Making this costume was one heck of a job. Mostly because this wasn't the only Kagamine costume I made for Mega. >>;
For Megacon 2010 my friend Alex and I cosplayed as Rin and Len Kagamine from Vocaloid 02. And I took on the job of making both of the costumes, you know...they looked SO simple in the picture but BOY was I wrong.
So many small details were included and I had to sit down for a while and try to figure out how I was going to most aspects of the costumes. From the sailor collars to the headsets, everything was a new experience for me. Especially making the pants, but they are one of the things about the costumes that I'm most proud of. They turned out pretty well. :3
Two of the things that were most important to me unfortunately didn't work real well during their debut. I really wanted to add electronics to the costumes, because I knew it would really add something extra to the outfits.
So in the headsets I put LED balloon lights to make them light up and in the sleeves I put LED screens with words on them. However...during Mega the headset lights dimmed a lot throughout the day and the electronic screens all stopped working or the messages kept getting erased.
So we ended up just turning off the sleeves eventually. That was quite disappointing because they were the most important aspect of the costumes and many people liked them, but next time I'll just have to improve upon the sleeves and how the screens are set in them.
The main materials used were all cotton bases, such as the fabrics that were twill or a cotton/polyester mix. The belts were canvas belts, I cut one of them in half and that's what we used for the hanging side belts.
The wig definitely needs to be styled correctly, that was my fault for not doing it when I had time. And there are a few very very tiny details missing that will be added.
In the end these costumes had a good amount of work to them, and there are a number of things I will need to fix up before their next wear. However I do like them and I'm happy with how they turned out. It was fun being a boy and I think I pulled it off better this time around. <3
