Woohoo! Bethesda put me on their blog!
"Don't be creepy!" has kind of been my mantra for the design/construction of this costume. While Vault Boy's vault-suit is thankfully a simple design, the biggest challenge with this costume has come in trying to build the cartoonish-human-mascot head without it looking, for lack of a better descriptor, scary.
I constructed the head based upon the technique I used for my previous masks: A paper-mache and posterboard base, black semi-translucent fabric for the eyes (which I can see out of), a layer of cotton batting for a more plush-texture, facial details (nose, ears) sculpted out of model magic, and an outer layer of fabric (in this case, skin-tone dancewear fabric). The hair is yellow fleece, with sculpted Model Magic forming the iconic cowlick bit in the front.
The vault-suit is simply cotton fabric (woo, lightweight!) with 101 ironed on in the back. The shoes are just dress shoes bought from a local thrift store (woo, 5 dollar shoes!).
I hope to wear this costume to some cons closer to DC, maybe Anime USA or Katsucon. At the very least, expect some nice pictures from DC in the future!
Estimated Cost of Materials: $30-$40.
Hours Invested: ~40 for the head, 16 for the rest.
