Violinist of Hameln

Last Updated: 06-22-2015

I'd always loved Violinist of Hamelin/Hameln but NO ONE has ever heard of it, so when I found out Dust Bunny and KitsuneBaby were doing Sizer and Ocarina, I couldn't wait to ask them if I could join them as Raiel. ^.^ That makes Dust Bunny mah wife, which is awesome.

KIDDING. Raiel is one of my favorite characters in the series, especially in the manga when he wields his manly kotatsu, so of course he was the logical choice. Plus, in the anime he looks like a girl and girly men I can do. =P

The whole outfit was pretty simple, white undershirt, fingerless gloves made from white stretch poplin, pants made from stretch poplin, and the coat which I patterned completely from scratch out of muslin and then made the final product in quilter's only green cotton and more white stretch poplin.

The belts are made from white vinyl and snap/velcro together in the front.

One of the few hard parts in this outfit was the shoulder... Collar... Whatever the hell you want to call it, the super Saiyan looking collar thing. I patterned it out using paper first, since it was going to have to be pretty stiff to stand up, then once I had the pattern figured out, I cut it out of Peltex and then heat'n bonded more green fabric to both sides. I used a tight satin stitch for the black lines on them, then sewed green bias tape around the border.

The hat was probably the death of me in this costume... Every costume needs one of those, right? I patterned it out, again with paper, then cut it out of peltex and sewed it together. I used more of the poplin to line the inside of the hat to make it look nice, then I heat'n bonded and satin stitched the outside with the green stripe and R badge.

My first attempt at the hat actually failed and came out lopsided, but luckily I was able to cut the R patch off and reuse it on the final product. xD I put a layer of batting in between the outer layer and the Peltex interfacing layer, then I pinned and staystitched everything I had. I added the viser, which is also made of fabric covered Peltex, this tine black vinyl I had lying around. Once I had that attached, I used white bias tape to go all the way around the edge of the hat, which took about three tries to get it down properly, since my machine kept missing layers and pins were too weak to pierce the manliness of the layers.

I can't wait to wear Raiel again, and next time I hope to have the golden piano too! Dust Bunny and I brainstormed for a while on how to make it, but I just didn't have time for Otakon, so... NEXT TIME.
