Costume SHOWCASED on 10-12-2010
Last Updated: 05-03-2013
OK, this will take up a chunk of your life:
Final days working on this was 102 consecutive days of working on this in some way/somehow. I still did not have enough time to do a tryout before debut.
So ...the LOVE on this... I love this costume to death! (love never a secret ingredient) Hence took 2+ years to make, last 100 days rather intense. Takes 5-6 hours to put on, each time.
So where do I start? Tea and cookie and I'd like to post a link to ref pics. But for now, my photobucket account has some. Components are also there, given they are HORRID shots. Gradually fixing that up.
I do wanna say, you feel like you can do anything after a project like this, with all those components Armor,cling-wear,headgear,wings,somewhat convincing skin, fancy boots, etc it's all there, and I almost got in over my headgear XD but kept wits and know it's not everyone's thing. Rare character she is, but she has everything there.
I don't care for the fanart versions first off, too easy! I mean the time it takes to do one component on the actual character is the time to do the WHOLE fanart version...not even since it's closet cosplay. I plan to hit these now, but first thing first, I don't show what I got by settling for the easy. I'll do that later, complex original version first!
So the specifics :
Finished basically Aug 1st 2010, started making gold trim in late winter/early spring 2008. Total yards was like 50, and not easy since you needed to cut along the manufacture line, there are 30 of these parallel lines per inch. Took about 45 min/yard to finish. Can't multitask with that one, it's 100% attention.
Bang-out job on wings(1 week) thats wings and holder and testing to work right. Wings bounce, held up by NASA grade carbon steel that weighs nothing but never bends and ultra-thin That should do it! I am making less bang out, more accurate ones now.
Hair-1 day dye with trim). cake. Dyed with a ton of purple to obtain closer color. When wearing it,I'll learn to fan that out right so that its fluffy on pics k? UNDER the wings. ^^
No F-ing around on the armor (100 hours per peice = 400 just on those 4 parts). I have a whole extra set of that armor from last yr...=maybe 200hrs on that. That's where the money went...well lots of time to get just right too(obvious)
Attaching them to look gravity defying took awhile.
Custom jobs are just that, custom. No patterns exist, all obviously had to be made, and all are kept. So patterns exist to fall back on NOW. Since I did so many things twice, I have spare parts already.
Thank god no corset, binding, etc, waist is already patheticly small, so a lil tape does the job. Lots of simple/cheap stuff put together right, 10 yrs taught me well, cannot throw money at success sometimes.
Speigel says "Precious Blue Bodysuit" customized to invisibly hold armor up. It's the magic part, and so simple. At the end of the day, I do not clip/clamp/pin a washed costume up to dry, it's own hook method can be slapped onto anything to hang. Conveinient unintentional plus. I did have to shorten the arms, they gathered up at the armor(on muscle area) so it was less anti-grav for awhile XD but still did the job. SINCE FIXED *checked off*
Randoms: Tail was a bugger(tip took awhile, and one version feels scarey real). horns were fun and easy(took awhile), cast clear green gem was a bugger...I have 4 of them now, all SLIGHTLY different colors, all work fine.
My frigggin face just fools ppl OUTSIDE the hobby now...inside hobby people realize it's me ...need to test more combo of weird chemicals >.>
Uh, ok the fancy footwork, 3 parts: boot, ankle cuffs, black "undersock" prob the most fun, but park of it broke on day 2, so... do over! only about 6 hrs worth.
gloves! yes, gloves that stay seperable but which hide under the armlets. 2 pair of gloves I has cause they get dirty, and both different fingernails.
Ears kinda sucked first time wearing out,yet to switch out. I have 2 more pair colored finally. NOW have extra pair of lightweight "fuzzy" foam ones too.
NOW, the swimsuit was pain(duh), trim and trim and trim, all one peice up to the collar. Fitting that with the detail to hold and CONNECT the way it did, well it was the first thing I started and was last part totally completed. Includes boob cups made of high grade resin but covered in same material as swimsuit.
Blue makeup is a mix of different things, application with facial add-ons changes everything on that account(more thinking ^^). Some things dry and crack differently, so a mix of oil and water based make-up had to be invented. It works and I will continue to use it forever.
Cuffs are brass metal and easy to make accurate. yay ez.
Earrings (NOW)are stand in for the much larger cast ones I have(pics later). Wing claws are cast resin too, molds are fun to make, more fun to get double casts from. Each head horn had its own mold. Also have red "fuzzy" coated foam ones of the perfect size.
Easy to see: Many other materials were used, in fact the fabric took up the least time to use, SO the resins, plastics, makeup, etc was much more majority of time over my time with my fabric friend.
ALL of this cosplay is very seperable and if peices need replacing there's no stepping back to go forward. Planning for that = not easy. A few $100,no summer activities, and a whole lotta liquor (red bull came later on).
Trial runs were more painful than pulling teeth, but cost nothing but time...people spend more on good kigurumi masks so I can't complain.
well, ok...this getup really brought out the worst in people. Online, public, photogs, other website owners, etc but the worst was an awful experience with judging at Otakon: OUT IN THE HALL at the main entrance, where judges went straight to asking about penis and tits like anyone on the street. They wanted NO other info. It was insulting and pathetic. Poor unknown Astaroth got no love there, and at least walk-on happened which I almost could not endure crazy pain while stuck backstage, turning down pics from [understanding] fellow masq ppl.I don't get why they treated me like THAT. That experience was totally rotten and the most uncomfortable I've even SEEN let alone been through. I have no plans to start trouble with otakon or the judges, whats done is done unfortunatly. I got all I need without competitions(I hardly compete) but judges need to respect everyone, not some or most. I competed in mid level. I would take SOME respect over none anyday, kinda why I posted for folks to see here, I wasn't going to at first, not after all that. But I DID get what I went for and have said enough on that. Hence the photoshoots and all the uploads. ^^
so.. I felt bad about turning down ppl in the halls so many times trying to get where I needed to go, I never thought it would be so tough to get somewhere in a character no one knows.
Worked very hard for very long time during the toughest of times...it was insane. Against all odds this project got finished. So most would understand if I keep the exact hows/whats/etc to meself but I think something like this belongs up to share in the end. Regardless of said negative instances,I do treasure each lil praise I get for this one, no one gets left out there.
mmbut my real prize in the end? is the checklist from hell moohaha. *pulls a succubus and vanish*
