Because of my convention schedule and a guest appearance at San Japan, I only had five weeks in which to build this entire costume. The kimono were simple, they are standard kimono with some slight adjustment to bring up the sleeve seam, bell out the sleeves, and lengthen the train. The inner kimono is linen, the outer is some soft, thick poly fabric so the red wouldn't show through.
The sash is entirely pieced together like a quilt, even the yellow zig-zags. Took five hours one Sunday afternoon. It is wired through a pocket along the inside. Total length = 15 feet.
The staff is wood (balsa base and beads) and paperclay, with a sculpey topper and butt cap. The wings were my own design, engineered to have a spring-loaded elbow joint so that they can be pulled closed to go through doorways (and the stage curtain). They slot via dowels into mounted pipes on the under-vest, so there are only two small buttonhole openings in the back of the kimono.
