Inara Serra

Serenity (movie, Operative's first visit)

This is a difficult one, because it's featured in about two shots. We only see the front from the waist up, and the back is a wide-shot. Thus, there's a little interpretation required. Still, I'm pleased with the outcome.

The dress pattern is a variant of McCalls 5098. (I use this for at least half of my Inara gown.) It's basically a full length bias cut dress. I layered a sheer fabric over a shiny liner. The liner is used for the straps and the sheer for the drape around the arm.

Three pleats are sewn into the sheer over the bust. It took some tacking to keep them from sagging.

To get the drape in the front, I add an extra panel at the front of the dress. The panel is fully attached on the left side seam. It cuts diagonally across the front. The right side extends from bust to hip and has side pleats. (I studied Simplicity 2647 pattern to get the measurements right on that. Try it out with test fabric first. It is non-trivial.) The top of that panel is not attached, so that it drapes properly. (This will also accentuate the hourglass of the underlying bias cut dress.)

I wore gold arm bands.

The wrap is a shear gold with red flowers heat-embossed onto it. That was more a matter of economy than style choice.

Total cost, probably $100. (Since the jewelry, wig, and shoes were borrowed from other costumes, it's difficult to say. The dress alone cost $60-ish.)
