This costume was a gift to my friend who wore it. When I found out she loved Steampunk, I decided to go ahead and design her a costume. When I showed her my finished work, she loved it. I made it as her 18th birthday present.
I started by making the corset. Simple enough. I have made a lot of corsets, so this was easy. It is fully boned with spiral steel and has awesome antiqued brass grommets down the back. Then, for the weird bustle thingy, I just made the overlaying part and put some netting inside for slight volume and then made the two tails. Each tail is doubled, so all seams are to the inside. The shirt is a simple, high collared shirt with longer cuffs and is made of unbleached muslin. She absolutely LOVED the color of the shirt.
The jacket and shorts were made from quite possibly the softest leather I have ever touched. And if I can ever find more, I'm buying the bolt. It was a remnant, so I bet I never will. And I usually don't like brown, but it works with this. The jacket was cropped super short on her and then I only added one sleeve. I love the little reverse epaulet on the sleeve. I wish I could have found an antiqued brass ring for it to match the chains and the buttons, but oh well. The shorts were really easy to make too, seeing as how I've done them before.
I also made her belt and pouch as well as the weird leg thingy she has on.
As for her goggles, a friend made those for her and she found the boots online. I told her she's lucky her feet are smaller or I would so have stolen those boots.
I updated this costume late last year for her after she saw the bustle I made for my costume and she said she was having "bustle envy". It's the same fabric, but it is lined in black, attached to a leather belt with a nice antiqued brass buckle. Then I just grabbed random parts of the bustle, gathered them and hand stitched them into place. She's been sporting this bustle ever since.
