My cousin Hanamaru and I both love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean so when she mentioned she was planning to make a Jolyne costume, I wanted to join her as Hermes :D The manga takes place in Florida, and that's where I live. Fun!
My costume's scheme is based off of a color manga cover, where Hermes is in shiny silver and lime green with pink armbands. 70's and futuristic? Hanamaru's colors are more original and we shared fabrics to coordinate. This was the first time I've ever worked with metallic spandex and pvc, so it was a fun learning experience. I recycled my old Itachi wig for Hermes. I added extensions to the top, built a widow's peak hairline, and made my own dreadlocks and gold pieces. I tried to add a lot of details: green pvc stripes, faux pockets, pink pvc armbands/belt, gold lettering, kiss stickers, and I even painted fake green nails with silver glitter and tiny kiss marks. I made the vector art for Jolyne's butterfly and star tattoos and she printed them on tattoo paper. We both had to apply some crazy makeup too. These costumes are super fun to wear ♥
Best In Show Overall at Metrocon 2009 Cosplay Carnevale
We were so shocked and totally not expecting an award like this at all. Our group was originally going to enter other costumes, but when friends said in advance that they might not make it to the con, we decided to just pre-register our new Jojo costumes for fun.
After our award and other prizes were announced, they surprised us with another giant prize that no one knew about in advance: an all expense paid trip to New York Anime Festival to compete in their masquerade. I've never had the chance to travel out of Florida for a convention or even been to New York before, so I am very grateful. The both of us are so extremely thankful to Metrocon, NYAF, and everyone involved for such a great opportunity!
