Up for Sale! If you're interested in purchasing this costume please PM me about it ^_^.
Why Her?: Mel is one of my favorite characters from OS (besides Gene--but I'm unsuited to cosplay him ^^;;). Plus, she's terribly underrated! No one seems to like her, but I'll show my love of this character by cosplaying ^_^.
The Story: After watching some Outlaw Star tapes I had, I decided to do this costume. Of course, we won't mention the fact that Mel is incredibly easy to cosplay ^_-. I wanted something simple to do after the fiasco of experimentation that was Aeka, and I picked this.
The only thing I really had to make was her blue poncho-cape thingy. I used a really stiff, heavy cotton blend for the outside ( it was called Girl Scout Uniform Material). I wanted to be really accurate, so I interfaced it with purple cotton. I cut two three-foot-radius half circles out of each fabric. I sewed it all together except for a hole in the middle where my head would go. I sewed light blue ribbon to the edge of the circle. For the light blue shoulder pads, I drafted my own pattern after watching Melfina on rerun for half an hour O_o. They're made out of light cotton, and I sewed black ribbon to the edges. I really like how everything turned out except the border on her shoulder pads. If I was to do it again, I'd sew a smaller blue piece onto a larger black piece, and do away with ribbon folds.
For the three discs that ornament the front of her poncho, I used Sculpey. This was the first time I'd ever used Sculpey, let alone any clay save Playdoh :P. So, the discs aren't perfect, but you can't tell unless you look close up. They're attached to the poncho by pins.
As for the rest of the costume. . .well, I raided the thrift store ^_^. I found the shirt, skirt, shoes, suspenders, and tie there, all together under 20 bucks. Can't beat that ^_-. I had to hem the skirt, but that's better than making one from scratch. The stockings I already had.
Of course, you're saying, "Where's the wig?" Well, I never got around to purchasing one ^^;;. I'm not going to be wearing this costume, so whoever buys it can have their own choice at a wig.
