Description

After Halloween 2006, I had a Satyr costume that I figured would sit uselessly in my closet, so I decided to put it to good use. I really liked the idea of going to my local mall as a 'Christmas Satyr' and spreading Christmas cheer, so I made some alterations to the Gangster Satyr costume. By 'alterations,' I mean I was only able to reuse the furry pants and the vest. :/

First, I remade the feet entirely. The original feet were made on a sock base with an epoxy hoof. They looked okay, but were incredibly painful to wear! The second feet were made on a high-heel boot. The heel was cut off, and a fake extension was added to the back to give my feet a longer appearance. The hoof is wood, and makes a pleasant clopping sound. I altered a robe by adding woolly trim and making a long slit in the back for my tail. It makes a nice Santa coat. A second set of horns was fit into a Santa hat I had, and I called it done. :D

Unfortunately, most people thought I was a reindeer and didn't understand the 'Christmas Satyr' concept, so it made sense to become a reindeer for the 2007 Christmas season. I altered the hat and made a set of reindeer antlers from clay, masking tape, and coat hangers. The costume was well received and I got a lot of wonderful compliments on the new antlers.

Truthfully, I'm still wasn't happy with the antlers. My roommate provided me with a small set of antlers from a white-tailed deer, and I remade the headgear a second time. This time, the antlers are mounted to a child's bicycle helmet, which is glued to the Santa hat (the same one from the original headgear- I just kept piecing it back together, sadly!). It's much more comfortable than the reindeer-antlers version, and looks fantastic. I altered the makeup to resemble a white-tailed deer and added a few things, and had a great year in 2008. :D
