The Secret World of Arrietty

Last Updated: 04-11-2012

Arrietty from "The secret World of Arrietty" the Miyazaki movie version of The Borrowers.

I made this in time for Anime Boston - I mostly just wanted to make all the cute props, especially the hair clip! I made everything myself. The boot covers are made from recycled turtleneck shirts, and are removable (as those are my medic boots under there!) The bag is a pair of old linen pants (with some green cotton and fleece interfacing). It works just like the real bag in the movie and I can put things in it.

The clip was the most challenging prop, and is made from cardboard and hot melt glue, then a Dreamcast cord for the fake spring coil! It really works cause there are strong magnets in the bottom of the clip so I can "clip" and "un-clip" it from the wig. It's only about 3 ounces so it's not too heavy either. I'm happy with how it came out, I looked at a lot of ref from the movie.

The dress I drafted and made the day before the con so I think I could do better on it but it has the right shape and is sturdy/fits so I think I'm okay with it.

The pin is from laying around the house parts (Styrofoam ball and a stick I sharpened to a dull point) and the cube is just a Styrofoam cube I mod-podged to be stronger. Talk about easiest props ever.

The wig was the most expensive part of this costume, as it is a lace front wig (was $40). Wearing it is a PAIN, it's held on with 2 sewn in snap clips and wig glue (which is serious business guys, for the love of god buy the remover for it if you are using it).

All in all fun costume to be!
