Lords of the Underworld: The Darkest Night
Last Updated: 08-01-2010
My fiancée asked me to cosplay Maddox so that she could be Ashlyn. To those who don't know, The Darkest Night is the first book in the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter. It's a series of paranormal romances, with a book for each Lord. Next time, she wants us to do Lucien (Death) and Anya (Goddess of Anarcy).
Maddox holds the demon of Violence within him.
The jeans I went and made entirely from scratch, wanting to try making regular jeans for a change instead of leather ones. After finishing the jeans, I put some rips into them as though they were a result from thrashing around trying to get free. That's it for the jeans.
Now, even though in the book Maddox isn't wearing shoes while he's shackled, I felt I should have shoes, so I hunted down a pair that I think Maddox would wear. Perfect fit for the character.
Now the shackles. These were a fun challenge as I'd never made shackles before. They are made from solid wood, and are fully functionable. Considering that my fiancée is actually able to shackle me to the bed. I have a shackle each for my wrists and ankles. I can actually lock the shackles into place, using the locksmith techniques I learned from my uncle (my dad's brother). The chains are also made of wood, and for walking around I made them fairly lightweight. To make the shackles and chains appear to be made of metal, I spray painted them silver, and after three coats, added some paint of different tones and colours to make them seem well-worn and a tiny bit rusted. I did the same to the key, which locks and unlocks all the shackles. My fiancée will be carrying it around on a chain during conventions as she is my Ashlyn.
As this is a cosplay where I have to be shirtless (though for walking into stores and such I will don a shirt that I can pull on/off quickly), I have made a stencil of the butterfly tattoo that Maddox has on his back. It will be airbrushed on by my fiancée using a mix of red and black ink, which will stay on my back for 24 hours. Of course, to remove, my fiancée has to scrub it off... and that won't be until after the 24 hours are up, otherwise, it won't come off before that.
I'm using my real hair for this one.
