Briar Rose

Sleeping Beauty

This is actually the third time I've made this costume. The first was actually the first costume I ever made, and it never saw the light of day because when I took it out of the suitcase at the convention, I was too ashamed to wear it. It was that bad. Seriously.
The second was thrown together for a monologue I did in acting class; I chose to do her scene when she walks through the woods. However, it was also quite shoddily made and it got trashed (though the people in my acting class liked it).
This was made in 6 hours; I need something the wear to the Renaissance Faire and while several friends were pushing for Rapunzel, I don't want it to get really dirty. So I threw this together instead. Actually, while making it, I came to realize that they are pretty similar... Rapunzel's costume is kind of like an updated, more ornate version of Briar Rose.
I used a pattern for the corset, modified a pattern for the skirt and freehanded the blouse. The blouse and corset are made of linen, and the skirt out of a cotton weave. I figured these would be more accurate to being a peasant as she was as Briar Rose.
Ironically the most difficult part was finding the basket; no stores seemed to have any at all! I ended up having to go downtown to find one and then add a lining that closed at the top since it wasn't deep enough.

I still need to make the shawl, but I haven't found a good fabric yet.
