Soul Eater

I began watching Soul Eater at the very end of 2008 thanks to plenty of suggestions for a new anime. It's been a while since an anime has really caught my attention like Soul Eater did. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to finish the series, but am still working my way through it. Regardless, my friends and I decided that we wanted to make Soul Eater costumes for Otakon this year.
I picked Eruka because I loved her design and her character in general. I also had it in my mind that it would be a fairly easy costume to make since I hadn't sat down and put together a costume in a while.
Insert fist in mouth here.
Thanks to numerous personal and family-related issues, my procrastination began and I didn't get to start my costume until a good month or two prior to Otakon.
I ended up making two different dresses for Eruka. The first dress, while is nice and comfortable, looked nothing like the actual design once it was put together. Insert panic and frustration. Luckily my wonderful mother game to the rescue. The result was another trip to Joann's where we spent a few more hours going through patterns, finding one, getting new material and going back to the proverbial drawing board.
Thankfully dress #2 was a much better success and all was well.
The hat was a nightmare. Thankfully I started using leftover orange material from Margie, but it wasn't working like I had planned it out in my head. Not surprising since nothing ever seems to. Then I got smart and just built a frame using an old hat, cardboard, packing tape and a hot glue gun. After it was completely put together and I knew it wouldn't collapse or fall apart, I covered it once with white spandex and again with yellow spandex.
I was so happy with it, I wanted to cry. I use styrofoam balls for the eyes and craft foam for the eye lids, nose and mouth.
Surprisingly, the shirt, white boots and leggins were the easiest parts of the costume.
