Week before ColossalCon I find out that I'm going to be going. As a little side project, I've been collecting things that characters wear in case I ever end up cosplaying them and for "general usage". When I was visiting Rex Dart and Harl in Chicago, I picked up a black combat hat that fit perfectly.
And that's how Scout-In-A-Week began.
My buddy spork did this first, and because they had so much fun doing it, I couldn't resist trying it myself. I owe spork a lot for holding my hand through this--pretty much everything was the combined powers of my friends to pull this together.
The headset was a $20 splurge from Home Depot that came with two removable earpieces (meaning I can do a filthy RED if I ever decide I have to) and consists of the headset, a piece of tubing with armature wire inside, a bottle cap, and 6MM craft foam for the head cushion and mic. It's all painted and hot glued together.
The shirt was a cheap one from Big Lots which soaks up flash horribly and appears really bright. The shirt's going to eventually be replaced.
Pants are a pair of modified Goodwill pants--specific brand is Haggar. They're SEVERAL sizes too big but they're just belted at the waist (you can see the ruffle in the band in some pics where my belt doesn't cover it up). With help from Saeru and Elemental I added elastic to the cuffs and chopped off a good five or six inches to get the "fit".
Scout's bag is a tube sewed to a cylinder capped with two circles, made of remnants from JoAnns. I have a zipper on the inside (against my back) to store stuff in and blue foam/Ozark Camp Pad to help it keep its shape in the bag itself and the strap. I definitely recommend foaming it and making it functional. Again Sae and Elemental helped me here.
The belt is a web belt, available at your local military surplus store for like...2 bucks. Mine's actually a bit more expensive because it was a Wrangler belt or something from Walmart--about ten bucks. But I already had it, so really it was free.
The Sandman (and All Baller's League ball) were made from a foam 6 dollar bat from Toys R Us, cut into using an X-Acto knife for the split and painted using a combination of RIT dye (which was stupid, use something else), Prismacolor paint markers, and FW ink...basically everything I had that was brown in color, I hit it with. I used refs from tf2chan's GMod board to finish it up.
The shoes are made by "Charles Albert" and were purchased at Savers the day I left for the con. Same with the dog tags too.
All in all the costume probably ran me around 50 bucks, if even--and a large chunk of that was the price for the headset. It was finished in around a week and ready to go for the con. Really easy, really straight forward. I had fun.
ETA: Now new and improved with a second version of the Sandman, several different hats, and a better pair of pants. I'm movin' up in the world!
