Green Outfit

Last Updated: 08-09-2011

I bought 1 yard of light green fabric called "Juliette" for $10 per yard. I created the pattern based off of some old T-Shirt I had. It took me about 5 hours to sew [top and bottom].

I bought one yard of a fabric called "Juliet", the exact colour [as you can tell from my other pics] is a light gray-green colour.

The Top
I created a pattern for myself by taking an old T-Shirt that I don't wear anymore and I took it apart using a seam ripper. Since the T-Shirt was a simple regular one that you can find at a crafts store with no fancy necks [v-necks, scoop necks, etc.], the back and front are identical so I took one piece to use as the pattern for the top, and one of the sleeves to use as a pattern for the sleeves.

I took my yard of fabric and folded it in half "hotdog" so that it was at it's longest/skinniest. When you cut things, make sure you use the entire fabric from end to end!

I placed the pinned the pattern for the top to the fabric and cut, leaving 2 inches extra for sewing and for the rips. The same was done for the sleeves.

*Again, do NOT cut of any fabric to shorten the length. Keep everything as it was! You will need the extra length for the rips.

However, I left the top the same length as it was originally as the T-Shirt.

After I cut out the two sleeves and the back and front of the top, I moved on to the skirt.

To sew the front and back, simply sew along the top [where your shoulders are] and along the sides. On the sides, keep the space where your arms will go through open - don't sew them shut, as well as the hole for your head.

The sleeves; You should have a long rectangular piece for the sleeves - sew along the bottom.

To attach the sleeve to the top, they both need to be turned inside out. Pin the sleeve to the sleeve holes on the top and be very careful when you sew this for sleeves are pretty tricky. If using a machine [as I did], sew VERY slowly! If you are doing this by hand, then sewing the sleeves won't be as much as a difficult task.

Once the sleeves are on, turn your top right side out and put it on. See how the sleeves feel and if they aren't quite right, sew them again. Once everything feels okay, turn the top inside-out again and put it on. You may need some help doing this, so ask a parent or a friend to pin the top along the sides to follow your curves. Carefully take the top off, and sew along the curves. Again, you will need to try on the top a few more times until you have everything just right.

Right now, if you try on the top and skirt, you should look a little bit like Tinkerbell ^_^

The Skirt
With my remaining piece of fabric, I had enough for the skirt. All I had to do was cut away all of the extra fabric from before to have a rectangle [near perfect square shape] piece left. This is all you need for the skirt.

All you have to do for the skirt is sew a straight line along the sides leaving the top and bottom open so that you can put it on. You will have to put the skirt on [inside out] and pin it according to your curves, remove the skirt, and sew along the newly formed lines your pins make. Try it on again and adjust it until it fits you perfectly. If it's too tight or the seems sort of just out when you wear it when it isn't inside-out, use the seam ripper to remove the stitches and re-sew.

The Rips
As for the ribs, find a good picture of Nel, or use mine as a guide, and lightly draw the rips out on the fabric. Try it on your costume and see if the rip-lines look alright when you're wearing it. Also, make sure that the rips on the top don't start too high or your bra/breasts will show.

Once you feel all of the rips look right on the top, sleeves and skirt, and are 100% sure they are okay, cut them out.

For the strip that goes across Nel's belly, I used tape to tape it to me underneath the skirt.

The mask is made from two 8 oz. packs of Crayola Model Magic Clay and Black Craft Foam. I sculpted it using a wig head to keep it's shape. The mask took me about 7 hours to do and about a week to completely dry out.

My wig was purchased at cosplay wig on ebay and I bought the Jade Green curly wig for $52.

I bought my sword from for $20.

Total Cost: $94
