Umi Ryuzzaki

Magic Knight Rayearth

I had a lot of fun cosplaying Umi! She is very close to my personality and my best friend is the perfect Fuu to run around with. We had no problem getting into character and we got many odd stares from people much to our delight. :D Waiting for the elevators leads to many good in character moments. LOL The only thing I regret is I can't find a single pic of my friend and I together. I know I took some! Oh well. At least I found some of me. I'm so horrible at taking pics with my own camera. xD

The wig was the best color I could find at the time and I plan on getting a better, longer one at some point. The headband is craft foam I painted gold and added a gem to. The white antenna thingys are also craft foam. I used popsicle sticks to get them to stand upright. The previous year I ended up taking it for a trial run and discovered all the problems with it. I worked really hard with eye linner to get the signiture look of their eyes without going to overboard. It may look a bit conservative, but we didn't want to look to bad. ;)

The main costume is a blue taffeta tank top with a navy blue collar. I chose taffeta for the costume because I wanted something that looked somewhat elagent without being a bolt of shiny satin. I figured even though they are saving Cephiro, they would probably do it in style. ;) The skirt is the same blue as the top with a navy blue linning. It ends up being a little heavy, but I like it because it takes the shape of her skirt well and flows like armor would. I trimmed the skirt in gold and hope to do the same to the collar. (sadly I ran out of gold trim) The cape is a turquoise chiffon type material (totally forgot what it was) to give a flowy look to the cape. It's sewn to the dress at the shoulders.

The armor is craft foam and was a little bit of a trial and error. I still need to tweek it just a bit. It was a challenge to get it to stay on my shoulders, but the coments I got on the costume made the hassle worth it. (I have a couple of ideas on how to make it curl around my arm and that should keep it on my shoulders) My friend was surprised at how long the shoulder armor is and thought I had made it too long. It's perfectly to scale and I like how it came out. The chest armor is another story all together. I had a hard time getting it to look right. It was too high, then too low and now I'm just not really thrilled with it. I love the cosplay so I will work with it and see if I can make it work. The "gem" on it is a large button I painted blue and sprayed with a gloss to look shiny. I also used gold paint to make the decorations on the chest plate.

The belt was interseting. It was hard to get it porportionaly correct and I still am not completly happy with it. I need to make it go all the way around my waist like a real belt. At the moment it is just safety pinned in place. I had an interesting time messuring and cutting the three different peices of leather to make it. I had to re-make it at least once because it was too tall. I used gold paint to make the little square details on the sides.

The spanks are navy tafetta and the first my mom and I had ever made. A little trial and error there as well. For some reason certain parts of my cosplay love to shrink and grow randomly for me. Go figure.

The gloves were perchased as were the boots. The boot covers were the first we had ever made and acctually turned out well. I needed to make them taller (I swear I meassured right) so I will re-make those as well. If nothing else I need to replace the horrid shoes. They were almost the death of both mine and my friends feet.

Makona I purchased in the dealers room the day before. It was a Tsubasa Chronicles Makona, but I say Rayearth introduced him first. ;)

I had plans to make a sword for myself and my friend, but ran out of time. I am working on them and plan to finish them for the future. This is one cosplay I will not let die so, you can expect to see better pics of it in the future. :D
