Maiko (Apprentice Geisha)
Memoirs of a Geisha
Last Updated: 03-29-2010
I've been wanting to do a maiko ensemble for a while, and with the weather as gorgeous as it has been lately, and my photographer being as wonderful as she is, we decided to meet up at the botanical gardens for a photoshoot.
I wish I could say that the kimono is an actual maiko susohiki, but it isn't. Instead, it's a wedding furisode that had enough length to simulate a susohiki. ^^ The reason for the unpatterned patch of obi is because I was trying to make a fukuro obi into a darari knot, which required some of the unpatterned part to show, but I'm still quite happy with how it all turned out.
I styled the katsura from a lace front wig I bought on eBay, and made all the kanzashi with "silk essence" fabric from Joann's. Looking at the pictures, I realize I was wearing it rather far back on my forehead, but I've seen quite a few real geisha wearing their wigs strangely high, too, so I'm not too worried about it. ^^;
All of the photos are by the lovely and talented Ashley Johnson. <3
