After roughly five years of cosplaying, I finally have a costume from an anime! XD
My friend Tamlin and I chose to do the Brotherhood variation of the State Military uniforms, since that is our favorite incarnation of the series, followed very closely by the manga. During the hunt for good reference pictures, we noticed a few subtle differences in the three series. In Brotherhood there is no triangle above the part at the back of the butt cape, and the cord running from the shoulder loop to the ring on the right side of the uniform is a straight thin cord rather than a braid like in the manga and 2003 series. The conflicting references gave me quite the headache at first. DX
The pants pattern was Butterick 5221, with no modifications.
I had no pattern base for the butt cape. I got out my yard stick, a pen, some muslin, and went from there. This part was much more complicated than I thought it would be. Everyone I had seen previously managed to get away with a basic trapezoid shape for the pattern. I eventually found I had to angle the back seam in and add darts to get it to fit around my waist and hang right.
The jacket was based off of McCall's 4745. It's not really a pattern I would recommend for women doing this outfit. The shoulders, sleeves and sides needed to be taken in and fitted better. It was far too baggy otherwise. No part of the pattern was left unmodified by the time I was done with it. It took quite a few tries to get the fit right. The collar pins came from eBay.
The wig is a Clover L in 25, I took a few inches off the bottom and trimmed the bangs a bit. To style it I bring it with me unstyled to the convention, put it in a ponytail, clip it up and spray it until it looks how I want it to with Got2B Glued Freezing Spray. I wash it out and redo it each time since I've found it just doesn't stay "fresh" looking if I try and prestyle it.
