Sailor Moon Sailor Stars

I have loved Sailor Moon since I was just a (nerdy) little kid. I never got to be her for Halloween, and I finally decided "Damn it, I want to make this!"..... So I did.

This costume was much more work than I originally gave it credit for. Everything was patterned entirely from scratch with the exception of the leotard.

For the boots, I bought a pair of white heeled boots and cut the tops into the V shape. I re-finished the zipper by hand and then made two leather toppers, which I painted pink to match my fabric. The moons are made from Fimo, which I baked, sanded, polished, and painted.

The skirts were patterned out twice since the length on the layers didn't come out right the first time. I used Casa satin from JoAnn for the blue and pink and some yellow dull satin from SYFabrics for the yellow part since the Casa collection didn't include a yellow of the right shade. Each skirt is a full circle and just cut slightly shorter than the one underneath it. For the "belt" I took a foamie and wrapped the white fabric around it, then I made bias tape from my satins and stitched them onto the edges. The belt is lined in felt and snaps in the back and includes the little "butt ribbons". The skirt was sewn directly to the belt and zips up the back with an invisible zipper.

The leotard was fashioned from a figure skating pattern. It was simple enough, all I did was pattern the poofy sleeves and add the tubey trim to them, both pieces made also of Casa satin. The leotard is a cotton spandex.

The collar was altered from a previous sailor collar pattern I had made and the yellow stripes were satin stitched on because I couldn't find any yellow ribbon that matched my yellow satin. I actually like the way it came out in the end, I love the extra bit of texture it adds. The collar merely pins onto the leotard.

The broach heart is cast from resin using a soap mold. I cut little craft feathers for the tiny wings and made the pearls out of Model Magic. The broach has two pins so that it can balance and pins onto the collar.

The gloves are white opera gloves that I added the piping to. I made the little feather pearl things removable with a pin back so I could wash the gloves if need be, and also to make them easier to pack/travel. The bracelets are made of Casa satin which is stitched to the gloves so they don't move weird.

The choker is made from Casa satin and the heart and moon are both made from Fimo.

The wings are angel wings with a wire frame that slips into the back of a corset that I wear underneath the whole costume. I used turkey rounds which I cut to shape and trimmed to look nice.

The wig is made from an Arda Chibi wig. I took their long ponytail clip and butchered it to make the long ponytails and gave them a slight curl at the tips. The buns are the Arda clip-on plain buns, which I sprayed very generously with freeze spray so they wouldn't come unwrapped.

The odango shields are made from two sets of cover buttons and the feather clips were made the same as the ones on the gloves. The forehead moon, as well as any other moons I forgot to mention, are all made from Fimo, baked, sanded, polished, and painted.

I'm SO happy with how she came out, I don't know when I'll get to wear her again, but it was an amazing feeling to have so many people at the con compliment my costume! I'm so used to doing rare/obscure characters that no one recognizes that I'd never been so overwhelmed by compliments! <3
