Story of Galaxy Express 999 - PSX Game

Galaxy Express 999

Last Updated: 09-01-2011

This costume was originally in the works for a Hallway Costume Contest hosted by I gave up my position in the contest because there was a construction issue with my mask, and the costume would have never been finished in time.

However, little over a year later, I decided to pick up all my pieces and finish it for Dragon*Con.

The coat was modified from a discontinued Butterick Colonial pattern, and the pants and shirt were made from a biking shorts and shirt pattern.

The helmet was designed by using an enlarge printout of the character's face and putting it onto a piece of pink insulation foam. A hole was cut out for the viewfinder, and multiple layers of insulation foam were added for depth. The inside of the foam was cut out to make room for my face, and the outside was sanded to give a three-dimensional shape. Craft foam was used to give the inner-circle of the mask it's ridges. The front area was covered with Smooth-On's Shell-Shock, and was sanded down, primed, and spray painted. The details were added with sharpie and acrylic paints.

The visor of the mask is plexiglass which has a decal on the outside. It is removable for cleaning, and held in with screws. The mask itself is held onto my face by attaching the temples from Real3D glasses and a clippable elastic band which goes around my head.

The epaulets were sculpted in Apoxie Sculpt, and attached to craft foam, and are attached to the coat with Velcro.
