The original plan for doing Mercury was that me and my friends were all going to do a Sailor Moon gender swap (the girl of the group being the Tuxedo Mask). I chose her because she was my favorite character when I saw the show growing up and because blue is my favorite color. What was intended to be a one-time joke cosplay turned out to be a lot of fun, however, so I made my own Mercury and have somewhat frequently cosplayed her ever since. =P
The base for this is a standard white short-sleeve leotard. From there, its sheets of blue fabric cut and pleated into need shapes. Originally, I was trying to make this out of a T-shirt, but that didn't work out so well, so I ended up getting a leotard for the base.
I meant for this to be capable of changing into Super Sailor Mercury, so with that in mind I made everything removable and interchangeable so it can be changed between the two different forms, and in theory also Eternal and any other form of any other scout I so wish.
I made most of the small bits such as the shoulder guards and hip tube, and purchased some of the things I'm not really good for making such as the wig and the boots.
There are many things I hope to improve with this in the near future, hopefully before next use. I definitely want to make new shoulder armor and use a gradually thinning style as it goes down under the arm. I made it the same all the way around initially since that's what it kind of looks like in pictures, but in real life it looks better for it to shrink and its far more comfortable and usable, too.
I'm also on the second wig for this, and while it beats the heck out of the first, I still don't like it. There just isn't enough on it to do any reasonable styling with, and I want to make sure I get a nice thick wig this time so that I can actually style it to look something more than generic.
