Placidmage and I have wanted to do Houshin Engi costumes for many years now, so (together with Meiye as Chou Koumei) we finally made it happen. Dakki is one of my all-time favorite villains and I loved cosplaying her. This costume variant is the last outfit she wears in the series. I chose red, white and gold for this costume because I think it suits Dakki's character: gold for luxury, white for beauty, and red for blood.
I had a lot of firsts with this costume. I made my first pair of boots from a pair of thrift store loafers, using a tutorial from CosMode magazine, and my first pair of fake lashes (which I am really proud of). This was also my first time drafting a complex pattern (the dress and hat) and I think they came out nicely.
Every part of this costume was made by me. The entire outfit is red and white sateen, minus the gold trim (which is some awful slinky fabric that I will never use again) and Temptation (which is eight layers of gausy "prom dress" fabric). I did the red on the dress and hat without the aid of WonderUnder, since they needed to stretch, so those parts are all hand-sewn. The smaller dots and the yin yang on the dress are fabric paint. The gold tiara thing is a craftfoam-Wonderflex sandwich covered in that hateful gold fabric, then tacked down to the hat using really loose stitches. The wig is an Epic Cosplay/cosplay.com wig, cut and styled by yours truly.
There are still a few kinks to work out with this outfit. Dakki has three yin yang tattoos (one on each shoulder and a large one on her back), which were very uncooperative. We ended up using an oil-based face paint, which smeared really easily and didn't look very good. We had to wash it off before the Masquerade because it kept getting on everything.
This is my new favorite costume, and I had a lot of fun with my Taikoubou and my Chou Koumei. Unfortunately, the sound staff at the Masquerade lost our audio, so we were forced to improvise. We ended up with a Judge's Award, but missed the opportunity to perform our skit, so it's bittersweet.
Our skit (as it should have been) is up on Youtube, thanks to our awesome friend Howdy. You can view it here:
