Before AFO 2008 was even over I had picked up a Cardcaptor Sakura artbook from the Dealer's room and found a picture of Sakura in a cute outfit amongst fish. I told myself then and there that I was pretty sure I wanted to do this outfit.
As always I began looking for patterns to use that would work for the outfit. But there was no way I was going to wear this outfit without a skirt. D: To get a nice flowing effect I wanted to use a very light fabric and also something that was sheer. I ended up using very delicate silk, which was a challenge to learn how to work with.
Also in the process of making this outfit I learned how to dye fabric. I did a gradient dye effect on all pieces of the costume that fade from white to red. I also learned how to make pieces without patterns. The sleeves I made from scratch, pretty much no pattern, just a bunch of trials. Then for the tails I made my own pattern to use.
This has got to be the most revealing thing I've ever worn around a lot of people. However it really was a comfortable costume to wear, especially in such warm weather that we have here in Florida. I think I was one of the few people who felt comfortable in their cosplay and wasn't dying to tear it off. :3
The staff I made with the help of my dad. He cut pieces of wood for things like the gold parts and the star and I sanded them down to get the right shape. The gems are resin that I cast and so on and so forth. Without his help I don't know what I would have had for the con as far as my wand goes.
What really surprised me was when I won 2nd place in the Advanced division for the costume contest. I figured anything past Intermediate, there was no way I'd get it, but I did and I'm so grateful to the judges for that. It really made me so happy to receive that award and I'll never forget it.
This is a costume I think I will most definitely wear again. It's got to be the most comfortable one I have even if I'm not used to wearing such little clothing. That and I felt so girly in it! I ended up feeling like the girliest cosplayer at AFO when I wore it.
I really love this costume and it took a lot of work, with many trials and errors. I can't wait to wear it again, I love being a fish! X3 *Blub blub*
