This is my second Samus suit. I had been working on a SSBB Sheik but wanted to participate in the Anime Human Chess Match (my college hosts Tora-con, so I could easily join it). The one problem was that there already was a Sheik in the match and that I would have to make a new cosplay to be in it. I decided upon the Fusion Suit because it would not have armored legs= more maneuverability and because it had not been done as often as other suits. With only a month and a half to craft the cosplay on weekends (I had to go home to work on it from college) I was forced to work on a tight schedule up until the last minute. It was well worth it, though, and participating in the chess match realized a small dream of mine because now I was a piece and not just part of the audiance. I had a scripted fight with Afro Samurai of all characters- now that was interesting. Because I could not fall down in the armor I spray-painted a yoga ball to look like a morph ball. I ran offstage while Afro was stunned to "transform" and the ball was rolled across the stage :D then it was punted off so that Afro could win the fight. Everyone thought that was hilarious!
This year many of the Chess Match participants were Nintendo characters, So I have a couple pictures with a Mario, Luigi, Ganondorf an "newcomers" like Snake and Shadow. More people were questioning my gender and some realized I was the "Samus from last year".
The armor was made in the same manner as the Dark Suit (I actually re-used the armcannon because of time constraints- but the Prime cannon was part of the Fusion Suit as an extra in Metroid Prime so I had that as validation). The yellow bodysuit and glove were bought and the lines/paint applied onto them. The blue overlays and shoulders were the most difficult pieces. I did not want visible seams around the holes so I devised a way to use fusible lining to turn under the edges onto the underside. The leggings hooked up into the back and velcro squares were placed along the legs to prevent them from twisting and slipping. This was also used for the arms.
This has been one of the most difficult cosplays I have made because of the cloth/armor combination, the lack of patterns, and the holes in those leggings. Overall I am quite satisfied with the cosplay and it is by far the most colorful of my creations. There are a few things I want to tweak, but for only a month's worth of time it came out well. I will definitely wear this in the future and post more pictures when I can!
Videoes of Tora-con's 2010 Chess Match are already on Youtube! The few up so far cuts out most of it, including my fight :( Expect an "official" series of videos from the Chess Match organizers soon!
