POA Style Student Robes

Harry Potter Series

Last Updated: 11-12-2007

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and have wanted to cosplay as a Ravenclaw Hogwarts student forever, so when a few friends and I decided to dress up as Hogwarts students for Halloween, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to finally do this costume. I decided to go as Cho rather than as a random student, and set to it. However, as simple as robes seem, this costume was a pain in the butt to make.

For supplies, I went to JoAnn's and bought 4 yards of a black cotton/sythetic blend which I liked the feel of (and which was on sale!) and 4 yards of dark blue velvet-y like fabric to line the entire thing with. I got the patch, wand, and scarf off of eBay and the tie at Alivan's. The skirt, shirt, sweater, tights, and shoes I had.

What made this difficult was 1) sewing without a pattern due to hurrying and 2) I sew by hand, so this was a large and BORING process. Because it is entirely lined, I had to hem each section of cloth twice, and it took hours. And because it all looks the same, it is very uninteresting to make. I'm never making a robe again until I get a sewing machine.

For the robe closures, I twisted some heavy duty wire into loopy shapes and sewed them on to one side. I then attached some thin black rope to the other seam so that it closes across the chest. I sewed blue and white ribbon onto the sweater to get the patterned knit look, and restyled my million-and-one uses black wig to look more like my idea of Cho. I added hair ribbons because I thought they were cute. ^^

All and all it was a lot of fun to wear, but made way too quickly and definately not my best work. I will be touching it up in the future.
