Oh wow, where to start. This was one of those projects where it looks so simple on the paper but then once you start making it, it has SO much tedious detailwork and tiny things that you didn't take into consideration in the first place. Sanaki has been one of those characters with an awesome design that I loved when Path of Radiance first came out. Then, when I saw her Radiant Dawn design I just HAD to cosplay her!
The patterning for the cloaks/cape/whatever you want to call it monstrosity was all done completely from scratch since I couldn't find a pre-existing pattern that was close enough to what I wanted. Everything was drafted and re-drafted (and in some cases, re-re-drafted) from muslin and then done in a red amaretto linen. Since we're on the subject of patterns, everything from the pants, shoes, and undershirt to the crazy sleeves was drafted from scratch.
The detailing on the layers of cloaks is done in appliqued cotton and every single bit of detailing is satin stitched on the tightest setting around the edges. The tiny little detail things on the upper part of the cloak were originally going to be applique as well, but they were so small that I just hand painted them and then satin stitched them as well.
The tassels and matching braids were made from OVER 9000 yards of DMC embroidery floss. I bought out every local craft store of that color then ordered two boxes of embroidery floss balls online to make the braids. SO MUCH FLOSS. I think I spent more time making tassels than I spent making the shoes!
The pants are pretty simple what I like to call Aladdin pants with elastic in the ankles to give it that gathered look that Sanaki has with a waistband and zipper in the back.
For the shoes, I started with some cheap $2 flip flops from Wal-Mart. I cut off the rubber thong, then built up the shape of the slipper part with wonderflex. Once it was done, I used E6000 to attach the toe part to the flip flop base and covered it in suede. I patterned the rest of the straps and doo-dads with suede and foamies and painted some cloak clasps for the little shoe clasp things that she has.
I really love this outfit but I think I'm only going to wear her strictly for photoshoots in the future. She's SUCH high maintenance with the long wig and all of the layers (that shift at my slightest bit of movement or the tiniest bit of wind...) But all in all I'm so happy that I finally get to cross one of my dream cosplays off of my list *_*
