Description
The first part I decided to tackle was the cloak. It is a poncho style based on McCall’s pattern 3448. Essentially it’s just a big rectangle of fabric with an opening in the front and a slight hole for the head in the center. From there, I made the sleeveless tunic and pants, as they were almost as easy to do.
I make the tail out of orange 3/4" fur I ordered from http://www.mendels.com/fauxfur.html. The structure is upholstery foam I carved into a general tail shape and slid into the fur "sock". As with my other costumes, the tail is supported with a coat hanger wire armature that disconnects from the tail to make it easy to insert through the opening I left in the seat of the pants. For the strips of material around his waist, I made a basic cumber bun design then wrapped a long strip of material around it several times. It closes in the back with 2 plastic clips.
The gloves are Welder’s gloves I got at Home Depot and dyed brown with leather dye. I ordered a box of 2” wooden balls online, drilled holes through each, and strung them together. I gave them an initial coat of dark brown stain then sprayed them with Minwax Red Mahogany wood finish and a final coat of clear.
I made the hat from scratch. I bent some coat hangers into 2 circles to give the brim and top some support. The band is a strip of suede leather. The boots are my Dad’s old motorcycle boots. First they’re about 2 sizes too large so I made cheap inserts out of 1/4” foamy sheets and layered them until the boots fit nice and snug. For the top, I bought some white vinyl and used maroon vinyl dye to make it the right color. I made flaps that folded over the top of a pair of old motorcycle boots. For the arms, I basically sewed a jacket out of fur.
The mask is based on a latex wolf mask I created a while ago. I sewed an elastic band onto it to hold it on my head. I drew the eyes onto a sheet of Plexiglas and cut them out. I curved them slightly by heating them over a coffee can in the oven and then painted them on the back with the design of the eye. The area of the iris is clear and that is where I see from. It actually works very well unless I accidentally breathe out of my nose rather than my mouth and fog it up.
The inside of the mouth and the nose are coated in black Plastidip. I sculpted a tongue in clay and covered that in Plastidip as well and painted it pink. The 4 canine teeth are sculpted out of Friendly Plastic. I furred the latex, starting at the nose and working up and back. I made a hood out of fur and pinned it into place on the mask and sewed the two parts together. The eye patch is made from scrap leather I had. It has a leather band that actually goes around the mask and is just kept in place by single stiches of black nylon thread at intervals. The ears are Foamy that I glued and hand sewed the fur to and then sewed in place.
