The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Last Updated: 07-16-2011

I started working on this costume in the autumn of 2007, so it took almost two years. Fortunately it was easy for me to stay motivated. I had thought of three different ways how I could make it: 1, with the helmet and tongue. 2, with the whole face showing. And 3, the helmet without the tongue and half of the face showing. I chose the last option because it turned out to be the most practical one. I tried to go with 2 first, but I realized I could finish the helmet faster than the face mask. I didn't want to make the tongue, because without it I can breathe, drink, eat, and make faces easily. XD From the beginning I wanted this costume to be accurate and awesome-looking, and I think I succeeded. :D It's so much fun to act like Zant, drink coffy and be silly!!

A little bit of how I made the costume:

What I wear on my feet are actually shoe covers. I can put them over any shoes that fit inside. They're made from papier mache, and covered with fabric, with painted details and weathering. I had a lot of trouble with painting them... First I painted with acrylics but the result wasn't even. Then I spray painted them, but later realized that the color was wrong. So then I ended up covering them with fabric that's the right color.

The ankle warmers and hood were made from the same fabric. I think it's too dark, but they're not so bad that I'd change them quite yet...

The pants have three layers and three different types of fabric. It was extremely difficult to find good references for them and to get them right! The pants are the first piece that I finished, and I'm happy for that, because they needed so much thinking and caused so much stress. XD They have lots of creepy things inside to keep the shape.

The shirt was pretty complicated to construct. DX All the designs were painted with fabric paint, but the back consists of fabric pieces in different colors. It took three tries for me to make the red hanging thing good... The first two times I cut the fabric I wasn't happy with the shape and size, and when I finally got it right, I burned it with an iron. But fortunately I didn't screw up with the paintings. They came out nice. XD Making the thingies in the ends of the sleeves took a week, but I spent even more time planning how to make them. It was not easy!

The armor is what I spent the most time working on. It took a few tries to make the base. I covered it with papier mache, and made the details with model magic and clay. It's painted with spray paint and weathered with acrylics. I'm very proud of it. X)

The first part that I started making is the helmet, and it's also the last piece that I finished. It wasn't really difficult, I just had it hanging around the house while making other pieces. XD The base is posterboard and duct tape, which is covered by papier mache. The details are model magic. It was painted with spray paint and weathered. The nostrils are my eyeholes. XD I can see through them, only, but it's not as hard as it sounds. I can raise my head when I need to see higher. The helmet and armor were the first papier mache props I ever made and since then I've loved to make things from it!

I also made the Twilight sword that you can see in the game before the Stallord battle. I'll take photos of it in the con. For carrying my things I made a Malo Mart bag. :D Photos of it later, too.

The costume is soooooooooo hot I'll have to take the helmet off once in a while in the con. DX I'll wear this to Animecon VII in Finland, July 10th-12th 2009. Can't wait for it! I'll have better photos later. :D

This is the in-game version of the character.

Thank you to
- LiptonGirl for the reference pictures! I'd have died from despair without her help. DX
- all the people at the forums (and other places) who helped me.
- members of my group - Sevdnjes who cosplays as imp Midna, and AanZku who's our Link - for helping me put the costume on, and being my slaves, of course. XD For the photos and support, too.
