Kotone / Lyra
Last Updated: 04-18-2010
Kotone/Lyra is pretty much my favorite Pokémon character EVER, hands down. She's just so energetic and such an amazing character. I couldn't resist cosplaying her, it was just something I HAD to do!
Most of the parts were store bought and altered. The shirt is a red long-sleeved, scoop neck shirt from Old Navy. Since it was a scoop neck, it wasn't too hard to pull in in a bit and make the circular shape where the black part of her shirt is. The hood was made and attached pretty easily as well.
The overalls started off as a pair of capris which were then cut and re-hemmed. With the denim that was cut off, the front panel and straps were made. The straps don't actually work like real overalls, and the front panel velcros on top of where the zipper and button for the now-shorts are. The back of the overalls forms a V to the shorts, as shown in the anime.
The socks aren't really changed much, I merely sharpied the brown portion into black. The hat is similar, as the only thing added was the ribbon and bow with some quick sewing by hand. The shoes are a simple pair of red converse.
The wig, however, was not as simple as the costume. *falls over* It started off as a Dorothy wig I picked up from Party Fair (Here's the shocker, it's a kanekalon wig! I'm serious! Cost 35$ as should be expected). After undoing the braids and using the hot water method to straighten it, I put most of it back into ponytails with a little bit left to be cut for the bangs. The bangs were pretty simple actually. I wet them a bit, wrapped them around a circular brush and then use a hair drying to blow dry it. The ponytails, on the other hand, were not. The first iteration of this costume (worn to Mokucon 2009) I merely did a similar thing to the pony tails however I used paper towel rolls and hair clips rather than the circular brush. It gave the ponytails a more curly-hair look, which worked in general however I still wasn't happy. So, a few months later I decided to break out the can of hair spray. I molded and fought against the wig and probably nearly emptied the can of hair spray. However, now the ponytails stay up unassisted and also have the unified-curl sort of look Kotone/Lyra has.
The accessories are pretty much all store bought. My Togepi is an old Pokémon 'plushie' that when switched on will talk when I press it's hand (which is why I put plushie in quotes, she's not exactly soft xD). The Piplup plushie is from Disney World's Epcot (Japan store, of course). All of the badges I earned back when I was 10 or so and was playing in a TCG League during the Johto season. My "pokégear" is my real cellphone, and my bag is a Shakugan no Shana bag I bought at AnimeNext 2009. The pokéballs on my waist are, as should be expected, the Pokéwalkers that come with HeartGold and SoulSilver (one is Japanese, one is English :D If you see me at a con, feel free to ask to sync up pokéwalkers!).
