Costume components: Blue wrap dress with red floral design, layered red and blue underskirt, gold obi, black heeled sandals, assorted jewelry.
Total cost: $200
The wrap dress is a simple wrap style held together with eyelets. I used a woven blue fabric and heat embossed the red floral pattern onto it. I tried paint at first, but didn't get as clean a result. The dress pattern itself was largely done by eye. The upper bust section is based off the Newlook 6557 pattern. The lower skirt made simply by measuring below the bust to the knee, then drawing a curve, making sure that the arc kept it about 3 inches below the crotch. The trim was tacked on by hand and a sheer red layered over blue fabric gives it the soft edge.
Red sheer panels are attached to the strap of the dress. The back panel runs shoulder to wrist and the front only shoulder to elbow. I use trim to create bracelets to keep it tacked at elbow and wrist.
The obi is a simple belt shaped to fit my waist line. I initially had it held shut with snaps, but they did not give it the proper look, so I switched to ribbon to get a tighter seal.
For the underskirt, I layered a sheer red over solid blue to give it a more muted tone in photographs. Both are ankle length and slit to the knee.
