Marcus

Final Fantasy IX

I made this costume for my boyfriend to wear so that he could take part in our mini Tantalus group for Youmacon. Actually, I think this costume came out better than our Pluto Knight armor costumes orz but I'm really happy with how clean it turned out! Color matching is a big deal to me, and while I had a heck of a time finding fabrics that were even remotely close to what I wanted, in the end I got pretty lucky with what I found.

The tunic was made from scratch. I drafted my own patterns for it. I reinforced the collar with a medium interfacing to help hold it up. The "cravat" piece is just lace I attached.

The pants were also made from scratch. I used an old pair of pants to base my pattern off of. I made the thighs kind of wide to match Marcus's stocky appearance. I sewed on the crotch patch and then hand stitched on some bias tape I made in order to create that over-exaggerated stitched look around the patch.

The arm pieces are upholstery leather that is lightly stuffed to make it look a bit thicker, but not so thick that it looked too weird. Marcus has thick Popeye-like forearms, so I tried to mimic the look as much as I could without it looking stupid.

The boots were rainboots I cut off at the calf and glued on some faux fur to. I should have trimmed it up a bit, as it's a bit long. I'll try to remember to do this in the future!

What else...ah, all of the belt buckles are actually just picture frames. I've found that I just cannot make smooth buckles out of Sculpey, and I needed the buckles to be light anyway, so picture frames it was!

Everything else is pretty straight-forward. I am seriously annoyed that I COMPLETELY forgot to add the blue stripes down the arms, auugh! I will definitely do this for his next wear. :(
