White Artbook Dress

Last Updated: 03-30-2010

I. Love. Clover. And Clover doesn't get enough love, so when london2191 sent me a batch of pictures we should cosplay, I jumped at the picture she sent me of Ora and Suu in their white and gold dresses. (With lol ridiculous wings.)

The dresses are made of asanti faille, and my dress is fully serged and finished on the inside, featuring a fully lined and boned bodice with gold trim fashioned from gold metallic spandex. I made the petticoat with a hand-gathered ruffle, and both the skirt and petticoat are worn over a 120'' circumference hoopskirt.

The wings are a combination of HCC's method for doing large angel wings and styrene, paperclay, wood, foamies, and hot glue. I weathered them really well because I prefer the worn look, especially in photographs and because I think it looks cool to see something with a bit of age to it.

As for EXACTLY how the wings were made, first of all I drew the pattern for the main wing "bone", the parts that in the end were gold, and had my dad use his awesome saw to cut them out of wood. I hot glued styrene to cover the wood and did all of the detailing in more hot glue. I primed it with a few layers of primer and painted it all gold, then weathered it with black paint and the smudging technique. Once that was done, I cut all of the wing "petals" out of the .06 styrene sheeting sold at usplastic.com. I used a Dremel to drill holds into the wood of the main wing piece, and I poked the wing petals into those holes, using epoxy glue to hold them in place.

I adore this costume, but the wings, unfortunately to my miscalculations are waaay too heavy to wear for anything other than a photoshoot. But at least they look pretty, right?
