?) improved in the past 4 years!
