I was trying to find another outfit to do for 2011 con season and I fell in love with Meiling's character design.
The fabric is a knit of some sort, with a really cool texture to it. It also has a bit of a stretch so it was easy to work with.
The bodice was more or less cobbled together from a couple of different patterns with a lot of modification along the way. The bias tape was the worst part of it - the first time I used the narrow stuff which looked TERRIBLE so rather than pull it all off, I just re-did the whole vest with wider bias tape.
The skirt was pretty much "how long should this be? Okay, now cut.". It seemed to work well enough!
The shirt was bought at a thrift store. I cut off the sleeves and put elastic in the bit that was left to produce the puffy shoulders, and I cut off the bottom of the shirt to have it the right length.
The hat is a circle cut out of the same fabric as the skirt and vest, with elastic threaded through it and glued onto a cardboard circle. The star came from another outfit I won't be wearing again, and a friend did the writing on it as her hand is steadier than mine!
