I chose Gary Oak as my first cosplay for the simple reason that he is one of my all time favourite characters. That and I have no skills, haha. I basically needed something I could put together. This WAS almost entirely an eBay cosplay!
I got my first wig from southpanda-8. It lasted me for Kitacon '11, Ayacon '11, Midlands Expo '12, Kitacon '12, May Expo '12... it fared me well, I guess, but it's so far from what I ever wanted.
My newer wig is an Arda Jareth in which I commissioned the styling from Darkiekun on CosplayIsland. Sadly, the styling got a bit smushed in transit, but that soon got fixed by some A+ styling help by my Ash!
The original shirt and boots (both versions) from eBay. The accessories and customisations... eBay. Bloody godly place. Both pairs of jeans were mine in the first place, but I switched from the first to the second for accuracy's sake.
The second shirt was commissioned, but I honestly wasn't satisfied with the colour, fit or the orange rim at the bottom. It lasted me for Midlands and Kita, but no more than that.
And the third shirt was yet another commission, once again by Darkiekun, and I'm really happy with it! It's super baggy, as is Gary's, the colour is great, the orange rim is pretty much perfect and it's so insanely comfortable to wear. So I'm satisfied!
I bought a pre-patterned pendant, some acrylic paints and spent a few days getting it just right... had a little nightmare when I thought I'd gotten the pattern wrong! Turns out that Gary's hairstyle and colour is not the only thing the artists couldn't decide on - sometimes his necklace's design is vertical whilst at other points, it's horizontal. So I did the best of both worlds and painted one side with the horizontal pattern and one with the vertical! That seemed to work well enough, haha. A few days after getting it just right and a lot of use of my hairdryer (sped the drying process up so much!), it was done!
I originally customised the boots using black sticky-back felt. This was probably the biggest issue for me, believe it or not. I have extremely shaky hands and so many mistakes were made... I think they turned out okay though. And the boots themselves were so damn comfy until they fell apart! I bought some new ones, a tad more expensive, from eBay and customised them again, this time with brown sticky-back felt and taking much more time to ensure that they looked as neat as possible and as close to accurate as I could get them. I'm actually really happy with them, since the inaccuracies have been niggling for so long!
I also commissioned the cloak from the S2 episode "A Tents Situation and the S3 opening from seraphim_cry, which I hope to get decent photos of at Amecon, since Kitacon '12's photos disappeared along with my camera ; n ;
But yeah, there's been a lot of adjustments to this cosplay since its conception but I'm finally nearing actually being satisfied with it!
